As someone with a brown or tan skin tone I always appreciate videos like this because a lot of painting vids are useful for learning to paint white skin tones but I don't often see darker ones. Videos like this are very useful for newbs like me still learning the hobby lol

Just want to take a moment to thank you this morning Vince for the insane breadth of hobby cheating content. No matter what the painting task is on a given day, even if its something I have painted before, and even if I have already seen your video on the subject a dozen or more times, I look up whatever hobby cheating video/s pertinent to the subject and watch them before I get to work. Sometimes, there ends up being hours 1+ hours of content, and I review it as I work, frequently multiple times to really absorb it. When I think about the sheer amount of time I have spent learning from you, it might honestly be more time than I have ever spent with another teacher, whether it be in the context of k-12 school or my substantial time with the professors I studied the most with in college. Thanks for being one of the greatest teachers in a life time of them, and for the insanely comprehensive FREE online education in miniature painting. It is one of the greatest gifts I can imagine having been given, and the gratitude I feel for it is beyond what I can express.

As Always the perfect balance of straight up good advice mixed with an exacting understanding of the fundamental principals underlying not only the look of the finished product but also the tools used to achieve it. This not only answered my immediate questions about how to achieve the look of dark skin but also illuminated my understanding so as to allow me to wing it myself and know what to expect to the extent that I can really play with the ingredients and be pleasantly surprised by the results. Truly the perfect tutorial. Thank you again Vince.

Fantastic video! As a follow up, maybe a video on making darker skin tones dead like zombies would be neat, as it's not the same decay pattern as for lighter tones and I feel like we never see darker skin tone undead.

06:03 very true. Burnt Umber from the Vallejo Model range is very desaturated and also very oxide (earthy pigment) looking and thus has a more matt finish compared to other colors in the range.

great video. I really enjoy a bit darker skin tone in general, and my favorite model ever has a really dark skin I got from the AP skin set, but seeing the how and why really helps clarify things. also, you should probably show off Larry, with an explanation for how many layers are on there. you can paint things and not lose detail, and you can paint over it again and again.

Wonderful video. I really liked this kind of montage style, where you have the names attached to the colors on your palette. Just a word of caution: Golden Calmium Orange (and other Golden Cadmium [Color] Colors) have real Cadmium in them, which is pretty dangerous to ones health. So I hope, you skip Brush licking at least when you work with these colors. This aside: Another masterclass video. 👏
@petersaczko61922 жыл бұрын
That last step, the orange glaze, the highlight light (commonly a white yellow/orange) is desaturating and removes colour from the fleshtone. The shadows are dark obviously, (typically blue/green). In the middle is the goldilocks zone where the highlight light isnt so brilliant that it removes the colour so this is where the richest values will appear and a magenta PR122 or the orange in this case work wonders to reveal the richest colours of the skin.

Yaaay! Larry's back! 😃 Another really interesting video. I thought that the initial value blocking was way too coarse so it was very instructional to see how these were brought back together with "futzing". Really reassured by your little aside about deciding how much time/effort to invest in a piece and what level of end result to be happy with. It takes a lot of stress out of painting when you realise that you don't have to paint every figure to Golden Demon standard - especially as a noob!

Hi Vince Another great video. Quick question. How would you (or what paints would you use to ) shift the darker skin tones to represent a zombified version of the mini? I can do caucasian zombies pretty well, but other ethnic-based zombies likein The Walking Dead walkers? I have trouble getting it right. Add a bit of Deck tan? Can you help? thx Scott

I remember watching someone else painting dark skin tones and doing it via a picture. Was surprised at how much yellow is actually present. On another note. Do you have a specific formula for varnishing models? Like 3 drops ultra matt to 1 drops of satin varnish? This seems to work for me by Matt varnish isn't the most durable and doesn't protect nearly as well as say gloss varnish.
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
Yep, that’s actually exactly my ratio. :)

The major problem I had since ever, was that I cant do it consistently. I mean I mix a certain colour, paint x number of models and when I need to do that I again, I rarely get the same tone of colour. Not just skin but in general :(
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
It can be a challenge, my best advice is “who cares” - what I mean by that is that slight variation, especially with something like skin is good. With uniforms or armor, that would also be natural, as long as we aren’t talking about big deltas, no one will notice when they’re all together. Now the other option is if you find a combo you like, just mix a large amount of it in a new bottle so you can always reproduce.

Love all your videos Vince, you've been a bottomless pit of info. Any chance you can leave the airbrushing out of the "hobby cheating" series? as much as I'd love an airbrush, living in a flat makes it impossible. My neigbours would hate me, and a vent hanging out of my window my bring dodgy questions!
@VinceVenturella2 жыл бұрын
I will often use an airbrush, if it's the right tool for the job, but I do certainly keep in in mind that not everyone has one. That being said, you don't really ned a vent, a 3' x 3' space, a mask and a booth is all you really need (I don't have any vent and I work in a relatively small room).
