Lumineth. Every time I play them I see the beginning scene from the first Lord of the Rings movie where the Orcs are attacking on the slopes of Mt. Doom. The Elves fire these perfect volleys, all in unison, while the front line starts slicing all in unison - no emotion, just methodical efficiency. Something very cool about it.

Got sold on Gitz from an old world lore video, talking about the battle of Eight Peak, where they fought the Skaven in a war so bloody, that the amount of casualties would have driven almost all other races to the brink of, or into extinction. Just the total insanity of being able to keep that up without loosing their will or capability to fight, coupled with their strange society based around mushroom and squigs. Have such a large numerical advantage against most other factions, and still not being able to dominate the world, that is just adorable. Yes yes, Skaven are similar in many aspects, but their backstabbing and scheming just isn't as fun

Great show! I rate lore much higher than rules as I get to play few games a year. And it's the lore which keeps the vibes going! Keep it up :)

As a pasty British person the lore is such a deciding factor for me, although I mostly just get the highlights of it from 2+ Tough and listen an audiobook here and there. The models has to be the most important thing though, otherwise I'd definitely be a FEC player by now.

Sylvaneth, my only real AoS army these past three years. I follow the HeyWoah school of Warhammer monogamy.

I’ve always loved Wood Elves. It started as a child, stayed with me when I was away from Warhammer for 15 years, and continued after coming back to it with AoS. I played the Wanderers allegiance, then Firestorm Living City and finally Cities of Sigmar Living City, always with as many Wanderers as possible. But after losing their own allegiance they lost a lot of their flavour. I slowly lost what I loved most and I can say, it’s heartbreaking. I feel kind of lost in AoS now, I tried Lumineth and Sylvaneth, but it’s not the same. And while converting and painting or using Wood Elf models as proxies is a way, it’s just not the same when you know the army does not exist anymore and GW has no intention to support it. The new Cities book doesn’t even mention why they are gone from the Living City. It’s if they’ve never been there. Now I’m trying to find a new army/faction to love and really identify myself with, but it’s difficult and it’s actually in the way of me loving the whole game as much as before. Not sure how to find the new one, that I truly love and identify myself with.

This is the issue Bretonnian and Tomb King players lived through, and that the old Dwarf, High Elf, Dark Elf, and Wood Elf players are dealing with right now. It is heartbreaking, to slowly see the faction you’ve loved and collected over the years be shelved by the company. I hope their presence in Old World gives Wood Elf players a resurgence and shows GW that they are valuable and worthwhile to port over.

I feel like rules probably has a greater role in making you love an army the earlier you are in the hobby and then deminishes over time as you get more into an army. Then you go through rules changes but you're already invested in the army and so it doesn't matter so much.

I’m not surprised how much the lore matters to a lot of people. The lore is what sells the game, the setting is why so many people connect with the universe, models, Game etc. There’s a reason that gw is the biggest game, and those that are even on the same page as Warhammer are things like Legion, MCP that have strong established IP behind them.

52:12 Lumineth Realm-Lords (followed closely by SCE, KO and KB). I think rules have more weight on how much you love an army than most people think. My 3 criteria is (from most important to least) rules, models, rules (including play style), and the longer I’m in the hobby, the more I realise that you’ll always love an army with 2/3 things at any one point, but the rules can really affect your enjoyment of the army, play style as well, if you don’t like how the army currently plays, or if it doesn’t play how you think it should, or the rules get in the way of your gameplay experience, it really weighs you down and sometimes you might even put the army down for a while, because the relationship between player and faction is strained.

I’ll always have two big faction loves in the Warhammer sphere. Undead…in its classic form of shambling hordes and vampires, necromancers and ghosts and everything associated. Since the original heroquest my favourite quests were always the Witch Lord quests, Evil Dead 3, Armies of Darkness, was a huge inspiration…as was bed knobs and broomsticks! The other is the classic Chaos Warrior. In all it’s variants since the early 80’s, the Superb Heroquest minis, all the way up to now. The dark, fallen human clad in thick, heavy plate armour is such an iconic image of Warhammer. There is a piece of art in the Advanced Heroquest rule book of a chaos warrior carving his way through some men at arms that is just such a perfect image. For me, lore is so important as it adds immersion to the games, even bare bones background helps ground your miniatures in the world they fight and adventure in. I’m all about the cinematic vibe from the games I play so imagery of environments and world building is so important. And miniatures are what make us ‘believe’ the game playing experience so are so important in their appearance and how much we love them. Even if only to identify what they are on the battlefield. Rules…not important to me at all regarding aspects specific to my army. As long as the game players enjoy the experience the rule set is immaterial for me.

