The Viking Sky Cruise Ship (SOS) mayday emergency. The 47,800 DWT cruise ship on its 12th day trip from Bergen, Norway to last port of call Tilbury in the London-area. A voyage under stormy weather
With 1,373 passengers and crew on board
Due to a storm on Friday, March 22nd the ship started listing dangerously and took in water. With gusts up to 43 mph and waves over 8 meters high. The ship’s four engines began shutting down
The Norwegian Maritime Authority reported that while the oil levels were low, it was within the set limits. In rocky seas, the movement in the tanks triggered an alarm.
On Saturday morning the ship drifter without power the crew threw out anchors to keep it in place, fearing that it could smash the treacherous offshore rocks.
The Ship issues mayday and begins evacuating. Airlifting 464 passengers by helicopters.
On Sunday the limped ship was towed by two tugs and the remaining 436 passengers and crew of 458 disembarked to the Norwegian port of Molde.
The NMA is undergoing investigation on the ship's operation, a technical study of engine failure and review of the rescue operation.
Regardless of the incident, cruising is one of the safest ways to travel
According to the trade group Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). 0 fatalities generated by the incident.
¿Who’s to blame for this incident? ¿human error? ¿commercial priorities over adverse conditions?

But repair the windows got expensive after the first time & that waiters face was never put back on straight or was his jaw crooked in beginning or was it those 2 300lb planters that smashed him? They sent him home with $300 for his wife and she was so happy for the bonus! The couple that fell overboard and was lost with no family didn’t even sue us. In the airplane industry and with most others regulations are written with blood. Anything heavy should be secured if it was a fixed layout and not changed the layout like dining room tables and large planters

I was on a transatlantic cruise a few years back and we got caught in a really bad storm. I remember the ship captain came on very calmly and said the ship was designed to withstand anything. He then began playing very cheery classical music. It reminded me of the Titanic. All of the cruise ship staff were smiling and joking to make passengers feel calm. You could tell it was all a show. We were in that storm for little over two hours. Afterwards the captain called happy hour .

The ship I travelled on had chairs with little guy wires from under the seat. They could be attached to metal loops on the floor if needed. When we reached the English Channel, the stewards secured everyone’s seat. The tables were bolted to the floor and had rims which kept the plates from sliding off. This was in 1958.

These high profile ocean cruise ships should never go into the open ocean. They need to cruise close to shores & islands. Only a true Trans Atlantic Ocean Liner like the Cunard QM-2 , Elizabeth and Vicitoria are designed for cross Atlantic crossings. They are not cruise ships but rather known as "Ocean Liners" with a much deeper draft.

@Gregory Smith I'm not sure where that myth comes from. While yes, the steel used for titanic is of relatively poor quality by today's standard it was just about the best you could get at the time. It wasn't until ww2 and after that the quality of steel for ships was significantly improved.

Am I getting this right, the engine oil level was on the low mark, the rocking of the ship caused the oil pick-up tube to draw air instead of oil causing a loss of oil pressure hence shutting down the engines. So they scrimpt on a couple hundred gallons of engine oil thereby risking the whole ship when it rocks....wow!

not many years ago the ships were made to sail even in rough seas, they had at most 3, 4 floors, now these floating brothels are 20 floors high and their keel under the sea level is not proportionate to its height in fact it is of few meters below the level of the floating line, this is why these horrendous resort-type ships even with not very rough seas roll and tilt dangerously and anti-roll stabilizers are not enough

A cruise ship will be able to come back from a very substantial roll. However, the angle does not tell the whole story. Modern regulations for stability dictate that a ship must be able to withstand a certain capsizing moment (torque), and that a restoring moment must be present over a wide range of heel angles. The product of the righting moment and the range of angles that moment is present gives essentially what is the amount of energy required to bring a ship to its capsizing point. Old ships like the Queen Mary had a good range of positive stability, angle wise, but her righting moment would be considered insufficient by today's regulations. If, for example, you were able to take the Queen Mary and a new cruise ship and place them side by side, heel both of them over 30 degrees or so, and then release them, the newer ship will quickly right its self, while the Queen Mary will take its time returning to an even keel. Some people might think that the slower motions of the old Queen Mary are more comfortable, but modern stability regulations will not allow a ship to sail with that little righting arm. The QE2, stability wise, is more like the modern cruise ship than the old Queen Mary. Otherwise, she wold not have been allowed to sail without making modifications for stability.

