"They're like the Dothraki", the ccean is their downfall" ... what?! The ocean is their main advantage; its how they go on raids & in battles they are strong at sea! They are like the Iron Islanders; everyone sees them as outcasts and heathens & they raid.
@mickyv33088 жыл бұрын
I meant just in terms of going west or long sea voyages. Initially anyways, I know they became excellent navigators.
@mlberg23278 жыл бұрын
They hadn´t crossed the sea to England when the show is starting. Floki invented new boats and Ragnar found a new way to navigate in open sea. Before that they probably sailed along coast lines.
@blahblahooooooooblah8 жыл бұрын
Micky v I see the similarities between the iron islanders & the Dothraki (pillage, slave, fierceness) ... but which is closest to the characters in this show? The iron islanders no question XD. They are closest to the Iron Islanders when you think about the history as well; the Viking Age was the claim to fame for the Scandinavian culture in the 10th-11th centuries; it was the period of time they were most powerful & dangerous. The old Hoare kings from the iron islands also had their time in the light, before the dragons came (& burned Harrenhal), when their kingdom stretched from the iron islands across the riverlands.
@blahblahooooooooblah8 жыл бұрын
Educated Monkey I'm basing my opinion on the similarities between the specialty of sailing that characterizes the Vikings and the iron islanders. Mickey knows what happens in the show & how the Vikings hone their skills of sailing and traveling by boat. So I'm not speaking in the context of the beginning of the show, or what they haven't done yet, but instead I'm referring to what we know will happen. The fact you've shared sheds light on an even larger resemblance between the Vikings & the the iron islanders, in my opinion, as well. For the most part, until Euron Greyjoy, the iron islanders also only raided the coastlines of the North and along the Neck. Euron is also like Ragnar Lodbrok in some respects, though he's closer to Victarion.
@blahblahooooooooblah8 жыл бұрын
Educated Monkey They may not have a whole lot of experiences with open water sailing at the beginning of the show, which I'm not narrowing my comparison on, but its not for lack of trying! The Dothraki actively avoid open water, believing it to be the end of the world, the Vikings honed their skills in sea throughout the show in the active effort to discover new places to raid. That's a feature that's more iron islander than Dothraki.
Historically, this raid happened and begin the scourge of the Middle Dark Ages. Civilization was recovering. Charlemagne had united much of Europe. Then the Vikings reign of terror began.

Didn't know that, that's awesome! Love this show. Violent AND educational.

Fact is that vikings did not have paper, so Floki seeing and later burning paper was a first one as well. Also the British are Anglo-Saxons, a mix of two german tribes who migrated to the british isles dominated by roman-brits and celts in he 4th century. The anglo-saxons being related to the nordic viking tribes (jutes, geats, danes, norse and swedes). That is why english is a "germanic language" as well as the scandinavian ones (though by today there are a lot of other influences that has changed it since), which explains why Athelstan has been able to learn their norse.

Damn its been a couple of years since I've seen this episode! I started watching it because of the band Wardruna(whose songs are in all scenes) that somehow got me connected to the gods haha! Thanks to them I watched from the very beginning, in those days I refused to watch GoT (now I'm waiting for season 7 by reading the books xD). Some people tend to compare both series but the only thing in common to me is the sword fighting and that both are great!
@godsaveme8 жыл бұрын
Interesting to think about is that lots of monks actually travelled around in the north trying to convert pagans into christianity so its not strange that aethelstan knows old norse. Also Anglo saxons and norse are both decendents to germanic tribes which also makes their language a bit similar if im not wrong. The norse knew about the west, but the common farmer maybe didnt sit on that knowledge since most historical facts passed down from story telling and didnt get written down in the norse countries since they didnt have anything similar too paper as seen when floki is excited about finding the monks paper scripts. The reason why I say for sure that vikings knew about the west is because here in Sweden we have an archaeological place called Uppåkra which was a big trade city dating pre viking age which has numerous finds from the roman empire, one for example is a part of a roman helmet, which might be evidence that scandinavians during the bronze age served in the roman empire, which stretched all the way to england. So that scandinavians wouldnt have known about england is kind of wrong but still they didnt raid there until around year 700+. Keep up the good show, love from Sweden.

4:37 +/- real vikings are more like the northmen always riding and respecting their jarls and kings. dothrakki are more like mongols, by the way they kill and burn everything, their connection with the horses and in general the look. it's a mix of mongols and north africans

I know its months late, but I figured I'd answer the question at about 23:00 about how anybody like Athelstan would speak the viking language. The Vikings were called "Northmen", and they lived in north Germany as well, in the region known as Saxony. The Saxon Northmen probably would have spoke a very similar dialect and worshipped in similar ways. The Viking Age when people like Ragnar started raiding in Europe began just a few decades after Charlemagne conquered Saxony, which meant people in the Christian world would have interacted with Saxon Northmen who spoke a dialect like that of the Northmen in Scandinavia where Vikings takes place. So, it can be explained historically, unlike other events in the show.

+Micky v you're the man! Thank you for pushing the rest of normies to watch this show. About history background of the show. Many characters did existed, in history sources or in sagas of the northmans. But they did change couple of things, and they mixed characters and stories from couple of sources/sagas into one. But this is not historically accurate show, even when it's about well documented characters and events, timeline is pretty of, some characters lives and remains on power much longer than in history records, because of the story of the show. Majority of characters are based on historical persons, and basically every major battle or raids, some of them are pretty accurate. I could tell you a lot more, and through examples, but that will lead to spoilers, so I won't. Even if the show bunch of times deviate from history/sagas a lot, major plots are still historical. This show is partially so cool because it make people to read and research history of that time, but my advice is to be careful or even avoid that because of spoilers. And for Suraj, he mentioned that crow remind him on GOT. Ravens were pretty big deal in Nordic religion. Odin had two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, and they flew each day through out the world, and then comes back to bring information to Odin. And that's why are ravens often in the show For Hannah, she mentioned 13th warrior, big new viking, Erik, he is the main viking from the movie 13th warrior, and the voice of Ulfric Stromcloack from Skyrim. movies.dosthana.com/sites/default/files/image-gallery/Vladimir%20Kulich2.jpg img5.bdbphotos.com/images/orig/p/b/pbrozmg5pejarbzj.jpg?djet1p5k
