The judges roles are not to actually make the right guesses. That would ruin the mystery. It's to keep US guessing. It's part of the game. Imagine how bland it would be to have them all announce the singers to us immediately when they recognise them. Tbh, I think the show would be better without the judges guessing at all... but it's just a part of all the entertainment and red herrings.

For an example: When Lenny Henry performed one year, there's no way in hell Jonathan Ross didn't know who it was. He'd worked with him for years and his voice was so obvious. He didn't once guess him. For good reason. To illustrate how boring it would be if they did, when Sharon and Kelly Osbourne appeared as guest judges one week they instantly knew who one of the contestants was when they sung and it was just like watching OTHER people call out recognising their friends... and it ruined the game. I don't know if they're *told* to make the wrong guesses but it totally ruins the fun when someone really does know the voice they're hearing and tells us. If they aren't *sure* then we won't be either. ;)
