I absolutely love this series. The only thing I don't like are the armour and helmets of some the Wessex Saxons. Some of the helmets look like 16th century cavalry helmets and some of the armour looks like weird Dungeons & Dragons scalemail. The only things they had then were chainmail hauberks and conical helmets with a nose guard. Also, too many of the Saxons in the series had armour - you only had it if you were super rich, important or an elite soldier (a huscarl or a thane). Apart from some of the Wessex Saxon armour - fantastic series.

So while completing my first degree (History), I took a class that focused on Viking culture from Denmark and present day Iceland. They were actually not particularly skilled fighters based on the burial pits found in Scotland and northern England and regularly got massacred by the better armed and armored Saxon armies. What they did have was the element of surprise; they'd pull up in their low draft ships, raid a village or two and bolt before Saxon cavalry could show up. While the Viking warriors were undoubtedly brave, they simply didn't fare well against better trained and armored English troops.

That's one aspect of this TV series that I find somewhat, bemusing, yet, in the great tradition of lower budget action pieces - which the Brits were great at with series such as the 'Sharpe' series set during the peninsular Napoleonic wars et al - the ability to convey the 'vibe' of the situ - without actually having anything near the correct numbers of extras for the armies or - now this is my point - the right size clinker built, dragon ships! Yes - the Scandinavian ability at boat building - was the super weapon of the time - the Norse, Danes, Swedes - had faster and more maneuverable ships with the low draft and relatively light weight being perfect for Pirate (Viking) raiding up rivers. in reality - the Danes, Norse and Swedes were intrepid opportunists, who, for all their 'Die with a sword/axe in my hand to make it to Valhalla'! theology - once they figured out the money to be made by trading - they became traders and set up alliances. It was the empires of the times that dragged everyone back into almost total war fare. But the character of Ragnar Lothbrok in this series embodies - the smart , undoubtedly brave and believing in the gods and all that- but still - a yearning for his people to lead peaceful lives as farmers. The Goths - another Germanic/Celtic Culture were actually prized as fighters by the leaders of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire

5:10 Bjorn goes from having 2 swords, to a sword and shield, back to two swords. :P
@willhyde5026 Жыл бұрын
Bjorn is a boss who apparently switches his secondary weapon/shield on the fly. I imagine Bjorn swapped his second sword for a shield while the camera is on Ragnar. I think we do see Bjorn drop the shield when he turns to counter the second saxon who attacks him, and it would make sense he would pick up a second weapon from the ground since he's running to his father to save him, not trying to defend himself

Their shield wall looks pretty whack compared to "The Last Kingdom" Last Kingdom makes it look all dope

Your comparing a history channel my guy. Micheal has wrong history and this story is real but they made it diffrent time which I hate Hirt for. But the shield wall looks realistic

King Ecbert won this using tactics he read from Roman scrolls. Even after their empire has been gone for years and years, their buildings in ruins, their tactics were still devastating. Roman army taking people to school from beyond the grave. They really were that good
@alanaltimont90075 ай бұрын
The Last Kingdom was generally more historically accurate than Vikings, as fun as that series was. The Anglo-Saxons generally fought on foot, horses don't go barrelling through shield walls (ask the Normans at Hastings), and the Anglo-Saxons also didn't generally wear 16th-century helmets like some of these dudes do. Time travelers?

This is how wars should be fought instead of guns I get it's a different age now but that's what you call true honour and bravery with the sword or axe
@BlueSkyCountry7 ай бұрын
Historical inaccuracies aside like the Saxon troops wearing 17th century musketeer helmets, this battle was a lot like the scene from My Way when the Japanese after just having fought off a wave of Soviet BT7 tanks in the Mongolian desert, looks up and sees another line of BT7s and T26s roaring toward them. They knew that they were finished when that happened.

The crazy thing about Calvary is there really is no effective counter to it before the invention of pre-modern firearms. The only real way to stop a charge is spook the horses or prevent it entirely. Even opposing Calvary would be smashed by the sheer momentum of the charge.

In real life cav horses VERY VERY rarely would go near a Viking shield wall. They'd stop like they would when coming to any barrier. They'd not do what shown here at all. Though it's still super badass of a scene.
@PROFE979 ай бұрын
That's not true at all 😂😂 cavalry always breaks infantry that's the whole point of a charge unless you have pikes and tactical experience fighting calvary infantry will always lose

If there were Viking women who fought, they were very few.
@normandodson76515 ай бұрын
Intelligent people keep the women OFF the battlefield unless, they are barren. The more pregnant women you have, the greater your numbers are in future wars . Women are too valuable to risk on a battlefield. Our cash rich environment enables a multiplicity of stupid ideas which will inevitably disappear as soon as the money runs out. And, it will.

Great show but I have to why are the Viking’s so much better at fighting than the Saxons. This is just not true the Viking’s suffered many heavy defeats they were not superior warriors.

errr what's with people every time they see the romans they say there shitter there everyone else. They see a spartan they say their shitter then everyone else. They see a German they say there shitter then everyone else. Same thing with the Vikings now. Gets a bit stupid. You think people realize combat skill plays a role when fighting in a battle. Like training plays a role in getting better. idk why people think otherwise.

Well the show ain’t historically accurate so I wouldn’t take it for face value. The Last Kingdom shows Saxons as great warriors and fights are more even there.
