I _do_ actually use tea leaves, as standard. Your normal tea bag has really finely chopped leaves which make great base texture; glue it down and seal it, and it's as good as fine sand. And one bag, ripped open and left to dry, gives you enough material to cover _loads_ of bases. I'm currently using them on Termagant bases for a kind of "razed earth" texture.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are so many different uses of textures and types of teas that make it wonderful as a basing material for all sorts of purposes.

@@VinceVenturella The original comment is close to what train modelers use. They use the same PVA and water mixture, but first they use a thing called wet water which is 50/50 Water and alcohol. By using this first it breaks the surface tension so you don't pickup rocks and whatnot when put on the glue. Also speeds up the drying time a lot.

I want to recommend vallejo (correction edit: AK Interactive) neutral textures. I was contemplating a lot which texture base colors to get (Do i need simple dirt? Do I need mars colored earth? Do I need deserts???) and then found the neutrals. It's texture paste in white, so you can easily mix in any browns or reds or yellows you want and get a whole range of basing texture colors.

@@VinceVenturella I realized I made a mistake after looking at your video. I have AK Interactive, not Vallejo. You got the Grey Pumice there, which looks more stone like, which is also great, but the ones I'm talking about are basically stirland mud and battlemire, but colorless. Rough terrain and Earth. ak-interactive.com/product/neutral-texture-for-rough-terrain-250ml-base-product/ ak-interactive.com/product/terrains-neutral-texture-for-earth-250ml-base-product/ The great thing is that you can just mix the colors in before even applying it and also depending on how much water you use, you can get more muddy effect or not.

It was pretty simple honestly, just a bunch of wet blending with ivory, browns and whites, then some stippling over the top. The key with stones and items like that is to create a direction to the lighting for visual interest and just be fairly random. I honestly just slap paint, stippling, glazing, washing, stippling again until it looks how I want it to look.

Very cool! I struggle with contrast on minis in general but I can never seem to be able to match the contrast between the mini and the base. The suggestion about going higher with the bright green makes a ton of sense and darkens out the other parts of the base. Thank you for sharing. One question though: won’t adding the dry pigments take away some of the contrast? Thanks again for posting.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it will, that's why you want to be careful with it. It adds contrast of color (hue) and that can often be just as important as contrast of value.

@VinceVenturella

It's tough, if we're talking about moss, then just PVA glue and some green sprinkle ground cover (like for train boards). If you're talking the mushrooms, that's tougher, as I'm not sure how I would recreate those, but I believe that you can buy them in pre-fabricated packs.

I am using this for some Lizardmen basing, but I've ran into a problem.. the primer flakes off the plastic aquarium plants I bought.. since they're not rigid, any minor force, even a strong breath, will cause them to bend and crack. What do you recommend, please? Could I get away with simply washing them? Or paint them without priming? These will be handled so I can't get away with just locking them in a display cabinet for the rest of time :(

Interesting, you may just want to try a wash and drybrush, or varnish them straight, then apply the wash and drybrush.

Amazing bases, Vince. Thanks for sharing. Can I ask how you stuck your models to these bases? I want to do them but worry that the models will sort of just sit on top of all the texture and look odd, as apposed to being bedded into it as if it belongs (if that makes sense?)

Just good old fashioned super glue, but pins for larger models.

So after finishing the bases what glue do you use to attach the minis? I’ve had issues with my super glue frosting
@VinceVenturella

Loctite Ultra Control Gel Superglue. You sometimes get a little frosting, but I just go back and touch it up with some darker paint or pigment at the end.

Thanks for the great video. I'm trying to come up with a building scheme for Slaves to Darkness mountain-icy bases. Any tips or ideas on how you would do it?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Well, if you look at my realistic snow basing (I think it's like 91 or 92), you will see a mountainous scheme I did for an army. It's a matter of some verticality changes, lots of different sizes of rock grit, and working other colors into the rocks. Hope that helps and that video gives you some ideas.

What was that box of bits with the rocks and downed pillars? Also where did you find the awesome fence piece with the skulls? I’ve looked in your transcript and watched this video 3 time I can’t hear good so I must be missing it.

Fence piece is from the original warcry terrain. Rocks and pillars were resin pieces from Gamers Grass.

Hi, really enjoyed your tutorial. Like the idea of highlighting the leaves around the edges. I'm going to have to go back to some of mine and highlight them as they would look sooo much better. Question: where do you get your artificial plants from for your bases as the leavy ones look really good ? Cheers, Rick the Bulldog

Is the Gel Locktight glue a superglue or replacement for standard superglue? Asking because I am hoping to find a new superglue that is better than my current one (Warcradle, not a big fan of it). Is there a superglue that is as much better than the compeition as the Tamaya Extra Thin is over other plastic glues?

Yep, it's a superglue, it's wonderful.

Been looking at these videos for some ideas and inspiration for my T'au jungle theme army. But how would you go about basing these with 28mm troop bases Vince? I've made a few test pieces, but it feels like if I put any plants on they will cover the model up, does it matter if it covers a troop? Or is it a better idea to just implement a tuft and some moss around the base as "plant life"? Thanks again for all the great content!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
So the small base I was working on was a 32mm base for a single character of the size you are describing. Wht I tend to do on the small bases is have less plants, You can cover a foot or something like that and that is fine, it can feel cool. I would avoid covering any more than the lower legs. When the larger bases are mixed in, the feeling will still come across when they have more plants and biger pieces.

I'm hoping to follow this tutorial for a new army I'm painting up, but I don't have an airbrush. Is it possible to prime this base as you do via brush or maybe rattle can? How would you go about a similar priming approach with a brush?
@VinceVenturella

Sure, you could do all this with just drybrushing, heavy dry brushing and stippling for a good effect. :)

Hey Vince, I'm planning on using your "paint/shade your tufts" advice. However, I'm gonna use my alien gamer grass that looks exotic. I'm afraid if I paint them they'll lose their weird looks. They're blue, or pink and neon purple. What kinda wash should I use?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
I answered in the other comment, but you can either use some of that color shade (for example, some blue wash) or mix some of that into the darker color like Agrax and apply to the heart of the tufts and the ground around it.

How durable are tufts and the like, for gaming bases. Always afraid to use them due to concerns of them pulling off over time.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, quite durable. Once they are attached, they are going to pretty much be there forever, I don't know that I have ever had one come off.

I have another question. I bought a tuft meadow set, which has 4 types of grass colors for a beautiful look. If I use wash, won't it make them all look the same? I don't want it to look like I just dropped them off the paper onto the base either. Should I use all different washes or what should I do?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you can mix some different washes, they will still very much feel different (for example if you have pale white tufts versus bright green, some weak agrax earthshade isn't going to change them dramatically, it's just going to draw them together). If you have very alien colors, like the pink/blue you can still use the darker shades and draw them into the earth, but you can also just combine them with some darker shades of that color (for example, using dark blue wash and getting some of that on the ground around), the key isn't just the tufts, but the ground around it to tie them together.

Vince at 13:30 you 're saying you found these particular plants from an aquarium scenery or somethin but can't remember where. Thing is, all the companies I 've searched with similar sizes and shape which is the perfect one for jungles are really really REALLY expensive. Like 6euros for 9 of these or somethin and for somebody like me with a huge Seraphon collection just doesn't worth it. Any chance you could recall where were they from or something similar with this particular shape ? Thanks again for the super interesting content you create for us ( not just hobby cheating series, but discussing about the meta and so on )

So I found them in some bags at a big rummage sale with other fish tank stuff, so I doubt you'll be able to source them the same. :) - That being said, that does seem high priced, it might be worth just hitting a local pet store and seeing what they have.
