your thrusting changed my life 😘 I'M On PS4 and currently limited to up /down thrust and yaw on left stick but I've found the effect on my not dying a lot is still amazing. thank you. I'll try substituting left /right for yaw and see how I get on also but if it's rubbish I easily roll + up /down thrust. I find boost/full down thrust helps get back behind enemies when they've slipped >600m away and reverse turning on you 😎 - your trick with boost thrusting around asteroids helped me with that. 😯 Also, as the cops often seem to ignore enemy wings, I briefly shoot one wing ship and boost away, just to initiate the interest of the sheriff, and then return to join in once everyone's at it. For those with PS4 controllers I've set 'x + dpad up/down' as subtarget select so I can quickly target the ships power generator and x+dpad left /right as contact select R2+dpad as chaff, missile defence, shield boost etc, coz I'm usually shooting when I need them. R1/L1 throttle with R1+L1 as 50% (you stay in the blue zone) L3 as boost I find My biggest wtf moments are when I stray out of the blue zone on throttle and become a sitting duck, fail to add pips to engines against the more agile enemies or allowing too much distance by not managing either pips or throttle, forgetting I don't have an immortal shield, and that running away until it recharges is smart.
@julianturner694207 жыл бұрын
to engage left and right thrust just click the left stick to enable alt flight and that will replace yaw with left and right thrusters. just click left stick again to enable yaw and return to standard flight controls.
@frowy17 жыл бұрын
Julian Turner mmh interesting. sounds a bit dodgy 😀, but might be the least worst option. I'm also thinking of trying right stick as 'yaw into roll ' with just thrusters on left stick. I'll give it a go and see.

+Richard Frow I don't have elite on ps4 (i dont have a ps4 ~:) (disclaimer I have had every other playstation up until the PS3... and couple of xboxes too :) I really feel for the guys playing elite on consoles.. the lack of buttons disturbs me ;) are there menu rings or something to access all ship systems? I've been looking for a vid or any good info showing how it controls on consoles but can't seem to find any. I have played elite dangerous since beta on pc. (I use an x52 pro HOTAS tho so i kinda have it easy when it comes to binding buttons) thinking of the dual shock i'd set it up something like this (i've no idea how customizable it is) pitch and roll on right analogue. (or left if you're left handed) thrust (all directions) on left analogue. yaw on L1 + R1 power diversion on the dpad FULL thruster control is essential to fly any ship in elite. how many buttons does that leave? not bashing consoles or anything but i just don't see how it all fits on a regular controller? obviously they have made it work somehow but i just can't seem to find the info can somebody pitch in with as bit of info on how you access menus and stuff. (im just interested to know how frontier pulled it off :) my x52 has 23 buttons, three 8-way hat switches (think d-pads) and 7 control axes, (dials and sliders) and a mini mouse controller. I have every single one of them bound to something in Elite. (and there's still some controls left over that I had to bind to the keyboard) guess my advice is do yourself a favour and much pulling of hair and buy a hotas for your ps4 :). (the thrustmaster t-flight hotas is only 50 bucks and is ps4 compatible.) the difference a hotas makes to elite is indescribable until you try it. it's a fantastic game and you deserve to be playing it with a proper flight controller the way it was designed to be played.

I will say this is pretty solid advice. lately ive been using fa-off, trying to learn it and so far so good! Regardless its important (whenever you are a fa-on or fa-off pilot) you use your lateral and vertical thrusters. believe me, it can dictate life or death in some situations, and give you the advantage at times. It's always best to stay behind your target no matter your skill level. And always know when to bail out. I don't care what you call me. If i cant win i will try to run, nine times out of ten I make it out alive anyways. Really good video, Keep them going :)
@Mithguar7 жыл бұрын
speaking of bailing out, when you do bail from the fight, face enemy, put 4 pips to engines and boost passing them. That way they will waste precious seconds to turn around and you might be able to get out of their weapons range. You will also get few extra sec on your FSD charge...

Has anyone else found that, in order to perform a tighter "pitch-up" turn in order to get back on the tail of a ship that's flown past you (or for any other reason), using an alternating combination of up and down thrusters to kind of push your nose up a bit and then your tail down a bit (or at least this is how I picture it) seems more effective than just using the up thruster alone? It's entirely possible that I'm imagining it.
@VindicatorJones7 жыл бұрын
You sir win a cigar.. you are absolutely correct, and this was something I was going to go through in my next video. Basically, if you first use down thruster and pull up hard, then half way through the turn alternate to up thruster, you will actually seem to turn faster towards your target. From what I can figure, you are altering your ships centre of rotation point (in relation to your enemy) further out in front of you, effectively allowing your ship to turn faster back onto your target.
@alecturner077 жыл бұрын
Yay - Go me! Glad to hear it's not just my imagination. It would be really interesting to use the camera suite, get the camera sufficiently far away from the ship so that an entire loop fits within the frame, and then perform three separate loops (side on to the camera) - one without thrusters, one with just up thrusters and one with this alternating application of up and down thrusters. You could then use some kind of long exposure technique (or simply composite together screengrabs from a bunch of different stills) to trace out the different trajectories taken. You'd hopefully see a tighter circle in the latter but you might also see an interesting, non-circular shape that reveals more about what's going on.

