Viltrox 35mm F1.8 FE Better Than GMaster? Sony A7IV

The Viltrox 35mm F1.8 FE lens is built for full frame Sony and Nikon Z mount cameras. In this video I place this against my favourite lens the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM. Can the Viltrox lens keep up?
I am surprised this lens performs very well in so many different situations. It is a sharp lens, has fast auto focus, low focus breathing and low chromatic aberrations. The one downside I did find about this lens is the minimum focus distance. It is not great for a 35mm focal length.

biggest factor for me is the focus breathing. Very impressive!

I've been using that Viltrox 35mm 1.8 for 2 weeks now and I found two issues. The weird flare coming from the corner and the AF in some situations, like when you use the flexible spot in small areas. I filmed a wedding ceremony and I placed the spot in bride's face and the AF was really confused. Overall, this lens is quite impressive for the price.

Not sure what model camera you have but it might be a good idea with any lens to register the faces before the ceremony as a secondary trigger for detection with AF. Not many people utilize the feature.

Small flexible spot is sketchy w any lens. Medium catches more. Especially if not in prime lighting conditions or conditions w heavy shadows

Big issue with the new Viltrox’s. They don’t adapt with the new Sony cameras. A lot of the time shooting photos with them, they freeze up and stop working. Let me know if you have the same issues!

I experienced this with the 85mm the other day. Wasn't sure if it was isolated to me... but this is interesting to see you say. I own the 24mm and the 85mm. I've been shooting for about two months now. I'll continue to watch the lense performance. Thank you for sharing this!

I’m having the same problem, after some time taking photos the focus just stop working, looks like the focus motor stopped working, I need to reboot the camera so the lens starts working again

Did you solve this issue? I already contacted the seller from AliExpress (where I bought it) but unsuccessfully, they take so long to reply and avoid the warranty questions

The 35mm F1.4 GM is one of the GOAT in lens world. This 35mm F1.8 is a good lens in it's own right but no way it's competing with the GM.

Problem with most cheap lenses is the weird flare that you get. If you mainly shoot under controlled lighting and don't rely on autofocus, cheap lens can really do the job while saving you a ton of money.

I love the 35mm focal range but my current 35mm lens is a sigma art lens on the mc-11 adapter so it's extremely heavy and quite a bit longer than I'd expect for a 35mm due to the adapter. For the price, I'm definitely thinking about picking this up for a lighter on the go setup

i have a pocket 6k and i'm really tempted by the sony a74 cause of the small factor, great dymanic range, autofocus. i mostly do films but traveling the world with the pocket can be a pain with all the gears. would you say the pocket is better for quality or the sony?

I'm only a hobbyist but I went from the pocket 6k to the A74 and for me at least it was for sure the right decision. Pocket 6k screen was so hard to see outdoors, camera was too big, had to carry 4-5 batteries, etc. The Sony is just so much easier to carry and use and I like it much more than I ever liked the 6k.

for videos a little of problem in AF but its usable. but photos? it sucks.... it says its focused but it isn't. had better success with manual focus. im into events so this thing is horrible for photos.

Hi Alex. I own the 35mm GM. I agree with Jason that the Viltrox is great value, but when it comes to absolutely TRUST that your lens will perform, nothing beats the GM. I shot a wedding recently with my 35GM on one of my A7IV bodies, and it’s really reassuring in those “never to be repeated” moments, you can trust your set up will deliver sharp results. If you’re shooting anything that is non-repeatable such as events, GM all the way! Hope that helps.

The Viltrox lack of any weather sealing. Samyang 35 1.8 or Sony 35 1.8 are much better options if you would need any weather sealing.

I owned the 24mm viltrox 1.8, ran it on my A7C for over a year honestly its not great. Very soft on the corners, the AF is just okay not even close to oem sony tho and yeah its pretty mediocre to be honest.
