Cool. I use the Mobil1 75w-90 synthetic. I do transfer case and rear diff service every 30k miles. My 2006 Toyota Matrix 4WD has 220,00 miles and runs perfect.

Thanks for the tip about the chisel and punch method. I suppose it works. I think I would have tried some penetrating oil first. Actually, since the front diff plugs are likely to be little tighter than the rear, start with the front. If the front doesn't want to move, penetrate oil them, then give it a few minutes soak in, while working on the back diff. If the penetrating oil doesn't work, then fall back on the chisel and punch. But that's just me. You do you.

What a wicked video! Never done any of this work in my life let alone I do not think its ever been done on my 06 4runner sport V8. ( 2 Previous owners) and I am at 243000km now. Need to do all of this and transmission service. Had a good laugh at the end of your transmission service video as I said that was good but didn't drop the pan and show all what I wanted to see that TOYOTA does not do at the dealership after just paying $244 CAD for them to do a drain and fill. Service manager said 7 or 8 L would have come out but every video I have watched shows roughly 3 quarts or 4L coming out only. They only charged for 4L on the sheet because he said its bulk and we are not going to charge for the continued amount.. ( still confused by that) One of the mechanics there is its about 4 L and someone in the parts department said ya it should be around 4 L so why would the service manager at Toyota tell me 7 or 8L came out? Very confusing. Like I said I have never done any of this before but I have watched about 10 videos on it now and including yours not one showed 7 or 8 coming out on a drain and fill lol Torque converter and the transmission cooler I believe is where the rest of the fluid stays in the system and why you have to repeat the drain and fill 3 to 5 times over a period of time to get to a happy purity back to red in color. Toyota only recommended this transmission service for my 2006 4th gen 4.7 L V8 at 96,000km but with 2 previous owners no idea if it was done or not. Toyota also does not say you need to drop pan / clean it / clean magnets / replace gasket just the drain and fill. If the system holds 12.2 L empty ( I asked) and only 4L came out the majority is dirty as heck still and not performing how it should. You did mention at the end of your one video after you thought about it unless you are towing (I am not) then you do not think you need to drop pan and do all that. That is good to know being that you are a Toyota mechanic. After watching all these videos I want to change everything to help with the lifespan of the vehicle. I would imagine all the torque specs are different on a 2006 4th gen 4.7 L V8 for transfer case, rear diff, front diff etc and dropping the pan all those bolts and drain and fill plug. Maybe I can buy a mechanics book from Toyota on the vehicle so I can have all those exact specs while performing. Very nice videos you made going over everything absolutely after to see coming from someone with zero mechanical experience in doing any of this. Super awesome content angles and tips and tricks displayed! Thank you for making these! That was a long rant hope it all made sense lol been so frustrated over this issue trying to get a clear cut answer from Toyota. One last thing when you dropped the pan in your one video and replaced gasket on fill plug and drain plug I swear one was rubber but then when you showed the picture of the gaskets they looked like normal washers. On my transmission drain and fill just performed at Toyota they do have marked down 2 gaskets which I would imagine is them. you said if the one is in good condition do not have to replace. Maybe it is different on your brand new looking for runner than my old one. Guess I will find out. Thanks again great job!!!

I changed my rear fluid at 32Kmiles, and it was pretty grey honestly(and the magnet had quite a bit on it) I bought the 5th gen with 6Kmiles And i am a gentle driver. I have a toyota with manual trans which i also chg every 30K I have not done the transfer or front diff yet. Still trying to sew what most folks go with for their xfer case fluid

I’ve fixed hundreds of snapped skid plate bolts. Very common issue. You have to drill and tap it as best you can.

9:17 ... this is likely THE MOST challenging area to do on your shoulder/neck/back with the wheel off for ease of access. 2o11 Tacoma similar setUp.. ? the rusty crusty is an issue or not? with those drain and fill plugs being so TIGHT? i busted up my left arm bad for months breaking those plugs free on gen2 Tacoma , top first and bottom was no clearance for long breaker like you used here. clean out the dirt and crud with a pick and penetrant before hammering the hex key into it, it might help a bit to prevent a stripper on that plug

@@VikingsGarage and yes! i did have to remove the driver wheel on that Gen2 Tacoma to even find where the fill plug in the front diff was located behind CV axle and above the LCA WHY did they not put that fill plug where it is on the Gen1 Tacoma, right up in the front area and not the side

I may have missed it but I know the differentials take the gl-5 75w-85. But the sheet you showed doesn’t show the transfer case. I have the Toyota spec sheet and it has a different fluid for the transfer case. LF sae 75w….. (which I believe is a GL-4??? Also guy at dealership said the LF was important. What is the equivalent for this? I’ve not been able to find a straight answer on this. Thanks!!! Some say redline LV-MT?? But unsure. Appreciate the response!

They do sell specific transfer case fluid. I’ve been using for 13 years, regular 75w-85 gear oil with absolutely zero issues.

I’m not going to hate over fluid variety. I spent the coin. Nobody twisted my arm. I’m new to doing this… should I use filter paper pouring it into another container I can measure. Specs say 1.1 qt. Do I need to tap into the 2nd can for the .1? I paid $85/qt…… idk if or any benefit over the Mobil 1 or redline 75w…… next time I will ask more questions sooner….

People are saying you need a specific fluid for the transfer case or you can damage or wear out the parts. Redline GL-4 ,Royal Purple, or Toyota fluid because of the special additives. I used the Valvoline in a bag you recommended, should I change it to one of these?

I need to change the fluid in the rear diff of my '05 SR5 V6. I have lower back issues, so getting underneath my truck without jacking it up a bit is very difficult. I see you are recommending that the truck remain level for this service and I understand the reason. But since I know the quantity required for fill, do you still suggest that I not jack the truck up a bit using my hydraulic jack? I should first try to open the fill plug first, correct? I am going to use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. Thank you!

Always do open the fill plug first, for the obvious reasons. If jacking it up helps, by all means. As long as you get it done.👍🏻

Anti-seize Is always a good procedure where possible. I personally never seen the need to apply it there. Specially on that from diff. Drain one 😉

I think the flat side of the crush washer should sit against the bolt head rather than against the differential housing. But I've seen differing opinions about this. What do you think?

FYI: torque is measured in pound-feet, not foot-pounds. The metric version is newton-meters or Nm.

Do I need to remove the front skid plate for the center lift point? Or, is it reinforced? TIA.

@@VikingsGarage I want to change my front diff oil in my driveway. The crossbar is behind the skid plate. The schematics indicate it’s a lift point so I can then put the jack stands at the frame. My question is, is the factory skid plate reinforced at the cross bar for lifting with a hydraulic Jack?

I wouldn’t try it, never lifted a 4Runner from there.

It's sad that so few people know about lanolin grease. Woolwax is the best. Just spray 8 cans of Woolwax lanolin grease on bottom of trucks/cars once or twice a year and the rust will be so minimal.

Yes Sir, this is Rust belt for you. I live in New Jersey, around here in the winters they cover the roads with this silent killer. Mind you I wash the under carriage twice a week during the winter months to prevent this.