Proper use of lateral and vertical thrust is what separates men from the boys, as they say :) I used to be rubbish at it, simply locking into a ww2 fighter in space kind of playstyle. Which it kind of is in ED. However, once use of thrusters becomes second nature to you so many new tactics and possibilities open for you. Ships you could not fly because of their perceived bad maneuverability suddenly become faster and more controllable, and maneuverable ships become ballet dancers defying laws of physics :)

At first I couldn't figure out why I sucked so bad at fighting (coming from stuff like War Thunder in the past, which I was pretty good at). I use the thrusters and have a setting turned on called "yaw into roll." with this setting on, My ship will only turn left and right as opposed to rolling side to side when I move the left thumb stick (I swapped the stick to Left). My ship WILL however, roll as soon as my joystick reaches half-tilt. This stick also raises/decreases my altitude, which means I can not only maintain my tracking by turning my ship, I can also maintain a constant downward thrust. this enables me to set the right stick to look up/down (pitch) AND lateral thrust left/right... like moving side to side in a first person shooter. see where I'm going with this? ;) if you're flying like a jet on the PS-4 version of the game and you encounter someone flying with this control scheme you're toast, just run away. they will literally be able to keep you dead center while flying a lateral/diagonal near perfect circle around you... and you won't be able to hit them unless you fly way out and turn around, or unless you happen to be sitting still to roll. so the problem that I have with your video is that in order to reacquire a target that moves left or right out of your field of view requires you to roll your ship and pitch up or down to reacquire. with the settings set up as I spoke about you will never lose the target. it would be like playing a free floating first person shooter. oh and the ability to hold a steady left turn would help you guys immensely with fuel scooping. you'll thank me later when you realize you can fly a complete circle around a sun without rolling or pitching at all.
@sandylegge32517 жыл бұрын
Hi David, what axis do you have on which thumb stick?
@coloneltungsten7 жыл бұрын
Sandy l I will lay it out for you. On my left stick, vertical thrust and roll. on my right stick, lateral thrust (strafe), and pitch (looking up/down) if you set your "yaw into roll" setting to "on low roll only" your ship won't roll until you have tilted your stick far enough to meet wherever you set your sensitivity too which will be listed under that same setting. I usually play first person shooters on Legacy settings. means I'm used to walking forward and turning on the same thumb stick... my left one. you can easily manually set your settings to swap the sticks to match default fps games if you like. honestly compared to PC they got these control options right on the first go
@legendsofevil7 жыл бұрын
David Stallings interesting. Just curious, how do you set up your flight assist toggle and subsystem cycling? For me I have a hard time using them from the face buttons on my controller, so I have flight assist on my L3 click and subsystem cycle on R3 click.
@coloneltungsten7 жыл бұрын
legendsofevil ah I left my flight assist (FA) settings where it already was (triangle+R1 I believe) and left the d-pad for power distribution. as far as subsystem cycling goes I'm honestly not sure if I'm more comfortable replacing the L3 option to it or setting it to a combo activation like FA. I will admit I tend to mistakenly click in my left thumb stick from time to time when all I'm trying to do is tilt it. Changing my power distribution or targeted subsystem because of that error could, and has XD, proven catastrophic for me in the past. my advice? find a quick and easy combo option for cycling through them that doesn't involve taking whichever thumb you have set to "roll" off of that stick.
@coloneltungsten7 жыл бұрын

There are three type's of thruster's, one of which is one which propel's you forward, another which only work's in witch space only, are those that allow the movement of the entire ship in ahorizonal and or verical motion. Basically move the entire ship, left, right, up, down. YAW is a different thruster which work's in both witch space and supercrusie. It allow's when moving forward or at full stop's to rotate the entire ship to the left or to the right; Not up and down. A player can engineer the Forward thruster's but the horizonal, verical and yaw thruster's are not available to either upgrade or engineer.

clipper and krait are great examples of needing to be good with thrusters to be effective in combat, i can keep 3 beam turrets on most enemy ships over 90% of a fight using a krait, same with top mounts on the clipper, the drift is your friend, use it, exploit it, dont fight it..... and a bit of side thrust throws off plasma from pve ships quite effectivly... i would have ALOT of trouble trying to not use thrusters... i changed my keyboard config swapping the throttle and vertical thrusters now, some fights, its easier to just do passes most of the time... really depends on the ship you are in and what you are fighting what tactics work best, one funny one in the 10 is fa off full reverse after a boost... then when a larger ship closes in, fa on and ram them..... my record doing this is taking down the last ring of shields and 76% of the vettes hull from that.... he had to have boosted at me as i boosted at him... the 10 is slow but..its not weak... and gods its amuing to fly at times..

