I have heard it time and time again to have chainmail you had to be rich. I don't doubt that it was an expensive item to procure. It's expensive to make even now. Though I wonder were "lower" warriors allowed to take off of fallen warriors they defeated? I mean after a battle people going and scavenging the fallen for loot. I have always been curious about that.

Once a poor person scavenged off a rich person's expensive mail armor, he was now the possessor of a valuable commodity and therefore ...rich.
@randalglyph6025 жыл бұрын
@StrangerQuark Yeah mail was uncommon for non-wealthy people, but peasants with bows could ambush knights or well armed viking raiders. The holes in the mail from a longbow or even short bow at close range could be fixed easily. You probably couldn't just choose to find somebody with mail in an ambushable place, it would have to be dumb luck. And then you would be rich, or at least in possession of something you could re-sell for a pretty penny.

You don't needed to be rich for Armor and swords. Vikings raided villages. If they killed some other warriors (slavs or saxons for example) they simply took their gear with them
@mattmattmatt1313137 жыл бұрын
You don't need to be rich to steal armor from a rich guy that can afford armor, but chances are, if he is a rich guy, he's not the kind of guy that is easy to steal from. Also, if he's a rich guy, he's a rare guy. Maybe it took them 30 villages to find one guy wearing a full set of armor, maybe more who knows. That is one armor for your entire raiding party.
@sirapple24066 жыл бұрын
@@mattmattmatt131313 Yes, but, it would be more than likely that there were people that though not complete they would have had at least pieces of armor so after a few raids you could maybe have an almost coplete set that would give ample protection and then after or before those raids started just get some of the armor that you can afford.
@maxkuhlmann35656 жыл бұрын
@@sirapple2406 you forget the point wich the rich guy you want to steal from actually WEARS his armour and bring it to use. the other thing is, that you dont run into war without money, armour ad weapons. most of all warriors are not poor. they will be payed for fighting for their lords. war is not cheap. and so are longboats and raids a mercenary thing...

Or..... they made the gear themselves, or buy it. The catch is you still needed money even raiding. Do you have any idea how hard it is to fight someone with good gear back then? It was no cake walk. You don't just walk up kill someone to grab his gear. It is like someone today with a hunter's rifle taking on another with military stuff. You have a high risk of losing if you don't have the proper stuff, plan, or know what you are doing. You don't simply rely on steal for everything you need. Real life doesn't work this way.

But on the contrary Viking age Scandinavians had power armour though, such as the brynja (chainmail hauberk in Old Norse), which was expensive to make and buy; padded linen and/or woolen gambesons; Gjermundbu spectacle helmets; nasal helmets; Gnezdovo Rus’ helmets; spangenhelms; and Birka lamellar armor, men and women (as shieldmaidens) in battle alike.