I've gotta agree with Tom on the nostalgia thing. I said in chat my favorite army was Wood Elves - and that's 100% because it was the army I fell in love with in early 2000's when my friends and I were trying to get into warhammer.

Gitz for me. I got my first Night Goblins as a 10 year old in 1992, so I guess nostalgia is a thing. But it is also the lore - shrooms, tenuous grip on anything considered sanity, and a curious mix of whimsy and outright horror. And the new sculpts are just beautiful to paint and have over the last few years spent many happy hours at the desk with them. Yet to win a game with them, so can’t be the rules!

Only partway through but some immediate thoughts on the Big Three: I think these may have captured more if they were : 1) play experience, 2) aesthetics, 3) thematics. My favourite army is Beasts of Chaos, and they have largely had 1) terrible rules, 2) old bad models, 3) almost no lore (in age of Sigmar. So why are they my favourite? Because I loved the broad aesthetic, and the interplay between the narrative and ludic elements of the army. I love the theme of the army. I love the blend of Johnny/Timmy play style and how it represents the theme on the table. I suspect you defined your big 3 so narrowly for a reason, in order to pick out these other factors. Looking forward to finding out as I continue the episode.

I don't know that this fits in any of your boxes, but humor is another big one for me. 40k Orks are hilarious, and while AoS Orruks didn't inherit quite that much character, I couldn't help putting some of that in when I made my IJ/Big Waaagh models. Along similar lines, while they aren't necessarily my cup of tea mechanically, Gitz basically took that zany character and distilled it down as the core of the army, so I've been trying to figure out a Jaws of Mork list that will play a bit more bruiser-y while retaining the hilarity.

As to DEEP CUTS, my favorite was in an episode of How I Met Your Mother, when they reference a soliloquy from the Amadeus movie, but instead of someone appreciating the incredible subtlety and perfection of a piece of Mozart music, he’s describing biting into a hamburger. - I love deep cut references.

Rules: 2 (rules have to be Kool) Models: 4 (models have to be an aesthetic id like) Lore: 3 (Good overall lore) Playstyle: 5 (This is the most important) Range: 5 (would never play an army that has a shit ton of models or no models. Needs to be in the middle for me.) Paint: 1 (I see all painting as the same. Painting a Gargant is the same as painting 100 zombies) Variety: 4 (way more fun to have more lists) Kitbash: 4 (making my own is awesome)

I’ll faithfully await the return of the Druchii until my last breath 💜 I still remember waking into the local GW store as an early teenager, playing a little skirmish on their table with lizardmen, and seeing the purple/blue Dark Elves book with Malekith up on the wall of army books and immediately falling in love. I looked at it for what felt like years before I saved enough pocket money to buy it, and I’ve worn the page edges smooth with the constant flicking through it over many years. One day I’ll even start and complete a proper square base army just to do my vision and first love justice. That’s the dream

I think for anyone artistic like myself, definitely the models & theme of the army is likely the number one factor! I think another point to add that I imagine is a decider for quite a few is the 'Power level' or competitiveness of the army. With many video & board games often people just want to play the most dominant army or 'best' character 😉

