Hoonigan Project Garage

3 жыл бұрын

It happened: the king of buying, selling, and trading cars got played. If you play the game long enough, it’s bound to happen. What was originally advertised as a 102k 911, turned out to be a 400,000+ mile 911. Oddly enough… we’re even more into it now.
This project is made possible from parts and DIY articles from Pelican Parts! Need parts? Bought an old Porsche and have no idea what you're doing? Hit Pelican!

The Allen key you used has rounded tips for removing bolts at an angle, it's very nice for these occasions but when you can get straight in like that, use a normal tip Allen, it will have way more contact surface and not just 6 little dots of contact around that "ball" shaped tip. EDIT: I see you got the right ones later on, gonna leave this here anyway.

Interesting video. I have been a Porsche tech for 49 years and I normally can get both headers off of a real rusted system within 30 minutes. You also did not center the hole for your new stud on the one you had to drill out the head. Also I can get those oil tubes off in 15 seconds without your complex system of doing it especially as you where installing new ones. Never undo exhaust nuts anywhere on the system without using proper torches. You just made so much more trouble for yourselves. Good luck with the car as I agree with you on the high mileage. Keep trying and never give up...

Two holes line up to bolt jig on then final hole lined up drill bit to drill out final hole then just tapped out new threads. Used stainless studs with lock nuts going forward. Worked awesome. You can use a hardened drill insert on final hole alignment guide hole to keep it perfect

I'm an engine builder at a porsche restauration company in germany, my first thought was don't try to fix an oil leak on these things it most certainly will end in an engine rebuild. The first problem are those head studs. And to replace the oil drain pipes you have to remove the cam housings. Don't use the collapsable oil pipes they tend to leak rather quick. Best tip for working on an porsche engine, always remove it from the car, it only takes you 20 minutes and makes everything so much easier. And another tip, use time-serts instead of heli-coils, they are way stronger and cleaner in my opinion.

Nice car. You should have used a carbide bit on a rotary tool to cut a vertical slot (right before you hit threads) into the barrel nuts, Then you use s chisel and a hammer to open the barrel nuts. Once you do that, they come right off. I have an 85 911 which is an east coast and has seen some weather (before I got it). All if the barrel nuts were rusted to the point that an Allen key would not bite. I used a Dremel and several carbide bits to cut the barrels. I didn't break a single stud!!. Regarding the oil drain tubs these two piece units are aftermarket. The original tubes are one piece (which require the heads to be removed) in any case crushing the old ones to get them off is the way most mechanics do it, quick and easy (unless you're not reusing the tubes replaced replaced o-rings). Good luck with the car!

Just a suggestion an old engine rebuilder taught me to heat the nut and the stud/bolt end then use a paraffin it must be a PARAFFIN candle and run it around the stud/bolt and the nut end the paraffin will chase the heat up the threads. Even vertically. Just a suggestion for the masses.

ProTip: if the head is aluminum and the stud is broken inside the head. You can just add material to the stud with a welder, until you have enough stud exposed to get a vice grip on the stud. The steel weld won’t stick to the aluminum head, only the stud.

I love that damn Porsche! I’d love to own one. I can’t wait to see more of this car. Sounds sick with the new exhaust. I can’t believe it has that many miles! Porsche really made a solid car.

the more I've found out about these old Porsches, the more I like them...mainly because I have one of Porsche's...earlier designs...and so much of what's under the expensive version is like what's under the People's Version.

Im not a Porsche guy but i am a air cooled vw guy and those engines are the same. The best way to get those tubes out is to grab them with vise grips or channel locks hard enough to collapse them and yank them out. They bend pretty easily.
