Some family members (*cough* boomers *cough cough*) will put literally everything out there, and then just a single name can doxx not just the vtuber but literally dozens of people at the same time. Being a streamer online doesn't give the audience permission to know everything and everyone in their lives and where they live, were born, etc.

I once sent money to another vtuber through PayPal, noticed it was a different name than the vtuber name, asked them if that name was supposed to be there and suggested using a business account instead to fix it. That is how you handle accidentally seeing someone's real name when you're not supposed to. Bring it to their attention, help them fix the issue and NEVER mention that information to someone else. You take that secret to the grave. I'm also very pleased to know that doxing is also illegal in my country, which means I don't have to worry about that as much

it's technically illegal in most countries, afaik it's just a small enough crime that people rarely bother to deal with it, much like if you go to court for someone stealing 100 bucks, you'll probably lose, because it's too small amount for the courts to bother with generally you'd need other stuff in addition to that, I mean, even major creators doxing don't get real punishments, even though it's a crime just like technically using open wifi spots you're not explicitly allowed to use, is teeeechnically illegal, but nobody cares until they can pile it among a ton of other stuff

As someone that is portuguese, we do not claim these people. This is disgusting, extremely damaging and disrespectful behavior. The social security numbers are pretty easy to get in Portugal all things considered. Schools do need your ID which has the social security number and you need your ID for tests. There is an amount of money known as "family allowance" to help with school supplies and meals, which if you qualify for due to conditions your Social Security number will be necessary. (Although it usually goes to the parents but there are some cases it goes to the student especially the older they are)

about the SSN thing: social security numbers are nowhere near as important or protected in europe as they are in the US, which is probably why they were able to see it on a website for irina's university. you can't really do anything with someone's SSN in europe like stealing their credit card info or stuff like that

You often need to put your student ID onto things, which makes it easy to find, and when your school ID and ssn are the same that means your ssn would be easy to find too.

About social security numbers being public etc. Not sure how it works in Portugal but here in Sweden we have several websites and registries where you can look up people. Kinda like Yellow Pages but all you need is partial information. A name, an address, a phone number, etc. You'll get their full name, their phone numbers, their address, what car they drive, how much income they have, their taxes, and there are plenty of lookup websites that, for as little as $5, sell personal security numbers and all your address history, schools you've been to, etc. In a lot of places around the world this information is not AS private as it is in America.

in regards to ssn being on school website, while its weird to me too, different countries have different laws and view ssn differently. ik that in US its a really big deal bcs of the identity theft. In my country SSN is not kept that hidden, we have it on our IDs and basically you write it everywhere, on every application and even when you pay with cash onto bank account. I think the person who obtained the info - the guy working at the store, should not be kept private, especially considering that they've allegedly done this to other people. The EU takes GDPR incredibly seriously, and this is grounds for a lawsuit and a humungous fine for the store itself.