How could this happen ? - simple; the heavy rolling & pitching did loose up sludge in the fuel day tank. That sludge then did clog the engine fuel filters cutting off the fuel supply to the engines resulting in a blackout. How could it be avoided ? regular clean the fuel day tanks so there is no sludge deposit that can loosen up during tank movements ( in storms ) Why was this maintenance not done ? because of economizing on maintenance procedures or negligence / laziness of the engine room staff ( or all of the above )

Why is there so much loose furniture and even floral displays sliding about, I seen it in so many cruise line videos. Soft drink machines not bolted to the walls, if a passenger is stuck against a wall these sliding objects will break bones even worse crush people. I've sailed smaller craft and cupboards are bolted shut and held in place with timber and ropes etc. appliance's are bolted in place. If we can do why not paying passenger cruise companies, the more I see the happier I feel I've never wanted to partake in a cruise.

What are you saying? Of course it's unbelievably UN-likely! There are tens of thousands of successful cruises a year, all over the world. This ONE had an incident. BTW : 43 mph or 43 knots is definitely strong winds but certainly not the highest winds a boat may encounter on the North Atlantic in winter… This was not "the perfect storm" and these boast are supposed to weather much stronger winds… Obviously there was a glitch somewhere.

So basically the problem here was that the engines had stopped working and the ship was adrift with bad weather conditions, is that correct or am I wrong??
@Nik-jy6sl
@Nik-jy6sl 4 жыл бұрын
Ismail Akhtar I ask because they never explain very accurately what caused this type of incidents, or at least I don’t seem to fully understand!! In this video, for instance, they say that the engines halted but it doesn’t explain wether it was because of a technical failure or because it’s just a protocol to follow when facing really strong winds. Then they mention low oil and power levels... it is not clear how everything is related
@xpost9381
@xpost9381 4 жыл бұрын
Well it was written something about that in the video. I can add that this was a new ship (2016) with - of course - 4 new high tech/computer controlled engines from MAN - placed in two separate engine rooms. Such things are senisitive stuff. The engine needs oil for lubrication. The movement of the ship in the seas made the oil to splash around in the tanks. The oil level where within the set minimum level from the manufacturer, but that was nothing the weather gods had heard about.... So I guess instead of oil the engines sucked in air. The result was that the computers automaticly shut down the engines - and in this case all of them. So really it was nobodys fault. Maybe the engine manufacturer had only tested their engines on flat water...??? Lesson learned: Fill up the tanks way over the minimum level. The weather itself was normal bad weather on Norway's weather beaten coast - nothing special to worry about for a ship of that size. Norway coastline is extremely complicated - it's uniqe. There are 200 000 islands and millions of underwater rocks on either side of the ship lane that zigzak inbetween these. Any ship that get engine failure in these waters will be in risk of being schredded. Therefor Norway have standby resources for assistance like no other country. So in this case was all crisis resources mobilized - both on land at sea and in the air. Well the story ended well, shall we call it a narrow escape .... they were around 100 meters from the rocks....

The official weather station on Ona Island, some 33 km s/w of the incident showed gusts of 39 m/s and average wind speed up to 26 m/s this particular saturday. I think this translates to 87 and 59 mph. I guess it would be similar to the conditions Viking Sky encountered. Significant wave heights of 43,6 feet was measured 300 km further North. This could reflect higher waves, perhaps reaching 55 and possibly 60 feet at that location.

A ship that size has fin stabilizers which should have helped resist the largest waves. However, having worked with the stabilizers personally, sometimes the waves make them stick beyond their travel limits. That means you have to constantly reset them. I have had to sit right beside them during times like this.
