Village Big Box - Board Game Review

I way prefer the Dennis Lohausen art of the original. But I own the Inn & Port expansions, which are kind of essential (and expensive). I love dry, beige-looking Euros but not everyone does, so I can see how this new version might introduce the game to a new audience.

I was looking for the expansions for ages but couldn't find them at a decent price. This big box allowed me to get everything all at once. I did prefer the original art but the new look is growing on me and I am really glad that I have all the extra stuff in the box.

I honestly don’t know why people are being so mean to this online. The artwork is awesome. I think it might be more them being upset this comes with an otherwise unavailable expansion but if that’s the case some people need to adjust priorities. The new expansion doesn’t make or break this otherwise stunning gaming experience.

Village is the...second or third game i played when i got in the hobby around 8 years ago. I never owned it, but if this big box is priced reasonably i think it's time. Thank you for the review !

I played Village many years ago and liked it fine, but now with this better artwork and all the expansion there is a potential for stronger feelings. 😍Will get this for sure.

Good to see this game getting the love. It's been on my top 10 for 7 years now I believe. I think I prefer the art from the original although I just really love Dennis Lohausen's work (it's kind of like comfort food for me in a board game). With both the inn and especially the port the game is near perfect for me. Good to see more people will be able to experience this especially since it's been out of print in America at least for a while.

Thank you for the review. This is one of those “oldies but goodies” that has been on my wish list, but hard to acquire because it was out of print and thus having high price points on the secondary market. I was able to find this new edition on sale, so I purchased it and look forward to playing it. I think it will be a wonderful “mid-weight” game to play with my friends who aren’t ready for “heavier” games, but do have experience with Wingspan. The photo you showed of your outside set up and play of “Village” was neat to see. That must have been very enjoyable for you. I live in a part of the world with a fair amount of windy days, so calmer, comfortable days are cherished.

Always love your ramblings. As a gamer who stores his games standing up, when I have games that require a tight for so all the components don’t spill out, I put the empty punch board under the storage tray to achieve that. Works pretty well. Stay well and keep rambling!!

Yes, after SmallWorld had that idea in the rulebook, we often put punchboards at the bottom of the box! Love it! Glad you enjoyed the video :D

The life goals came in Port originally I think? I chucked the boxes for that and inn ages ago so I might have it the wrong way round though 😂

I wonder if anyone who "hates" the new art, hates the new player boards too. I just got into Village: Big Box and I would take the revised version over the original. Score track is set to the side, player boards contain everything, no need about bumping your board and losing track.

I like Denny L art. So i prefer the original. It has this warm feeling. My biggest gripe with this new art is, why the hell does everything have a blue outline? It give me the feeling of a scrapbook or something.

Yeah, I expected more from the new art because the cover looks cool but I'm gonna still with my Dennis Lohausen art myself (even if I don't love the cover on the original, I mean it's good and all but the smiling couple is meh).

We got the old version second hand a few months ago and I had heard about this new Version coming out. We Love the game very much but I hate the new Artwork, I mean it is ok, but the old one Looks way better. So I am glad I didnt wait for this...

This game looks so good 😍 I enjoyed Village to an extent, and also some of the expansions, but not enough to get it at the time. But this looks so good I'm almost tempted. Does it need that big box though?? Would it not fit into a regular sized box?

Good question. You could probably fit it into a small one, but I haven't thought too much about it. Most games comes in bigger boxes than they need, and I think they will as long as we have physical stores!

The original game is one of the more beautiful Euros I have. This version is not that.

Yeah, the cover on this one is kind of cool at a distance but I really miss the Dennis Lohausen element

Good review but.... Woah the new art is so UGLY. Looks like a toddler lift the flap book "spot goes shopping". Solid game but its a shame when they reproduce games and ruin the art.... :( Sheriff of nottingham, colosseum, etc
