Its pretty insane how this little interaction with Charles and Rollo led to such massive consequences. I mean, France essentially created its own worst enemy for the next 800 years in Norman England. The hundred years war stated because the English king owned lands in France, Normandy. Because of Rollo.

The funny thing about all those king's nicknames is that almost none of them are meant in the way we read them today. Charles the Bald was likely named such in reference to the fact that for a long time, he had no land to rule. Charles the Fat got his nickname only hundrets of years later, likely due to his reputation as a weak king. And Charles the Simple had his nickname (originally more along the lines of "Charles the straightforward") corrupted.

Depending on the context, it could mean kissing a special foot for the occation, kissing the monarch's foot, or kissing an entire unit of royal infantry/footsoldiers (oftentimes simply called the Royal "Foot").
@Tyler-sy7jo6 жыл бұрын
It was a sign of respect to the king as to "kiss his foot" requires that you get on your hands and knees and bow your head in front of the king. I'm not sure if they literally kissed the king's foot, but it wouldn't surprise me. This makes the action of Rollo so much better. Not only did he get his servant to do it, the servant pulled the kings foot up to his mouth so he would not have to grovel before him. Then, as I want to picture it, flung the king to the ground by his leg.

To add to that, The guy you refered to here as Rolo the walker is refered to as Gange Rolv in the book written by Snorre from Iceland, that talks about the storys of the kings of norway from when Odinism was the religion til it was a unified christian country. And yes that guy that is sayed to originate the British kings, as also mentioned there, was born in Norway. Gange Rolv liked raiding so much that he dissobeyed the new rules that sayed that it was not allowed to raid inside of Norway, so he was exspelled from the norweagan kingdom at that time.

....I feel that the Lies episode needs to address whether you can really draw a line between Rollo and the current Queen Elizabeth. Edward the IV kind of breaks that line.
@Crazymerc226 жыл бұрын
You can't necessarilly draw a direct line of lords of Normandy and then Monarchs of England from Rollo to William to the current queen, but due to things like intermarriages between nobles a direct bloodline connection can be made, but that is mostly due to the fact that most nobles in England have at least some blood connection of William the Conqueror.

Why Edward IV? According to wiki, his great-great-grandfather was Edward III, and his daughter married Richard VII and gave birth to Henry VIII.

I scolled throught the comments and did not find it yet, but at 6:45 Rollo ages at an incredible rate. *His beard changes from yellow to grey.*

Really hated how they portrayed Rollo in the Vikings tv show. They portrayed him as a petulant traitorous little brother of Ragnar. So many people now believe that's real history. Rollo never even knew Ragnar. He certainly wasn't his brother. Rollo was a very intelligent fierce Viking warrior in his own right. He founded the Norman Dynasty for God's sake. The Normans only changed the entire history of Europe. The tv show really diminished him. Shame on em. 😞

Somehow that epithet 'the Walker' sounds way more menacing than the ones like 'the Great', 'the Conqueror' and all that jazz.
