Thank you so much for the video. My grandparents were born and still live on Inis Meain. It's amazing historically and is quite the culture shock going there from my apartment in Philadelphia to the middle of nowhere. It's beautiful though being able to connect with my family's history.

Fabulous video, that photo of Roscam Abbey was one I took as part of the wiki loves monuments campaign back in 2015. So glad people have been using it.

I miss the islands. I plan to return home soon, and with it I also plan to look into the mound you mentioned in this video as well as another mound believed to be the resting site of Maeve. My last trip to the fort was a windy day, but I still sat on the cliff side despite my friends all saying I was crazy. That was in 2009 and I've been in the states since. Gods I miss it so much...

Dun Aengus may have been a oppidum used by Veneti Gauls as the islands were on the trading routes from Northern Europe to Africa. The oppidum were built on the edge of cliffs, to allow escape if overwhelmed by greater force. The Aran Islands when the sea was lower were hills along the coast, and could be accessed by land.

We visited there when I was ten years old, I was climbing giant boulders on the beach, they were slippery from sea weed, I slipped and had a huge lump on my head 😊

It is likely Dun Aengus was built atop a hill before the cliff was there at all. The seaward side of the island was slowly eroded over thousands of years eating halfway through the ringfort.

What if they hid their leader's boat on that mount? What if the rest of the circle structure is still waiting to be found at the bottom of the ocean? Too many what ifs lol

You mentioned an unexcavated burial mound. Is it the mound for unbaptized children? It has been thirty years since I visited the island but I lived there for one year in the early 1990s. There's a mound by the shore that was used for the burial of children who died at birth or shortly after. The mound is unmarked. It is believed that the mound may be ancient and was adopted by the islanders in later history. The Christian islanders would have viewed the unbaptized as belonging with the ancient pagan ancestors in a pre-Christian "fairy mound".

That's very interesting. It's certainly a possibility. I didn't manage to find any information about the mound so this is actually really helpful! The coordinates of the mound in the video is 53°07'56.1"N 9°40'50.8"W.
@lamontcranston3177

@@NorseReign I just checked these coordinates on a map. The location corresponds with that of the mound I mentioned. What I remember from my reading is that the mound might be megalithic; not Viking. Also, if I am not mistaken, it may be an unopened tumulus. If so it would be thousands of years old and predate most of the man made structures on the islands. (There are megalithic structures on all three islands but they are of minor significance compared to the Celtic and monastic ruins. What they show is that the islands were inhabited thousands of years before the Celts.) I was not made aware of any Viking lore associated with the Arans. That said, you already know the Vikings were raiders who targeted monasteries. The Arans had several. If you're on a raiding expedition and your hitting Irish islands you might as well hit them all!

So.... Im I the only one who sees the quarry? The only who sees the giant over-cut on one of the long sides of the "wormhole". It stands to reason there was fort nearby.