Thanks for this video. I'm playing on PS4 with controller at the moment and I find it hard for me to do advanced maneuvering in the heat of a battle and I tend to avoid more difficult engagements. But I ordered Hotas 4 joystick and I hope it will help me with that.

Its good to watch and i am learning abit, but im surprised people are not using there thrusters more, i use them alot just for landing and moving round npc's when they get in the way

I've got this on ps4. Would it be worth sacrificing yaw for left and right thrust?

Do you have a video that explains how you've bound your controls? I'm guessing you're using a HOSAS setup and I'm going to be switching to that soon and would like to know how to properly bind my thrusters.

Pilot who's never used a HOTAS and currently uses a controller: What do you think of using thrusters with controllers, especially horizontal thrusters? On the default XB1 configuration, you can press L3 to switch between the right stick left/right controlling yaw and horizontal thrusters, which is useful for parking, but yaw is extremely important for combat, so it feels like controllers are limited to JUST vertical thrust in combat. That certainly does help (I also use it for controlled overshooting in a way you don't--just constantly thrusting down and turning up so I am now directly under them, shooting their flat side rather than in front of them, facing away) but it does lack the nuance of horizontal thrusters (in addition to yaw being a lot more difficult in a two-stick setup versus just turning a real flight stick). Opinion of how much lacking horizontal thrust matters (or whether you WOULD recommend switching to that mode briefly mid-combat) for console players and PC players without dedicated HOTAS budgets/space?

To be completely honest with you, I have no idea about X-Box or PS3/4 controllers. I have seen a few topics on the forums about controller setups, and how some commanders have worked out a good system to use with elite dangerous. For my next video, I will see if I can find anything useful for our new console friends and post a link.

Don't use a hotas for spacecrafts. Spacecrafts have no need for throttles (unlike the submarines-in-space of Elite, which do not qualify as spacecrafts).

Submarines don't use HOTAS either. You're thinking of planes.

Vindicator Jones thank you much man. I just started elite about a week ago and I feel like some or most of the npcs are always tearing me apart. It would be 1 on 1s.I try you vert and lat thruster but I just seems way too slow with FA off. When I have FA on I can't seem to vert or lat thrust quite enough around my targets. Please make Ps4 controller tip vids!!!

I just started the game and using a pimped Vulture. But in dogfighting i'm having HUGE issues with the AI using the 180º & bullrushing... i simply can't counter it effectivly and i end up running around in rings trying to get a good position. No matter what ship the AI uses, they always seem to be able to turn 180º on a coin and blast you in the face.. I've lost countless fights due to not being able to stay on the advantage, and they end up winning because i can't boost my shields but they do.

When you say "thrusters" are you talking about your up/down, left/right or traditional thrust (rear facing thrusters)?

Hi, do you have left/right and up/down thrusters on one thumbstick? I'm using left/right on the left one, and up/down on right stick.

Just curious but your using standard flight controls correct? Also I can’t seem to stay that close like you do to them. Practice? Lastly do you circle faster (I apologize for not using proper terminology) by going up with up thrusters or down thrusters? I can’t seem to tell.

Is the thruster indicator a setting? That sounds very useful to display.

What is your control setup like. Are you pushing like six buttons on your keyboard at a time to be able to thrusters. I found that a steam controllers easier than the keyboard for me

I get down thrust to sharpen your turn, but I don't get the upthrust part. Nor do I really understand what the benefit to using side thrusters over just standard yawing is, quite yet, but...then again, I don't have a damn HOTAS either, so flying with a damn mouse has ensured I don't understand much of anything. Also, when you tried to boost but couldn't. What's the advantage of a boost turn in a tight fight like that? Every time I boost turn I extend like a mother.

Hey! Thanks for the guide! Its awesome! I have a question for you. Do you use HOTAS? If yes, can you please share your bindings? I use thrustmaster t.flight hotas x and i dont really understand where to put horizontal thrusters without holding additional button :( Thank you in advance!

So, I had meant to ask. The Eagle. How maneuverable is it with dogfights. I just started Elite Dangerous and I'm a sucker for space combat so I wanted to know how. I also just got my Eagle
