When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, may failed to realize that humanity was still reeling from the AIDS pandemic which had begun 30 years earlier. In this lecture, we discuss the zoonotic origins of HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2, the pathogenesis of infection, and available vaccines and therapeutics.

- Who Am I? -
I’m Vincent Racaniello, Earth’s Virology Professor, and I believe that education should be free.
I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this KZbin channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more.
New videos are uploaded several times each week.
I do not run ads on our work as it is disruptive to learning. We depend on your support.

Thank you for the very informative tale of two pandemics - I had forgottten much of the history of HIV and AIDS and did not know why it could not be "cured".

The case Vincent makes backing the claim " I have no doubt in my mind that this virus is from natural origins not from a lab" leaves plenty of room for doubt. Given the source, this case is one of the best available for natural origins. The cases I have seen for lab origins also leave plenty of room for doubt also. We may never know with absolute certainty the origin for SARS-Cov2 but given global importance of that pandemic it is important to continue to search. Regardless of which origin, we should be doing all we can, as Vincent states, to prevent the possibility of future novel zoonotic virus from all animal markets. But he left out that we just as importantly need to assure that globally all lab research work is not only as close to 100% safe as possible and does not pose existential threats to humanity.

Agreed. Until we find the intermediate species, we're still at 50/50 chance of either.. It's painful to watch other scientists not be curious on this point. 😢

58:31 If I'm remembering correctly a dose of mrna vaccine costs around $125 and a course of Paxlovid $1600. It may not be a good idea to get boosted every 3 months, but there's been a peak for the last four years between December and January. It would be interesting to study in senior care centers if it were more cost effective to vaccinate prior to that period or treat with Paxlovid.

Thank you for debunking the "need" for continuing "boosters".

Once you accept that boosters are unnecessary, you're a step away from realising that for the young and healthy, the vaccine itself was unnecessary.

01:00:00 Saying that all human vruses have an animal origin is not saying very much. The lab leakers would say that the bat lady was tinkering with bat coronaviruses, so proof of zoonotic origin is true of both hypotheses.

I have a theory though. Zoonotic disease start in several places at once. I think that happened with covid, but I do not have proof of that. Imo that is why there are different strains. Maybe birds and bats spread things. Sars, mers, covid 19...

@@wednesdayschild3627 Multiple zoonotic spillovers are theoretically possible, but nobody disputes that the first two strains of Covid in Wuhan come from a single spillover event, which then split into two.

Most "lab leakers" support the "genetic engineered" narrative (especially those who are "lab leak" conspiracy theorists) for which there is no evidence, and which is not supported even by any of the eight US intelligence agencies. But, apart from that, all the evidence - virological, molecular, and epidemiological - favour the origin of SARS-CoV-2 at the Huanan Wholesale Seafood Market.

@@wednesdayschild3627 "I have a theory though... I think that..." Who cares what you think and what your theory-without-proof is? From what you just said, it is clear you don't even know what a scientific theory is! This is a channel for those interested in what the majority of scientists with recognised expertise in the relevant fields of science have concluded, not what some random internet rookie thinks.

@@williamverhoef4349This person deserves their theory. They just went through a world wide pandemic and are curious, clearly. I am a scientist and have worked in BSL 3 labs. Yes, SARS 1 was of natural origin and we found the intermediate species rather swiftly... but there were at least three lab leaks of SARS 1 during the 2000's. Frankly, we don't have much evidence of either. My advice to those seeking more knowledge and facts? Be curious! Search out research papers! And if there is not a firm scientific conclusion... keep your mind open for all possible options. 🔬
