When this movie originally came out, it was quite terrifying. Being a remake of a Japanese horror, it was the first time most American audiences had seen such a ghost story. I remember it being one of the first horror movies that ever gave me chills/goosebumps in the theater. It was funny hearing Raeen say he got goosebumps from it too. The parodies like Scary Movie and so many sequels and similar movies have really dulled the impact of this film to modern audiences, but I really enjoyed seeing them react with fresh eyes and reminded me of that feeling of seeing it opening night back in 2002.

If this helps: The secret at the end is that Samara (the little girl) was evil the whole time. I don't know if a non-English speaker would notice this, but when the doctor says "you don't want to hurt anyone" and she says "But I do, and I'm sorry" - she says it in a different tone of voice the second time, and it changes the meaning. Rachel realises that what Samara meant was not "I don't want to hurt people, but I do" - what she meant was "I do want to hurt people". She wants to cause pain. But no one understands that, because we think children are innocent. Rachel realises that the reason Samara's mother k-lled her was because Samara was evil and she was trying to save people from her. We're supposed to see Samara as the victim, when the truth is that she's the one who caused all this suffering.
