I sold my Samyang 135mm a while back and missed the unique look it brought to portraits at that focal length. This new lens not only brings that vibe back but seems to perform even better than the Samyang did. That was my philosophy when I sold the 135GM and replaced it with the Samyang (which I'll now replace with this lens). I loved the GM lens, but didn't use the focal length often enough to justify it. I used the money from the 135GM to buy the 50mm F1.4 GM, which I use all the time.
@GaryBox20 күн бұрын
As a Sony user myself I've been keenly waiting for the Viltrox LAB series. I own the 135mm GM which I use to photograph dogs which I'll keep. My current 85mm lens is the Samyang 85mm f1.4 first edition which I love for people portraits. I also own the Samyang 45mm f1.8. I can certainly see myself buying a Viltrox lens, just not sure if it will be 85mm or 50mm. It's interesting to see that the rear element is quire recessed into the lens body. Looks like they could make a version for camera systems with a longer flange distance (Fuji GFX) if they wanted to. I suspect this lens would cover the GFX's sensor. It looks like it's similarly designed to the Sigma Art lenses: the edges of the image circle that have lower optical quality (every single lens has those lower quality edges that show physicals vignetting) are chopped off / not captured by a Full Frame sensor.

Excellent review again Dustin. Appreciate the detailed look! What a shame Viltrox couldn't just follow standards and had to invent their own faux-aperture ring that sounds very frustrating to use. 74 mm = 7,4 cm... so, think about this lens being a "macro" one or not and you'll have your answer. Metric system goes in increments from 10 to 10, making calculation so much easier and errors more than things of the past (unless not being concentrated).

I hear that argument, but the problem is that the companies themselves use the term. Tamron's VXD (a voice coil design) stands for Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive. It's hard not to use the word torque when they put it right in the name :)

From Marriam Webster (and every other dictionary) 1 : a force that produces or tends to produce rotation or torsion an automobile engine delivers torque to the drive shaft also : a measure of the effectiveness of such a force that consists of the product of the force and the perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the axis of rotation 2 : a turning or twisting force. Sure.. If 1 is willing to carry that lens being at 1.2kg.. then all is good. The price is excellent. All else is also on the good side. Just heavy and maybe big. I guess.. making a lens bigger, heavier and cheaper while maintaining the sharpness quick af and etc is easier and already happening long ago. Almost all 3rd party does that.. releasing a lens cheaper than original but being heavier and bigger.. Now when can we really see a breakthrough.. for eg same 135 f1.8 but size like 50mm and weights 600grams. Now that would be the real interesting and technology advancement. Sure.. make it cost $1000 more than the GM.. But can they do it.
@DustinAbbottTWI21 күн бұрын
It may be possible to do, but is there a market for a third party lens $1000 above a GM? I doubt they'll go for that.
@sgpork21 күн бұрын
@ i wont say if there is a market. But im sure someone would buy them. Maybe especiallly the pro or the richer hobbyist. Who doesnt like or want to carry lighter and smaller gear. Money .. oh well. Some people just has more than others or willing to spend. But like I said above. We just see cheaper but bigger and heavier option many times already but when can we have more expensive but smaller and lighter. Im sure some people would buy them.
@OccultDemonCassette20 күн бұрын
A 135mm the size of a 50mm? Seems like you won't be able to get something like that with standard photographic elements. The physics just doesn't add up. MAYBE if they were to develop a lens using metamaterials, but I still thing we're at least a decade or two away from seeing an affordable consumer-grade Metalens on a photographic system. That's metamaterial optics are more or less in their infancy stage.

This thing weighs a god damn ton. And no photographer thinks heavy is somehow great, whatsoever. Why doesn't Voltrox learn that mirrorless means light and not having a tank to lug around. Are they unable to make decent plastics or composites? Most people will decide for the Samyang/Rokinon..
@DustinAbbottTWI20 күн бұрын
Hmmm, I would say from the comments that its probably not true that most people will go for the Samyang, but I wouldn't say their goal here was small and light. They wanted to make the best 135mm optically (and functionally) that they could, and while I would loved it to be 400g lighter, that's about all I can complain about.
@oliversteiner081520 күн бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI I could imagine, that your audience is more technically demanding than the average customer. I use the Samyang 135mm on my A7r IV (for nature and portrait), more or less non-stop wide open at F1.8 and I'm totally happy with its optical performance. If I was debating to upgrade, I'd get the Sony 135m GM because I think it's still the best lens overall. And the Samyang already is a bit too heavy for my liking, especially usually it's not the only lens I have to carry around..