My answers: Rules - 3. Honestly, I would probably rate this lower, but the new Cities release really showed me how much the rules mean to me. They went from my favorite army to one I am halfway considering selling. I loved cities because of the coalition rules, and because I could bring the same units and change the city and get a different playstyle. All my other armies the rules matter to me a lot less, but when an army goes from my favorite army to my least favorite just because of the rules... Models - 4. I have bought models that have terrible rules (looking at you stardrakes), but I have also bought models that I'm not a huge fan of the look of. I don't really want to field liberators, but I still have 10 of them because sometimes I just need to field them due to points/battleline. Lore - 1. Can I make this a 0? Once you get past the elevator pitch, I couldn't care less. I care about MY dudes. Who cares about what garbage lore GW wrote. Play Experience & NPE - 4. A good play experience will not really sell me on an army. A bad play experience will burn me on an army. I am here to have a fun game with my opponent and not win because of gotcha's. I will play "mean" armies at more competitive play, but if I am just bringing out an army for the evening, I want to make sure everyone has fun. Size of Model range - 1. I am going to get the models I like, and I don't care how large the model range is. Paintability - 2. If I dislike how paintable an army is... I ignore the details. I do try to paint to my best level most of the time, but I'm not going to stress myself about it. Variability of Lists - 5. This is the most important thing for me. I don't like playing the exact same thing every time I field a list. This is also why Cities was my favorite army until they dropped their new book, as variability went from very high to a shadow of what it used to be. Kitbashing and Convertability - 1. I will occasionally do some kitbashes or some conversions, but I don't feel any need to do so.

Great response and I agree with most of these. I especially hear you on the lore. I also want my own guys. I think that is part of why I dislike how options are becoming less and less with units and characters. No converting your guys to have interesting loadouts, but I guess I also get why they're trying to make things simple for new players. 40K is the worst offender on this.

Asthetics vs Rules is something i have faced recently......I never thought the day would happen where i prefer daemons over the mortals in both Khorne and Tzeentch and yet after playing as them i realized just how much that is actually how i want the army to "feel" - Despite loving the models i'm considering selling the mortals off.

I think Inwould ven nudge rules up to a 3. Here's why: the rules need to. Feel like the army for me. Once they successfully translate the essence of an army into rules concepts it's more or less there forever. Nurgle is extremely durable. Is it a 5+ ward? Is it -1 to wound? Something else? Well we have both and they work and feel like nurgle. If those core rules concepts that emerge from the lore align to your play style then that's a big win.

Thanks y'all loved this episode, but while I was listening for the 5th time (need something to listen to while I exercise), I realized two things. 1) The lore actually matters to me wayyyy more than I realized. Originally thought I was a 3 in the lore same as Vince but I was disillusioned/pissed off by the lizardmen rework (personally hate the idea of space lizards imo) that I realized my dinos on dinos weren't being worked on bc I lost interest in the army for my other WHFB army orges (which also had a rework in the lore but I feel more acceptable, brain is weird). 2) Affordability plays a huge part in the armies I love and play. Ogres and FEC have/had incredible Start Collecting boxes that with two or three of them you would have a decent size army at least 1.5k and that piqued my interest to learn more about those armies getting me invested. (might just be me thing, but thanks to Tom talking about how affordable FEC was I now own 2.5k pt army and loved them lol) Appreciate the episode once again, can't wait for BIG PIG at NOVA and if not WE RIOT!!!!

17:30 - I think some casters can role 3D6 for their casting role and keep all the dice. So they could have 2 6s and a 1, but because they haven’t used a primal dice it isn’t automatically cast, so a player could use one to auto cast the spell and role the 1 so you end up with two of each. Sylvaneth / wanderer from the start, gutted wanderer’s have died in the mortal realms

I think you’re over-engineering the Enrapturess point. The FAQ flows from the distinction “If you CHOOSE to use an ability to reroll….” in the Primal Magic ability. This is subtle, and I’m impressed if they thought of this in advance. It doesn’t detract from the wider point that forced rerolls of successful rolls are a nightmare rules-wise (and how this interacts with modifiers) that should never have made the jump into version 3. 😊

My favorite armies are Soulblight, Gitz and Seraphon. The themes of those three armies tug at three very different themes that tickle my interest. The fantasy of soulblight being an undead master of magic and martial prowess commanding hordes of undead because he’s too good for you is super cool. The Gitz are meme lords that are kinda terrifying if they decide to stop being morons for five seconds. The Seraphon are big stompy dinosaurs with a sweet Aztec/Incan/Mayan aesthetic. Rules to me really don’t matter to me at all. The army that got me into this game was Gitz in second edition which were not very good when I first got them and got worse as time went on. For painting I think that’s a HUGE factor for me. I give that a 5 personally. I’ve wanted to play S2D for so long, but I played DG in 40K and have PTSD from painting trim. Cities and S2D for me are two armies I will never play because of ease of painting

