Viking dramas often deviate from historical and archaeological facts and finds, but does it really matter? Hear what a Norwegian has to say about it!

I think for me, the thing that bothers me most, is that alot of people end up thinking that many things they have seen in the shows/movies actually are historically accurate and people end up with wrong information, years and years. However, are the series/movies to blame for that? No, they arent. They are creating entertainment for us, but everyone personally should check their facts on their own! TLDR sowey! Also, loved the subject and youre looking handsome! ❤

I too enjoy reading up on any drama I watch which purported to be based on real events; especially when the production includes a disclaimer that certain people, events and places have been changed or added for dramatic effect. 😃👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah, I think it's cool to have some creative freedom and it creates interest around the Viking Age. But I do encourage people to like you Tony, read about the Viking age if you have a genuine interest for it!

What is particularly encouraging when I compare books I bought in the 1980's to those bought recently, is the wealth of additional discoveries unearthed in just a few decades resulting in a greater understanding of the Viking Age.

How about an episode on Wolin, Poland and the Vikings? Just a thought!
@NorseReign2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, I'd love to go there and make a video, or more. Thanks for the suggestion!

Last Kingdom series 5 is the last one. However they are making a feature film to wrap it all up.

You are right to quote the saga's as being a mix of truth and fiction. Is it wrong to have modern day series that are basically just modern day sagas? An interesting thought. I have sometimes wondered what the aim in writing was. Was it to teach a moral that is perhaps different to what we expect? Would Snorri be horrified at modern attempts to understand them I wonder? Thanks for the video anyway and I realise that like most thing it probably raises more questions than answers

What makes a saga a good saga? What are the principles involved in saga writing? Do we need to get into a medieval mindset? Were the Icelandic sagas the only sagas? Interesting ideas... well to me they are anyway Haha
@NorseReign2 жыл бұрын
@@bonecarving Sagas were mainly written in Iceland, but also some in Norway. Also, they were written by Christians a couple of hundred years after the events took place, so it's important to take this into account when reading them. I might do a video about the saga litterature actually. Explaining the different kind of sagas. Quite a lot to be said about it!

@@NorseReign Yes I was aware that they were Christian Era and 200 years later… A talk on the history of the sagas would be interesting

The unknown is where my creative mind has fun, I think that's common among creative storytellers. So we fill in the blanks. But unless its obvious disregard or appropriation I don't see the problem. Then again, I am not of that culture. I hope you enjoyed The Northman!

I don't see that people get angry at the show but the people that watch the show and take it to be truth
