Thanks for a great video, Richard and perfect timing. I just got a new camera and a 35mm(Rokinon) f/1.4 lens. I was just going to search your videos to see how you shot with 35mm and you just posted this.

Ah good old Rodney Copperbottom!! I might just go and get one of these lenses...I've been thinking for a while now about geeting a 35mm, have been thinking about the Sigma art...but you may swayed me!!
@nightscapeimages.richard

Yes I love Rodney ..!! The 35mm Sigma is one of their older designs and not as good as the more modern 28mm or 40mm Sigma lenses. This lens would go well on the A73 I reckon.

Another great video! Thank you. I've ummed and rrrd for so long, it was driving me nuts trying to figure out what lens combo to get. If anyone's interested, and uses a high MP such as z7 or anything approaching 50mp, I've finally settled on TWO lenses only for when I have energy to hike it a bit: 20mm 1.8, and 50mm 1.4 (or 1.8 etc). With the z7 you can crop nicely in DX mode to a not too shappy 20mp approx. Easily enough for most uses. So, I was very happy to find I have 4 lens lenghts at my disposal: 20mm, 30mm (dx), 50mm, 75mm (dx) - I'm pretty chuffed I can keep it light as I need to hike a bit to get to locations where I am. I'll test this twin combo over next season. The difference between 20mm and 30mm is actually nicely different, and 'almost' 35mm.

Hi Richard, thanks for another great video. I too would agree that Viltrox offer very good quality for the money, I have a 24mm one. Loved the photos you showed. Particularly those with Orion in the background, it was great to see the colours, Rigel blue, Sirus white and Betelgeuse orange! The shot with the windmill, was that a modified Z6? The nebulosity was terrific.

Matt has done a initial review of it. I loaned mine out to 2 people across the pond from me to use and review. Then when I get it back I will know a lot of its short comings and it’s positives. But I can say it is a sturdy well built lens, all metal construction. A unique lens hood. I don’t expect miracles from a lens that was $129.00 US but if it preforms decent enough I haven’t gone wrong.

Wow those 2 minute iso 800 tracked images look so clean, can't really tell on youtube if they're better than those you previously/usually take at 1 minute iso 1600 but at a guess I'd say they'd have to be depending on whether the camera is iso invariant and from/to what iso. The little one loves the camera mate, future in modelling or even photography maybe? Is she your granddaughter, I have 5 grannys of 3 boys and 2 girls that melt my heart especially when they visit their great grandmother my 87 yr old mum

A very good comparison from in the field which is the best. With the Viltrox having a manual aperture ring, would that allow you to shoot timelapse in a slightly closed down aperture where as the Nikkor goes to wide open in 'P'rogram mode?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks as always for watching Les. Well yes you could do that . .but that makes it the same as Aperture Priority. So you could do that with the Nikon lens also. In fact when I shoot the Laowa 15mm f2 for timelapse I often use Aperture Priority because it's a manual focus lens. I would like to be able to limit the amount of Aperture when shooting timelapse in P mode with the Nikon f1.8 lenses .. but you can't have it all I guess.

Good review with awesome images, but you didn't shoot at f1.8, how are single exposures of this lens at f1.8. Also when are you reviewing viltrox 20 mm 1.8 lens for nikon z. Thanks.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really good point. I did shoot some images previously at f1.8 which were not included in this video. A lot more vignetting but pretty much equivalent to the Nikon 35mm wide open in other characteristics. I haven't used the Viltrox 20mm .. maybe one day.

Hi Richard. I'm a Canon shooter, so I'm wondering, in your experience, do these thrid-party lenses varry much from one mount to another? In other words, can I expect the review you did to apply if I were to get the Canon R mount version of the lens? Thanks!
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Gordon. Unfortunately Viltrox don't make lenses for the Canon RF mount . .in fact I don't think Canon want anyone else to do so.

Hi. I just bought a Nikon Z5 and a Viltrox 35mm, and in my case, mounting the lens is quite difficult; I have to use some force. Did anyone else experience this? Is this some kind of defect, or is the mount supposed to get easier over time? I used to have a Canon, and I never had these issues.