Soulblight has been my favorite army since they separated them from "Not Really Grand Alliance Death" (Legions of Nagash). It is no coincidence that they updated Zombies (my favorite Magic tribe and it isn't close), Direwolves, and created the werewolf aesthetic Vyrkos dynasty and them becoming my favorite army. I even just stopped thinking about how I might approach a custom dynasty and am fully in on Vyrkos. It didn't change the specific lore of my own personal army, but it did absolutely change from where my vampires descend. Gorslav is one of my all-time favorite miniatures and Chadukar, Belladamma Volga, and Ivya Volga are stunning. As for how I rate the various aspects of loving an army, my rating is as follows: Rules - 2 (the rules can't be completely opposite to what everything else says an army is, but that is my only criteria), Models - 5 (if I don't like the look of the models, it won't matter if the rules are awesome and the lore is incredible; I love zombies, but the prior incarnation of them was terrible, as an example), Lore - 4 (Same as with the models; if I think the lore is dumb, no amount of cool rules or models will make me like an army), PE & NPE - 3 (If an army doesn't play enough like it is supposed to according to lore, or if it has too high of a mental tax, I am probably out), Size of Range - 1 (I just don't care if the range has a few kits or a ton; I chose Undead when I got into WHFB in 4th ed before they had a book or a huge range), Painting - 3 (I want the regular troops to be easy to assemble and paint with center pieces that are interesting to work on that I can go deep on if I choose), Kitbashing -1 (it mattered to me when I was much younger, but now I don't care).

My favourite army is Dark Elves. And I would say my rating for the big 3 is Rules: 2, Models: 5, Lore: 4. For the rest its Play experience: 2, Painting: 3, Listvariability: 2, Convertability: 1. Right now in AoS I can't really play Dark Elves because they're not represented in the lore (I refuse to believe my Dark Elves are a part of a city of Sigmar...). It got pretty close with the addition of Har Kuron as a city, but I don't know what's happening with that now. I'm hoping they add Malerion and some attached units in the future, and then soup it all together with DoK and the remaining Dark Elves-models into one army.

Favorite Armies Chaos Dwarfs, just overall favorite Whole vampire asthetic in AoS. I only have the cursed city but maybe at some point getting more of them together. Orkz in 40k, sadly not so fun to play since 9th codex removal of dakka. Making me realize rules also matter. I guess just overall chaos too. I love converting models, it's one of the most fun things about the hobby for me. rules 2, models 5, Lore 4 (foundation for my own stories), Player agenda 5 (can I make my own stories, can I acceptably convert them, how to paint them..) I sometimes toy in my head with the idea of converted FEC army where it's really just a bretonnian army. FEC models are really not for me but the lore idea is cool.

Regarding Lore: I think it depends on how long you've followed a faction for. So, walking into a GW Store, new to AoS, you'll pick up the coolest looking thing and the store manager will tell you why they're awesome in the setting. But seasoned collectors AND gamers, how many times has a story or background inspired a conversion?? Skaven/KO kitbash, FEC knights of whatever, Cities humans with dwarden guns. Re: NPE, i love Tzeentch. Have since the early 2000's, but stopped playing them in 2018/19 when they were effortlessly good. So picked up my firt Nurgle force....now Nurgle are effortlessly good and Tzeentch are near unplayable, but I'm enjoying playing Tzeentch WAY more now than I did then.

I think new models that nail that Paintability intersect of looking good but not being a beast to paint are most of the new Seraphon (kroxigor, aggradons in particular).

This was enjoyable to watch, my favourite army is SCE, and are in a a weird spot for me atm.. My history with the army: I wanted SCE off the day 1 previews, they made me think of Warcraft Stormwind Guard. So I grabbed the starter and added some stuff to it, painted them up in what ended up being Hallowed Knights colours (which funnily enough became my favourite fluff faction). I enjoyed playing them and endured the first year of AoS after release (lot of hate but it didn't kill my fun). Loved the Sacrosanct stuff that added Wizards and stuff to the army and played mostly that in second edition. Present day: SCE still are my favourite, even though I currently do not own/play the army (kept all my books). There is way too many units to choose from, a lot of which do nothing, and my mental health did a number on me so I ended up selling off all the models I had. I still want to play them, but with the unit bloat, and a lot of the models that are my favs are just dead warscrolls.. I am enjoying playing my new Maggotkin army currently. They are not an army I would pick on models alone, but the fluff is cool and it was the #1 fit for me on psychographic profiles for my play style and enjoying playing. I was thinking about picking up a Cities Human army when they arrive, not sure I want to paint them though.. And this video got me thinking that maybe I should just stick with playing my Nurgle until I see what 4.0 does to SCE before buying anything else.. EDIT: spelling.. words are hard..

