The greatest hockey ever played. Hockey had never seen THIS kind of skill and nasty at the same time before this tournament, and hockey hasn't seen it since.

The '90s were peak hockey. I miss that era so much. Nowadays there's a lot of skill in the league but there's none of the physicality.

The Yanks deserved to win this tournament. They were the best team. Richter was the best goalie in the world from 94-96. He stoned Bure on a (rare for the era) penalty shot in the '94 Cup finals, led the Rangers to their first Cup in 55 years (Richter should've won the Conn Smythe...not Leetch), and then won the World Cup of Hockey in '96. As good as Quick is, to this day, I've never seen a better American goaltender than Richter. I feel bad writing this because I loved Lindros but, as good as he was, he always fell just a little bit short. He captained the Flyers to a Cup Final but lost in 4 games. He had a rough World Cup in '96. He did score that tying goal in the final game but he struggled throughout the tournament. I don't agree that the Canadians thought the Americans sucked. That's not the case. In these international tournaments there are ALWAYS three teams Canada is worried about: USA, Russia, Sweden. In any given tourney, these are the teams that give Canada the most trouble. For my money, this was the best Team USA ever. The Miracle on Ice Team was great and they embarrassed the Soviets but they didn't have the big names. '96 Team USA was better than the 2002 Olympics and better than 2010 as well. Like...to think that they played as well as they did WITHOUT Roenick (he missed the tourney because he was in a contract dispute. Rolston took his place). Richter, Hull, Tkachuk, Chelios, Guerin (hugely underrated player), Modano, LeClair, Housley, LaFontaine, Suter.

That Amonte goal was Eruzione like. As a Canadian, it was disappointing to lose this but better things were to come.

The Canadians always seemed to gel quickly as a team once they put on the jersey. Egos put aside and bought into the team concept 100%. Thanks for sharing this

Tkachuk's whack on the side of of Foote after being slashed behind the knees multiple times was no worse than Shanahan's on Leetch and certainly not as bad as Lindros' on the back of Tkachuk's neck.

The officiating in the series was biased toward Canada. I'm Canadian and I saw it. They HAVE to hire neutral refs from countries that aren't competing in the game. Instead, the World Cup hired mostly Canadian refs. It looks bad and it's embarrassing.
