I agree with a lot of what you said. One thing that I found very annoying, was the tax nonsense. I'm a Canadian. I create my videos in Canada and I sell to Canadians in Canadian dollars. Vimeo insists that I fill out American tax forms - Ridiculous! Canadian are responsible to report any money they make to Revenue Canada. It has nothing to do with the US or Vimeo. I have sold video equipment in the US to large companies like Adorama and B & H. No tax forms were necessary. If there is a copyright claim again something on Vimeo, they delete it, no discussion, no appeal. If you have a copyright hit on KZbin, they block the video, they don't delete it. This is problem for me because, I record a lot of live theatre, concerts and dance performances. They all have music, I assume they have the right to use it. The videos are distributed to the artists, their friends and family, it is not like a film. When I post things on Vimeo, I worry. I also run into the "Vimeo Resistance" that you describe. A lot of people are hesitant to use Vimeo. It is also difficult to drive people to Vimeo. The Vimeo people are difficult to work with too, but I still have an account.

Thanks for sharing your experience! We streamed our film as a virtual screening in collaboration with a Cinema. We found as you say there was a lot of friction involved for folks to watch the film. It was too hard for people to rent the film.
@WillFons4 жыл бұрын
Yeah its not easy at all, I feel like making a movie is hard enough, and then you have to worry about all the work that comes after that, just getting people to watch it,

What kills me the most about these platforms is how they make potential buyers sign up just to rent or view your film. I created a WIX site to avoid this and they are doing the same "sign up" crap

This video is the best! I appreciate you so much for explaining this as well as you did. I guess I’ll look elsewhere for my film to be on a VOD platform. Any suggestions???

I see this video is 3 1/2 years old, but there's a new monetization platform called VidaFair, and if you still check this comment section, I'm curious to know what you think about it? Thanks.

Thanks for letting me know about Vidafair . I wasn't aware of it . But I'll definitely check it out

But if you have your own site it's nice for people to be on your site and not have to leave to go to vimeo, no? The most frustrating feeling was paying $39 / mth for teachable and if you can't use their "intuitive user friendly" user face you're screwed. The customer service on teachable is horrible for the $39 / mth plan. Zero help other than email. It's not intuitive and it's comparable to building a whole other site to host your course. I'm hoping Vimeo to sell courses is better, easier and worth the $20 /mth.

thank you for your video ..do you have any idea which other platforms to sell/rent own videos/tutorials are better or are you using
@WillFons3 жыл бұрын
I used Amazon for a while but they turned their backs on indie filmmaker and started to favor big studios. IMO building up a youtube channel and monetizing your videos is still the best way to go.
