Yea there were people with higher verts or more power, but he combined it all. He had a lot of great powerful windmills, but also many great two handers and one arm extensions that seemed like he’d never make it but somehow did. It was his ability to combine all the things that make a dunker great. Spatial awareness, flair, finesse, power, accuracy. A lot of analysts and NBA greats consider him the best in game dunker by a wide margin, and I tend to agree.

But because of all of these interactions with so many players, especially working in service to them, gives me a decent idea if someone is genuinely kind.

I don't think he was underrated at all, he was one of the biggest stars of the 2000's, and for good reason, because like you said, great player, and he wasn't just an athletic highflyer. It's just that he didn't win rings, or got bounced off early in the playoffs repeatedly, so he just isn't looked at like his peers, but I don't think there was any doubt how great he was as a player.
