One of my favourite songs from them. “The Ghost in my head has forgiven me, lifted its curse upon me” that line has to be one of the most powerful ones i ever heard in my life. I still listen to this song when i feel utterly depressed.

It's not faith based on evidence, getting on an airplane. It's a calculated risk based on probabilities, knowledge of statistics related to air travel, an understanding of the rigors of testing in mechanical engineering, knowledge of the automated piloting systems and the air traffic controller network, and a cost benefit analysis using Bayesian inference which guides the decision to get plane for any length of time. Neither faith or belief in the pilot, the aircraft, or any sub component is required, only calculation. Faith is belief in the absence of evidence. If you have sufficiently grounded and demonstrable evidence, faith is never required. If you have neither grounded or demonstrable evidence why would you not simply say "I don't know", leave it at that, and admit you are simply taking a risk because you *think* the outcome will be positive. "Faith" has always seemed like a concept which evolved to allow the believer to feel less uncomfortable with unsubstantiated ideas which they know they can't know any truth about. Faith is saving face against and feeling good about the idea you're probably wrong. "Not knowing" and admitting the fact is more existentially threatening to most people than making shit up, therefore "faith". No one "enjoys" the feeling of not knowing when it comes to something important. The easy path is to have faith in some idea when the truth is you don't know (which is a form of lying). The courageous path is to stand in the face of the lack of knowledge, to proclaim the truth of your insufficiency, and to resist the overwhelming temptation to provide an answer before your claims can be demonstrated and falsified. None of this is to tear down religion, religious people, their beliefs, or them as people. I love Biblical stories for their symbolic utility, but we should at least raise our standards by being honest with what we're doing. Faith is fine, just don't claim it is used in areas where Bayesian inference is the real mechanism behind beliefs which lead to actions.

The lyrics "the grave of our youth is up ahead" is about aging. The next line "life has become a burden" seems to be more personal. A lot of Akerfeldt's Pale Communion and In Cauda Venenum lyrics deal with aging and the inevitability of the passage of time. The song takes another tinge of explaining natural phenomena with humans such as "we carried along through squalor, with an inborn need to dominate and possess". It seems Akerfeldt is pointing out how meaningless it is to compete with others for domination when our time is so short. But the struggle "gives birth to an anger inside" which seems like a bitter feud between individuals. The song seems to move freely between Akerfeldt's personal issues and broader observations about life and aging. I think the song is called faith in others because the passage of time shows that people come in and out of our lives and it sometimes seems meaningless to place faith in others when reaching for them is like grasping melting ice.

Yes, it is upon despair that we can give meaning to life. Everything has an end. Humanity will have an end, it will be over in a matter of time that seems no longer than a single breath on the grand scale of the universe. We may fight among each other for earthly delights, whose values we give in our short-sighted ignorance. We spend centuries trying to understand where we come from, where we may go. Yet, if the answer remains unknown, even if our entire planet suddenly disappeared in this very moment, I would still not say that all this despair was meaningless. It is this short time I have alive that makes every hour, every day all the more meaningful. I am deeply saddened by the fact that I may never see some scientific discoveries that are on the horizon for example, but that doesn't mean that all the ones before me of after me are less valuable. Our existence, even if just an accident, still occurred. I still met my friends, I still learned much about the world. It is valuable to me. Why should I spend my limited existence hoping without any reasonable evidence in an eternal being who might give me salvation (provided that I of course uphold his age-old laws, or else...), when the mere notion of eternity is something that my brain is unable to even comprehend. This philosophy is what makes me wake up every day. Knowing that there is an end I'm slowly approaching, along with every other human being on this planet, whose happiness and fulfillment in life is just as important as mine. That is what I will try to work towards. That maybe those who come after me might better enjoy the fruits of my generation. And there is no god, no supernatural, no eternal being or power that can falsify this, because this IS life. My cat can give me greater peace and happiness than any thousand-year-old text. Now, I am still only 24. My views may be not well-formed, I may yet be too naive. I might be still the child asleep in the rain, as in the song. But I hope that the future will give us greater trust towards each other as human beings. And if I can make at least one person happier with the standards I live by, then all the despair will have been worth it in the end. I wish all the best to anyone who reads this.
@nicoarmin8997
@nicoarmin8997 4 жыл бұрын
Your tangent about faith is bald equivocation. The faith you're using for 'faith' in a pilot and aircraft is substitution for 'trust' whereas 'faith' in a deity requires more than trust- it requires suspension of disbelief and a religious devotion to a deity.

