I think it had already been decided that Victor would win gold.

I believe it was all worked out beforehand for Petrenko, too. Paul Wylie had a flawless and amazing SP. He should have been first or second after the SP, but the judges gave him 5.2-5.4...for a PERFECT SP. It's because they held him back in 3rd going into the LP that he ended up with silver because Paul won the LP. Petrenko's LP is easily the MOST unworthy men's Olympic gold program ever. I'm so glad the 6.0 system is gone!

@@rolandgreen7484 You're crazy. Paul was flawless in the SP, and nobody's presentation came close to matching Paul's artistry--nobody. Even in 3rd in the SP, he easily should have won the LP. His was the performance of the night. Petrenko shouldn't have made the podium for his disastrous LP. His is easily the most unworthy men's Olympic figure skating gold ever. I'm sure he's never re-watched the video of his LP to experience the "glory" all over again. His Olympic victory is easily the biggest example of the eastern bloc corruption under the 6.0 system. The second worst example is Oksana Bayul's Olympic "win".

@pneofotis11 жыл бұрын
in my opinion giving the gold the Victor instead of Paul was a complete and utter joke, and the judges should be ashamed of themselves. This performance was far from worth of a gold medal, and Paul really blew Victor out of the water.

Just watched Paul Wylie's lp for the first time and now Viktor Petrenko's. I have to say Paul should have won. In the beginning I thought yeah I can see why Viktor won but as the program progress, there were just way too many faults in Viktor's program for him to win the gold. Very surprised that Paul didn't win.

You should see Paul's SP from Albertville. It was amazing and flawless. He should have been in 1st or 2nd going into the LP, but the judges gave him 5.2-5.4 for a PERFECT SP. They intentionally held him back so Petrenko would win no matter how he skated. Paul won the LP, but having placed 3rd in the SP, he ended up with the silver. I don't miss the 6.0 system or the Eastern Bloc BS one bit. Petrenko's LP is easily the most unworthy Olympic men's gold LP ever.

Did the first two jump combos really make up for the rest of the program? I say no way. Both hands went down on the second triple Axel, he missed the triple flip, and popped a double for the triple loop. Also his spins and choreography were not as good as Paul's. Paul clearly got ripped off.

The 5.9s for artistic impression are RIDICULOUS. I get it that he had more difficulty but his artistic marks got him the win, and that was blatant favoritism.

He was always considered an artistic skater. Even if he isnt your cup of tea at the 91 and 92 Worlds when he skated better he got some 6.0s for artistic impression and nobody complained, so of course even not at his very best he will get some 5.9s.

How did this win gold? Four major jumping errors, I can't believe how biased the judging was
@nightswimmer9912 жыл бұрын
Well, I suppose only the judges could explain their decision. They had to be relieved at the results, in any case. Paul may have been "gifted" his spot in '92, but he made the best of it. You never can tell who will be prepared to take the day - just ask Michelle Kwan. Certainly all those "better" skaters were not ready; even Victor Petrenko held on to his gold by a very slim margin. The surprise element is one reason I love the Olympic games.
@pellebravesskylar12 жыл бұрын
Nancy Kerrigan had a far more difficult program than Bauil. Although Oksana's program was presented a bit more artistic, she had several two foot landings, sloppy spins & a slower overall presentation. Just wonder why the Viktor supporters also seem to support Oksana's win, too. Bcz such rationale is inconsistent.
@captainapaullo10 жыл бұрын
the medal doesn't go to the winner of the LP. it's the standings after the SP that set petrenko up to win. even though wylie had the skate of his life, he turned out of his jumps in combination and two footed a couple landings.
@L1623VP4 жыл бұрын
That's nothing compared to Petrenko's more serious errors in his LP, falling out of four jumps with hands down on the ice and downgrading his loop to a double. Paul was sensational and flawless in the SP, but he was held back with marks between 5.2-5.4 so Petrenko would win no matter how he skated. 5.2-5.4 for a PERFECT SP? Paul should have been 1st or 2nd going into the LP, but because the judges held him back in 3rd, he won the LP and ended up with the silver. It was all "worked out". I don't miss the 6.0 system or the Eastern Bloc BS one bit. Petrenko's LP here is easily the most unworthy Olympic men's gold LP of all time.

@raichmaneuvers Politicked? Many judges behind the scenes had been urging Paul to retire. He was on their sh*t list. This is documented. So to say that he was placed on the Olympic team as a gift is just wrong. I 'm sorry but I just cannot see how Viktor won this. His whole presentation (the outfit, choreography, moves in the field were slovenly). He ran out of gas at about 2:20. We can agree to disagree but there is no need to give a thumbs down to every poster that you take issue with

Usually I like to join in the debate about who should have won because it's fun to exchange ideas as long as people don't go fanatic. However, Albertville's mens free skate was definitely the worst since figures were scrapped. I thought the 2 ladies could have given most of the men a run for their money :)