Personally not a fan of the mechanics, the aperture ring, as well as the LED display and built-in Bluetooth which are unnecessary drains on the camera's battery. But a good job by the optical engineers. Interesting that the vignetting is so low, yet there is still noticeable deformation of the bokeh off-axis, in contrast to the Nikon Plena which has low vignetting and minimal off-axis bokeh deformation. The only lenses I can think of that might give this a run for the under $1,000 best optical performance crown are the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 50/2, and possibly the Sigma 40/1.4 Art (when stopped down to f1.8). The Sigma 70/2.8 Macro Art is pretty good value for its performance too.
@DustinAbbottTWI21 күн бұрын
Those are some good options, though I'm not sure I can go with the Sigma 70. That lenses had a lot of compromises, in my opinion.
@gillesmatheronpro21 күн бұрын
LED display : you don't HAVE TO look at it, as your viewfinder and backscreen shall propose the same data. Bluetooth : you DO NOT have to use it, for the lens has a USB-C connector. bokeh "off-axis" : do you make so many portraits with the model "off-axis", or Christmas lights in the same style ? Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 50 mm f/2 : what type of autofocus system does this lens have ? NIKKOR Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena : what is the usual price tag attached to this lens ? Sigma 40 mm f/1.4 Art : what is the focal length of this lens ? Sigma 70/2.8 Macro Art : what are the focal length and maximum aperture of this lens ? You have a strange way of comparing things ! And, actually, this is not comparing, rather dropping words then chosing which characteristics you want to evaluate or not. Thankfully, Dustin Abbott and folks at DxO Mark are comparing. Really, by measuring feature for feature and publishing factual data. Then, if all this is not enough and you still find yourself "not a fan of" this lens, I suggest purchasing an Angénieux one. This French brand specializes in cinema lens (after producing photo lenses for a while, during the 1980s and 1990s) considered "perfect"... but. But they might not be "perfect" enough for you, and the price may have you think twice before looking for "perfection".
@Bayonet180921 күн бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI I base that estimation on the late Robert O'Toole's test titled "1X High-End Lens Test" on his site, "Close Up Photography", where the Sigma 70mm Art matched dedicated machine vision lenses that are an order of magnitude more expensive. Admittedly, that test was only at one focal distance/magnification.
@Bayonet180921 күн бұрын
@@gillesmatheronpro I suggest taking a more charitable reading of my comment, as you seem to be misunderstanding many parts of it. Regarding the LED display and Bluetooth: I was not criticising their usefulness, as you claim, but the fact that they exist and, as far as I know, can not be disabled, and thus draw battery power, which causes a negative effect on the shooting experience even if I were to never look at/use these features. Regarding off-axis bokeh: you may not find it a metric of importance to a lens' performance, but reviewers do test for it so I can not be the only one who cares. Regarding the lens comparisons I provided: the point was not to compare with lenses of similar focal lengths or maximum apertures, as you have misunderstood, but to respond to the title of the video, i.e., whether this lens is the best lens under $1,000. I reasonably presumed that no qualification of focal length or maximum aperture was made in that rhetorical titular question, and thus that any lens in existence (as long as it is under $1,000), could be considered as competition. In this respect it is you who has a "strange way of comparing things", as your proffered alternative, an Angénieux lens, is about as far from meeting the under $1,000 criteria as possible. I might also suggest that Angénieux lenses may not be as "perfect" as you assume, because lens design is a compromise of a multitude of factors, and even just the umbrella factor of aberrations can not be completely eliminated. In other words, no lens is "perfect", not even with an unlimited budget. Finally, I never wrote that I was, ""not a fan of" this lens". You have taken that quote out of its original context. What I wrote was that I was, "not a fan of the mechanics [of the lens]", and explained why, with reference to the aperture ring (which Dustin also criticised), and the LED display and Bluetooth features. But overall, my impression is quite positive in fact.

I don't even know what to say about something like that. The company VILTROX builds lenses from China. It may sound strange, but the Chinese definitely want to win the world market for themselves. As an ambitious professional photographer, you should not even consider buying such lenses. This is throwing dirt on well-known manufacturers who have been building great lenses for decades. I can't understand why any photographer is enthusiastic about these lenses. As a matter of principle, you shouldn't buy one. And you, who loved taking photos with Zeiss Otus, now sounds unbelievable.

Very nice optic qualities and functionalities. Big brands need to be worried by Viltrox who already delivered amazing lenses and seems to launch an high end line with this lab one. Just a con for me is this aperture ring with its unnecessary 1/9 clics… a true « manual » aperture ring like GM or other viltrox would have been sufficient. The best would have been to let it under one kilo to have a better balance and less weight. It s the same weight as the sigma old art line for reflex which is known to be heavy and more heavy than Nikon canon and Sony ones. This is probably it s only disadvantage vs the other brands.