My wife once gave me a very simplistic definition of evil. She said evil can be simply described by a desire to dominate and control. If we look at all stories, superhero villains, religio/moral stories etc, the difference between the hero and the villain can often by narrowed down to a desire for control from the villain and the lack of from the hero. Probably stems from God’s adherence to free will. Very intriguing concept. Shout out to Erik for thee fantastic rec, Opeth’s new material is so deep and layered, they make for absolutely gorgeous discussions on this channel.

I've said it before in comments to your videos when Scandinavian metal bands were concerned, English is not their first language so some lyrical choices/things might come across as a tad odd to native speakers. Regarding this song though, if you know your Opeth you know they changed style completely exactly around the time this was released. Not only musically (ie progressive death metal -> far softer-sounding progressive rock, sans growling), but the lyrics that used to be more ambiguous and not particularly personal suddenly started invoking a lot down-to-earth language and a lot of "you's" and "me's", completely un-Opeth-like. This coincides with the fact that the leader singer/guitarist and songwriter Åkerfeldt was going through a difficult divorce right at that time. This song in particular has since then been recognized as basically his feelings, or just a snapshot of a train of thought, about the divorce.

Probably my favorite song from the Pale Communion album...In coming; "I wish Opeth would go back to the growls comments"..lol. I love the "old" Opeth, but I really do like the last 4 albums, they're very good. Last time I saw them Mikael asked; "what do you want to hear"?, I yelled, "Faith In Others"...He threw his head back and his eyes got bigger...He was probably thinking, "wow it wasn't Demon of the Fall"..LOL. Yet people demand their faith to be true and even feel entitled to live forever but not normally but in eternal bliss even. And of those I know very few actually do that in a humble way. They possess their religion as much as others physical things and brag with it. Most have to talk about it so much...like if they talk more to themselves like if they had to reassure themselves constantly or otherwise the feeling vanishes. So many are so broken despite of their faith that it is very hard to even see the point. The older I get the more it makes sense that religion got made in order to endure reality. But to take on a believe to escape despair...how selfish is that?

I'm sorry but your argument about faith is fallacious. There's a massive difference between reasonable expectation based on evidence, and faith. Faith is belief without evidence. When I sit on a chair, I don't have faith that it will hold me. I understand it may fail, but I also have reasonable evidence that it will hold me if it appears to be sound or has held me before. When I get on a plane I have reasonable expectation based on evidence that it will be safe. Given my understanding of the safety record of flying and the amount of training the pilot has gone through. Very few people step on a plane with faith. Faith would mean stepping on a plane with complete ignorance that anything could possibly go wrong. We fly because we weigh the risk to the reward and find the gamble to be more in our favor. I am a person of zero faith. Don't attempt to assign attributes to people in order to gain leverage in your argument. That is completely fallacious.

Ok bye. See here’s the thing, people aren’t here to entertain you because your entertainment is based on condition. Putting together a video takes time, effort and thought. You get to sit down on your couch doing absolutely nothing but clicking play and enjoying free content at no expense to you, yet that’s not good enough because they give preference for people that help pay their bills? Completely selfish if I might say so myself, and self centered. This is what’s wrong with society, people that think they are owed something when putting absolutely no effort to benefit anyone else but themselves and throwing negative shade towards those that provide free content. Grow up.
@tonystank9739
@tonystank9739 4 жыл бұрын
soakedbearrd Goddamn, I just asked. I kind of have to agree with you that society feels like it’s owed something when it’s not. I’ve seen people request for at most a YEAR and still have not had it featured. I agree with Galahan. No one feels like paying large sums of cash to get their song reacted to, it’s unreasonable. It makes people feel like they aren’t cared for or left out, because they prefer the people that will give money, which is reasonable to be honest. It’s just the feeling of being left out or forgotten, which will determine your fan base. And that feeling is determining my will to stay or leave. Not to be negative or mean, that’s just my perspective.
