Yesterday news broke that former Tennessee Titan quarterback Vince Young was broke.
As you can imagine, this has been a big story.
How could a player go through twenty-six million dollars -- after taxes -- in about six years? Especially since Young spent much of his time in Nashville, one of the most affordable pro cities in the country. So we asked the question on 3HL today, if you saw Vince Young spending large sums of money in the city tell us about it. So where did all that money go?
The answer, according to 3HL callers, is chain restaurants and commercial airline flights that he bought up all the available seats on.
You need to listen to the entire audio for yourself, but here are the highlights of waiter reports from the city's chain restaurants:
1. Vince Young's favorite restaurant to hang out in? T.G.I. Friday's on Nashville's West End Avenue.
It was here he once dropped $6k on a meal for he and other players.
Yes, $6k.
At a T.G.I.Friday's.
Players would congregate at the bar
2. The bartenders, who got to know Vince thanks to his frequent visits at T.G.I. Friday's, told Vince they'd make him a "special" drink.
It was a melon drop.
Which VY had everytime he came to the restaurant.
3. During his rookie season VY spent $5k a week at the Cheesecake Factory.
He always picked up the tab for multiple teammates.
4. On a 2007 Southwest flight from Nashville to Houston, VY bought all of the seats except for about ten passengers who'd bought tickets before he could buy the entire plane.
The plane seated 130 passengers, meaning VY purchased 120 of the seats.
5. After each home football game, VY headed for the Morton's downtown where he would sit at the bar and order $600 shots of Louis XIII.
That can add up in a hurry.
6. LenDale White consumed quantities of Patron tequila that would kill a normal man.
In fact, LenDale was kicked out of the T.G.I. Friday's in Cool Spring for bringing his own bottles of Patron to the restaurant's happy hour.
White once ordered 75 shots of Patron at Dave and Buster's -- located next door to the Opryland Hotel in Opry Mills Mall which makes this even better -- spent thirty minutes there, and paid a $1500 tab.
Again, these are all reports from restaurant employees in Nashville. You need to listen to the audio yourself from our 3HL radio show. I promise it will be some of the most entertaining radio you'll listen to this year.
So where did all VY's millions go?
No one knows, but if these stories are representative of his lifestyle hundreds of thousands of his dollars went to Nashville's chain restaurants.

There is a old saying that a fool and his money are soon parted. Vince didn't think his career would end so soon but he is his own worst enemy.

Junior Bridgeman, a bench player for the most of his NBA career with the L.A Lakers only made about 200,000 for his career, but his net worth now is 500,000,000 million. Its all about your individual goals for your future.

It's not "all about" that. Unless you're born into great wealth, you need a lot of luck to get rich. Plenty of people have done everything right and never got rich.

Anyone who faces sudden wealth, with little to no understanding of how to manage or monitor it, is more than likely going to go broke. (athletes, entertainers, lottery winners etc.) The exceptions are the lucky people who find honest professionals to help them. It's not like Vince Young's story is unique or race-related. Watch ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary, "Broke," and listen to Bernie Kosar's story. I despise the weird pleasure some fools take in mocking young athletes who are now in financial hell and without ways to support themselves and their families. Who cares where V. Young spent his money!? I'm not saying that he's a victim and totally innocent. In fact, he is all over the place admitting his mistakes. No one should judge someone for mistakes that almost everyone else would make if they were put in a similar situation. I wish there was a more efficient way to connect wealthy athletes with legitimate money caretakers. No legit. money manager would ever allow this story to happen. Half of Vince's money, at least, would be out of the picture and invested in legit. asset classes. We need a new system to help athletes keep their money.

Young thought he'd be making a lot more money and improve upon his 30 million. I agree that what he did wasn't smart but I don't think it was moronic. Most celebrated athletes believe the contracts will keep coming.

you're not going broke when you got 26 mill and blow 4k at tgifridays. you could go everyday for life and not blow through that shit. the real reason these dudes go broke is because of taxes, and they're not told about it, especially the jock tax. the jock tax is when they get taxed 5%-10% for an away game. so you lose 30 percent federal, 20+% state, 15% for your agent and 5-10% for jock tax, you also get taxed a good 20k for accolades like rookie of the year or winning the super bowl and getting your ring. so with the taxes and agent these dudes are losing 70% of their shit before they even get the check while thinking they're getting 26 mill and blow money like they've got 26 mill and don't realize it until the irs calls up. so they're screwed from their rookie contract and keep playing trying to get their second contract just to cover the first and gotta hope they get the 3rd contract to try and actually make money, but guess what the average life span of a pro athelete is 3 years. and that equals the recipe for them going broke.

+Kharmatos13 Taxes is a bitch, but when you hire unprepared and non-trustable people, that's what you get. This dude was letting his uncle and skimpy agent pimp him out behind his back. Taking his money and he didn't even know it. That's why I'm glad athletes nowadays are not letting their agents handle their financial duties and are getting financial advisors.

On the surface, it may seem to most that his behavior was nothing more than a young star athlete wallowing in his attainment (and in the company of friends). Underneath though- a man who can't stand living in his own skin.

Vince Young made a lot of dumb decisions at the start of his NFL career. He was great at Texas though. Now that he has his act back together and has grown up I hope he gets a job next season on a team at least as a backup.

I think the new rookie guidelines will help with this kind of behavior. If these young guys know they have to Earn there money they wont fuk up so quick. Steve youngs talent in college made him a god. In the NFL he wasnt even a backup. So look at the nfl and gay rules on contact right now and even steve young would of put Montana to shame.