Yes the crying Paul should have won is purely emotional. Petrenko skated at about 45% of his best and Paul 95% of his, but Victor was still better.
@L1623VP4 жыл бұрын
Paul had FEWER mistakes than Petrenko, and they weren't as serious either. Paul had a FLAWLESS SP that the judges gave him 5.2-5.4 for. Outrageous. He was intentionally held back in the SP so Petrenko could win no matter how he skated. Paul should have been first or second going into the LP, but ended up third because of the intentionally low marks from the judges. He won the LP, but having placed 3rd in the SP, he ended up with silver. It was all worked out. God, I don't miss the 6.0 system and the Eastern bloc BS one bit. ***** Stojko did 8 amazing triples. Wylie only did 5 triples, and that is if we count his shaky 2nd triple axel and first triple lutz both which he sort of steps out of. Of course Wylie was more artistic but I would have Stojko beating him by atleast .3 on technical merit so beating him anyway. Barna did a great quad so clearly was better technically than Wylie even though both had errors and his artistry is just as strong as Wylie's. In the original program he got a 6.0 for artistic impression in fact, and deservedly so.
@debsong1011 жыл бұрын
Jumping is usually his strength. He's not a good artistic skater. When he's not jumping, most of his program is filled setting up for his jumps. Wylie's program was beautiful to watch. He was the best "artistic" skater that night "and" completed ALL of his planned jumps. Petrenko popped 2 triples (2:10, 4:23), doubled another (2:20) & fell on a triple axel (4:48). Even after skating to the same program for 3 YRS, he "still" made much bigger mistakes than Wylie. Petrenko's the one who got lucky.
@serenakicksass12 жыл бұрын
All you Wylie crybabies are pathetic. Paul was a nice skater who was ectastic as heck with his silver as he should have been. Had the skating been the level of the 1991 Worlds he would have placed only 6th with the same performances. He was lucky to hit his peak, by far his best performances of his amateur career, at the same event everyone important skated their worst. Whoever had such luck ever. Also if judging was fair he would have lost to Mitchell at Nationals and not been here.
@salome758014 жыл бұрын
I respect that you have a lot of FS knowledge.I'm enjoying our discussion very much.Excluding the 3ax/3toe and lutz combo can u honestly say Viktor's program matched up with Paul's?It really looked like he just threw it together like a stirfry.None of his moves in the field had meaning as Dick Button would say "There was just nothing interesting about this program."If it's all about the jumps why even have music? Just have skaters go out and jump for 4 mins? That's what they r doing now anyway.
@serenakicksass12 жыл бұрын
Yes Stojko would have placed way higher under the new system.
@serenakicksass12 жыл бұрын
@pellebravesskylar No the rational is consistent. Both Viktor and Oksana won since the did other things better (Baiul more performance quality, more soul and beauty, higher solo jumps; Petrenko some more difficult content completed like the triple axel-triple toe, bigger jumps, more speed and power) that compensated for their mistakes and rightly won. If Kerrigan and Wylie were Russians instead of Americans people would probably say Chen and Barna deserved the silvers instead.

Petrenko was clearly the better skater of his major competitors - except for this particular night. Nerves perhaps? Elvis probably had the best technical program of the night, Wylie the most artistic. Very odd result in that he won. Still, he had some nice choreography that was kind of distracted by hid costume that almost appeared to become apart. I do find it interesting that very few Viktor supporters condemn the selection of Oksana Bauil a few years later. Nancy zke

I can appreciate Victor's attention to detail and his carriage across the ice. The skaters today just cannot compete with this. Having said that, this performance was stale and uninspiring. The program didn't build to any sort of climax. The music is annoying. I still contend Paul was robbed. I don't care about a jump combination. Paul told a story and every move in his program had a purpose. Victor just threw this together.
@galveston14 жыл бұрын
@raichmaneuvers What you are saying weren't "clean triples" was the half step/loop between two jumps. Triple, half loop, then the double toe. Paul had two half loops like that in the program. He landed more than three clean triples. Let us tell the truth. Yes, Paul had a *small* bobble or two, but his jumps (while not as ambitious and technically packed as Petrenko's I grant you) were MUCH CLEANER than Petrenko's. Skating will always be subjective, but tell the truth.
@serenakicksass12 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. Todd won the bronze at the 91 Worlds which was the ONLY reason the U.S had 3 spots for this Olympics. So 1 of those spot was his as he was the one who earned that extra spot. He declared himself healthy to skate. He didnt have the best competition but that is hindsight. Being declared by doctors and himself as fit to skate and having earned the U.S 3 spots he deserved to compete. Mitchell outskated Wylie at Nationals and it is Wylie who should have been home.
@serenakicksass12 жыл бұрын
Stojko probably deserved to win the LP. I dont think overall since 6th place in the short program was right for him.
@nightswimmer9913 жыл бұрын
Viktor should have sued his choreographer (maybe his costume designer as well). He was lucky he had enough tech prowess to sneak that sorry program past a judging panel. Still like him though. I think he really locked up the gold in the short program. Paul was better overall, but Viktor had those triples... Viktor and Todd Eldredge had such similar style on the ice. (And injured Todd should have been kept home in favor of Mark Mitchell who also deserved his chance.)

@balletmeisterin Are you actually implying Paul's short was the best, haha. No way, it was good but Petrenko and Barna were way better in the short. Paul could have easily been placed 4th or 5th in the short behind Urmanov and Stojko who were technically better. The U.S judge who had Wylie 2nd in the short, the only judge who did, was forced to write an explanation as he was under investigation for possible bias by the referee.

THE most unworthy Olympic men's gold LP EVER. Paul Wylie was ROBBED. The only reason Wylie lost the gold was because he got crazy low marks (5.2-5.4) for a FLAWLESS SP. So are u suggesting that Wylie is a liar? Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle. I find it funny that you do not criticize Eldridge who received a medical bye. It was very apparent that during his SP he was still injured. Many people had an issue with this. Yet you continue to personally attack Wylie's accomplishment. How about responding to the many critiques people have made about Viktor's LP? It was a very stale and uninspiring program that h used 3 years in a row!!!!!
