Nice day for a drive through the small towns. Amazing how the communities spring up where ever there is flat land. Happy trails.

I like the camper dealer in Poncha Springs at US285-US50 junction with the signs they post on their fence.

I have been over US 50 several times since 1953. Spend one night resting at Monarch Pass in 1980 on my way to San Angelo, TX. Over 11,000 feet.

Hello. Found your channel via your Wolf Creek Pass video. I'm from Del Norte (like another viewer said the "e" at the end is silent -- Del Nort) originally. Actually 3rd generation although I don't live there now. The pass going into the San Luis Valley is Poncha Pass, the little town where Hwys 50 and 285 intersect is Poncha Springs. Saguache is pronounced Sa-watch. Hwy 285 between Saguache and Monte Vista is called "the gunbarrel" by the locals because it is so straight, hence the Gunbarrel Station at the intersection of 285 and 112. Going into Del Norte you crossed over the Rio Grande, yes the same one that forms the border between the U.S. and Mexico. The headwaters are west of Creede up in the San Juan mountains. The Rio Grande is not very impressive in Del Norte in August. My dad used to say late in the summer you can cross the river without getting your ankles wet. You mention how nice it will be to get back up into the mountains. Del Norte's elevation is 7,884 feet. The relative flatness of the Valley is deceiving. Thanks for the video. It's interesting to see "home" through someone else's eyes.

You are in my favorite part of the state. I have been away from there for a couple of years. Can't wait to get back out there. Cortez is my favorite town.

Russ, this area you’re in is San Louis valley, A LOT of potato farms and agriculture, (I’m and ex trucker)... I’ve hauled tons and tons of potatoes out of Alamosa and Monte Vista.. many many miles on U.S. 285 🍻

Russ.....At 12:54 on the left is a huge, unusual looking cloud. We have a local weatherman who loves airing beautiful photos and will give submitters credit on air. Many other pics are published the station's website and social media. If I were there I'd take a pic and send it in for consideration.

Seguache is actually pronounced sa-watch. Why, I don't know. I just spent the week end in Crestone and the people there told me to check out sa-watch. Could not find sa-watch on the map until some one pointed out where it was at.

I'm not too familiar with 160 west of Trinidad, but east of Trinidad through Kansas into Missouri, it has to be the crookedest highway ever. More right angle turns than any highway I've ever driven.

The whole San Juan Valley is rich in history, first settled by the Spanish! And many of those NFS and BLM roads off 285 can take one to some impressive scenery away from the crowds. Just so you sound like a local, Del Norte is pronounced without the "e." I got corrected so you don't have to.

Russ ? When you go or drive into a small town USA is it supposed to look like you are going 60 or 70 mph with tunnel vision and about 60° of peripheral vision not able to read anything as you drive ? Thanks Guy

Aaaargghhh ! Please learn how to pronounce streets , cities , etc. correctly ! Please ! Del Norte is typically pronounced with a silent E . Or as the cities elders say - " Nor - Tay " . Peace man ! ( I'm just unsubscribing because you don't get out and explore abandoned buildings / tourist traps . )

@@evopwrmods they have a lookout point in the parking lot that you can see the gorge from . And you dont have to pay. Also there's a picnic spot just before the park thats free.
