🇷🇺 Whist travelling the backwaters of Russia I heard about the Mordvoian people who speak a language called Moksha. And so began my journey to a village deep in Europe in search of someone who could teach me a few words.

@@constructivist6 Not much. However there are some words that share the same roots and are still recognizable, but overall they are rather different. The languages have gone through various of changes and had completely different influences. The closest languages to Finnish are Karelian, Ingrian, Estonian and Veps.

Looking at mr Chinese Characters answer back to you, it seems like he completely doesn't get it. Saying this is Slav is about as correct as saying potatoes is a bread.

I don't think there are any traditional Ainu communities anymore. There's barely any speakers of the language even!

It is a Uralic language, but very very distantly related to Finnish.

It is the same language group and moksha or mordvins are not Slavic people

@@andrew2263vl11 They are already mixed with Slavic. Even in the times of Ancient Russia, a union of 5 tribes (only 2 of them Slavic, other Finnish) called upon Varangians to come and rule.

Always impressed with the hospitality and kindness of the common people of the former Soviet Union depicted in these videos. Having grown up during the Cold War and subjected to untold hours of anti-Communist propaganda, to meet them now is strangely humbling.

Memories, I been study in Russia for 7 years, always visit this kind of villages, to buy some (samagon) and hang out with people, they are simple and kind, miss this old sweet days

There are plenty of non-slavic ethnic groups in Russia - most are of Finish or Turk origins, others are ethnic groups of Caucasus mountains.

Hmm, it might be better to use the term "Uralic" that includes Finnic peoples, Volga Finns, Sami, Permians, Ugric and Samoyedic peoples. But yes there are many other ethnic groups in Russia than Slavs. Many of them indigenous.

Russia is a multi-national state with over 186 ethnic groups. About 80% are Russians, the next in quantity are tatars - about 4%

@@Artiboy02 Germans came to Russia from Germany, mostly during Katherina the Great, while Uralic people are native for Russia, they went to Europe (North-West) centures ago.

@@crimeariver7147 Also in certain regions significant amount of Russians actually have some non-Slavic ancestry because of cultural assimilation of the indigenous ethnic groups. Russian Wikipedia has quite in-depth article for anyone who is interested. Even if you don't know Russian, Google Translate does pretty good job with Indo-European languages.
