Yep. I've been practicing orbiting Jameson Memorial. It was actually really hard at first because I'm using a controller. It's much more difficult I think. Also, I've tried to just get out there and start practicing but I keep getting interdicted by multiple Thargoids. I need to practice on just one but I can't even get to a conflict zone without being bombarded first.

Best way to get a good feel and practice orbiting, is to pop asteroids (a.k.a. deep core mining). It helps learn aiming, lead fireing projectiles while on the move, and practice at keeping your nose pointed at the target. Also helps if you avoid using collector limpets, and just bounce them into cargo off the door. Eventually you can even learn to orbit with the assyst off, and boosting around a target while always pointing directly at it.

I will say that this is absolutely the best tutorial for learning cold orbiting. Having said that, I can also say that it is nearly impossible to learn. So far it has been completely frustrating. For example, how does one NOT use pitch and roll? Pitch and roll is a part of the control by mouse. Turning it off on the mouse makes the ship uncontrollable. Does one have to map pitch and roll to keys and then add that to the myriad of keys one is trying to manage? In my experience, one jumps into a threat 5 and the Thargoid is RIGHT THERE, not 3 or 4 kms away. Once one starts shooting with the laser, the Thargoid immediately releases a swarm. So forget the orbit, one is attacked by the swarm and has to deal with that first. This is just a few of the hundreds of unexplained things. I appreciate the tutorial, but it seems to be unrealistic considering what one really runs into.

Well first of all there is always a timer before the thargoid actually shoots and needs to release the swarm. The video doesn't state not to use pitch. And well as for the roll on mouse that is precisely one of the worst settings you can have and is recommended to change on one of ur preferred keys such as A/D or Q/E which is included in the link of the recommended settings. You can see at the start of the video there is an imagine pointing out my key layout and mouse roll is not part of it And normally we don't start cold orbit fights right next to the face we use our speed to boost away and make distance WHILE the thargoid is deploying it's swarm

This is interesting, but as a complete noob to Thargoids, there's a couple of assumptions being made. I didn't see any of the swirly things that seem to be there when I see the Goids - why is that, is it to do with heat? or is it the type of Thargoid? You mentioned reloading which I think mean the Thargoid - how does one spot that? didn't follow the fragility comment :( Of course I have much to learn and I know I am useless at combat, but you have at least given me something to try :)

Yes you're right, this is mainly focused on just cold orbiting and usually before you get into it you need to read some basics on AX combat as a whole. I suggest using the Anti-Xeno Initiative wiki or joining the NEWP/AXIN server. There's some information to cover, too much on youtube to write. :D. Also the fragility comment is basically if you can stay in optimal firing range for longer the more damage you will do in turn making it seem like theyre a lot weaker

Great video! Thank you very much for the tutorial. I have a question here. How can you distinguish goid move vs goid boost? In your video you sometimes follow the moving direction of the goid, but sometimes moves towards the oppsite.

When thargoids boost they usually stop for a second , look at you before doing so. They also make a distinct higher pitched noise when the boost happens. Normally you want to follow the goid but in a way that doesn't collide with their exact path. Because if you go in the same pathing as they do itll end up colliding with you aka orbit decay. Its hard to say what to do, like its not a pattern each situation requires a different input so you need to see it yourself when youre in danger and whats safe to do. But the idea is always the same "what keeps me from getting too close" , "what keeps me in optimal range" , "what keeps me from getting shot". Notice how i sometimes follow it but not too much where i dont let it allign with me and shoot me.

Even if you use a controller use the keyboard as a reference. For example (F) is DOWNWARDS for me. So use whatever is downwards for you.

I have a quick quesiton, I struggled my whole life with Flight Assist off. And I think I know why. In your video, when you move the mouse left and right, it doesn't roll the ship. It just moves it left and right. Is that correct? Because in my case, moving the mouse left/right rolls my ship to one of those directions. I forgot what the defaults were but I guess it is irrelevant now.

Yep that is correct and that is the worst setting possible for all this. Check the recommended settings I linked that should include it too

I keep getting my fingers muddled up with the up/down controls. Do you use your index finger? If so, I noticed you using the d/e key simultaneously, which I also use my index finger for. What's the technique?

I use the middle finger for forwards backwards pointing and ring fingers for left right. Its weird but thats how i adjusted it for myself. Note that the control scheme shown is more of a point of reference rather than "what you should be running". Some people have A and D for left right as it replicates some other games. But overall, however you set it up its going to take a while getting used to because your hand might end up jumping around

@@mariemonroe553 thanks for the reply! Ultimately, we only have three fingers to control the ship. Let me know if anyone here has a use for the pinky and thumb. Either can be used for a boost function, I have opted to use my thumb. You are right, practice is the only way to master this. Regardless, it isn’t at the level of complexity of a guitar or pianist, but the same mechanics are appropriate. Ergonomically, I’m sure there is an optimal technique for manipulating a ship in four axis (up/down, roll [assuming the default yaw is moved to mouse], left/right, and forward/back). I’m with you on middle finger for fwd/back, ring on the left and index on up/down and right movements. The index/pointer finger has double the duties of the other fingers. I suppose my question is around how that fact impacts planning an orbit beforehand, and how to manage the disadvantage those port side thrusters have (accelerating right and rolling CW) when using keyboard/mouse.

I think I've been doing it wrong. I always use "thrusters" for up down, side to side but my forward and back is with "throttle." Am I to understand you don't use throttle in combat but only just thrusters?

No you haven't been doing it wrong, forward and reverse throttle are used to control range. If you look at the overlay Heli uses, W is forward "throttle" which is used to close range to the interceptor and S is reverse "throttle" which is used to increase distance from the interceptor (see from 4:30 where we explain this).

Problem is, in the real fight, swarm just keeps spamming missiles and drains your hull within seconds no matter what you do. So you cant just focus on interceptor like you are doing here. It just doesnt work like that.

@@mariemonroe553 Sorry... I don't think the same that you. Its fine in keyboards, but very much difficult in pads and HOTAS. The keyboard intro pure movements... not parasitism move when you adjust the target with the stick. If you click on 2 keys, you obtain 45⁰ pure movement... and the mouse will be the perfect fine tune for you mainten the target into the sight. Only in PC with adjust extrem in "S" can you obtain something very similar. In console (my case), this not possible. Its very hard. In other case... the cold orbit is fine for not receive damage, but is very slow for my flights/combat style. Thanks for you video, it's 10/10 and fligt safe. 😉👍 o6