30:19 this is kind of a nerf in a way, the unit always suffers because of the unit champ, but it is consistent with things in earlier erratas, where is something would cause damage to the wizard, like a miscast, you could instead allocate the wounds to the rest of the unit and not the unit champ, so I think GWs intention was always that units that include wizards are wizards themselves, but excluded the keyword to bypass certain restrictions like in PtG.

You said, that the change in model range can turn people off of factions. That is exactly what happened to me in 40k. I loved Chaos Space Marines when I first started. When I came back they had all those new Chaos Engines. And I hate those, especially the Chaos Chicken. I never touched CSM again. I am one of the very few people, who loves the old Defiler, and one of the fewer who think it is the best 40k Model ever. Which is also factually true. If I ever opened up a Cult, it would be devoted to the old Defiler model.

When I was getting back into this I thought I was going to play 40k. Then I saw the AoS models and decided I liked those more, and were basically picking between DoK and Stormbros. Then I read in that first book about Keiser ven Brecht and knew this was the dude I wanted to tell a story about. And the lore is all Lightnin' strikes and the court lights get dim, supreme competition is about to begin and I was sold. Models is for sure the top reason for me, then a little lore to kick me off and a base style of play.

Also my absolute zero interest in painting tanks at this point in time tipped the scale to AoS over 40k. With how the last edition rules were I feel like I dodged a bullet. :)

I have always leaned into empire/ elves. Purely from wanting to represent Araby, whether it is in WHFB or AOS. If I can jam pack all the goodies I want, then I can make a bunch of cool stuff. I don't care how the army plays, my goal is about showcasing a wide range of unique units. To be fair, I am getting really tired of redesigning my projects, waiting for the right models and seeing what new units come out with new battle tomes etc. Like the wheel, it is a revolving journey my projects take me on.

My only thing is that when you said, what's the first thing you look at when a new army book comes out? That its the rules when talking about the lore weighting. My question is why? Is it not because you already love the army due to its models and lore? And you want the rules to reflect that and be playable so you can play the army you love?

I'm a Darkling Covens player primarily, the coven is always my core of most of my stuff no matter what part of CoS/KO I'm currently bullshitting my way through, if its not an Elf it'll become one. Doesn't have to be a specific Dark Elf, we take all comers here, but we do be Elf. All my SCE are Elfified in some way or another, even if its just a helmet swap. My KO are all Elf in some way or another, Khinerai Skywardens and Reaver Endrinriggers etc. There's gonna be a bunch of Elf looking Fusileers coming up soon. Morathi and her son I completely turn off from, they're their own group over there, not my coven. This does however create this internal worry I have, new CoS book not helping this, that one day Malekith will come out, be all focused around him like DoK/Morathi is and I won't have a natural home for my people anymore. I did recently branch out into Tzeentch, though specifically into the Jade Obelisk guys and shunning almost all Daemons outside a Gaunt Summoner and the Big Chickens when they're summoned in. And even those I'd drop at a snap if Cult Demagogue was even close to comparable to DaemonSpark or there was a subfaction that in any way vibed with the Mortal side of Tzeentch. Kairic Acolytes I completely zone out from, they're not my guys, they're Kairos's. I've had vague thoughts of printing my way around it but they're still NAMED as someone else's guys. I like my cults and that they're MY cult I guess.

