I live across the street from the "Descanso del Toro", the resort shown in Brandon's video. Like all the residents of Vilcabamba I too thought Carnival wouldn't happen. But, thanks to the effort of the authorities and good will all around, we will have it. Carnival started yesterday early evening. Kids eying targets with their squirt guns and foam cans. Cars and busses pouring in from Loja. Lots of dogs on leashes too arrived for some reason. Made for an interesting show at drunks corner. dogs in the intersection snarling at one another, leashes getting tangled, people parking anywhere and everywhere. The metal sections of the big stage being carried to the plaza in the midst of the termoil. This holiday must have had a pagan anticedant, a few days of intentional excess, blowing off steam. It is still that. I have to think it serves a purpose, a release from the constraints of everyday life. Fasching in Germany and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Excess energy is for me in short supply but to see it in the plaza is to see the joy of life expressed. None of the smiles you see here are forced. The commercial aspect that infuses any public celibration up north is missing too. May God bless and protect Ecuador.