I struggle to lock down to an army, after all I haven't played them all (yet...?) My "always" armies will be my WHFB Orcs - they became boring when they got serious and became Iron Jaws. I love my old orcs. Elves - all the elves. DoK, LRL, IDK, Syl, HoS... all the Aelves. ;) What matters to me: Aesthetic - its a hard 5. Its not just the miniatures but also the art. Even if I ignore the official schemes all the time, seeing them is what gets me pumped for the army in the first place. Cost of 2K - the raw $$ cost of getting to 2K matters and is a solid 4. It doesn't have to be a competitive 2k, but 2k. Lore - Deepdive - 1 - GW doesn't care about it IMO, so why should I? Lore - Elevator Pitch - 4 - this sets the tone and theme of the army. Rules - Pure Mechanics - 1 Rules - Thematic Feel - 5. Do the rules reinforce the elevator pitch of the army and how it looks in the models - this matters. WHen you put it on the table do you feel like you are playing the army? On colour schemes - my Nurgle are white, my 40K CSM who are Slaanesh dedicated are green, and my Conquest "orcs" are indeed flesh coloured. My Aelves (DoK, LRL, IDK, the elf bits of Syl) are blue skinned. If I was to do modern AoS Orcs they would be "drow skinned" as in Reaper's Dark Elf Skin Triad - it is how my Riftforged orcs for KoW are painted.

My favorite army has always been gloomspite gitz. Even in Warhammer fantasy I loved the night goblin division of orcs and goblins. It’s not just the wacky antiques (although that’s wonderful) it’s the idea of them living in an underground society with all the bioluminescence and bizarre fungus and creatures they’ve built their society around. -also loved FANTASY dwarves but I don’t think they’re coming back (sigh).

Nice show (again), but I'm not sure the categories are equal across the board. I think almost everyone will say the models are a 5 - but a competitive tournament player is going to rate rules higher than others. Lore only enhances the look of a model, but doesn't drive an army purchase. Cinderfall made a good observation about WF vs AoS lore - I think where AoS falls Lore short is that the Mortal Realms that have been created are so incredibly vast as to be unrelatable. All of the factions that exist could theoretically have a hard time finding each other to fight because these disc world realms are so large. Maybe they'll evolve realms that actually have some meaning behind them, but they haven't really started that so far. Telling your own stories are key. In my Home-brew world, the entire mortal realms are on the shelf, a Mega-gargant is the Lord of Destruction armies, Kragnos is the avatar of the Ruinous Powers that the beast men relate to, and Nagash, Alarielle, et al are only avatars of their god. NPE is simply bad game design. If my small group of friends that play Aos suffer too much NPE, the models will never come off the shelf, so I care about it a lot.

Going through the scorring system. I think I'm with Vince with the rules being a 2. Models is an easy 5, it's why I was even ever remotely interested in the game. If I could give lore a 0 I would because that's how much it influences my favorite army. Someone asked in the chat if they would play an army whos lore they actively hated and I honestly think it has no impact on any of the armies I play. I don't really love the Seraphon lore at all, but dinosaurs riding other dinosaurs are freaking awesome! That's why I love them.

There must be 2 different departments that deal with questions and erratas because it amazes me that they errata the casting rolls of SbG and Skraggrott (etc) to unmodified to counter primal dice, but then don't errata deep thinkers. You could have just changed the text to when this unit attempts to cast a spell WITH A CASTING VALUE OF 9 OR LESS etc etc the rest of the text. Easy. No FAQ needed. We fixed it

re: loving an army due to rules, I find myself having issues when an army has a load of NPE for my opponent. I like a game where both people have fun (discounting bad dice). So it kinda sucks for me when the other player is just miserable half the time due to my rules. (comes from when I started playing MTG with my wife and I played predominantly UW so she didn't want to play). It really sucks since my favorite armies to paint have these issues (in 40k Chaos Knights and Custodes).

1:35:59 i would rate lore for every army as a 2 for me, except for KO! Those books I still love to just sit down and read all about aether gold and how the sky ports are structured, and what the hierarchy in the ships is like. For any other army I couldn’t care less, maybe just need some to get my creativity going. But for me the lore in KO just strikes me completely different! Which is why I didn’t like the latest book, where much of the old lore was just removed because aethergold no longer was in the rules and so needed to be toned down

lore/art 5, models 4, rules 3. All have a part but itll depend what you are doing. I read and paint mostly i dont even play but rules do make a models identity too. For example, disgustingly resilience IS what gives maggotkin their identity on the table, same as the posion mechanic. Also, i think it changes as you go. The initial hook the models is no doubt 5 for example. But for me without the lore and art they are just pretty plasic and i dont care for plastic at all. Great discussion though even if some parts counter another argument. Tom saying rules are 1 though, he's undervaluing them as he states he looks at the allegiance abilities first says its high lol.
