I was trying to make a pack wholly representative of the system and not just the amazing standouts. The reason why Doom for the 3do was so bad in terms of it's resolution was because of how rushed it was. They only gave the developer like 10 weeks to get the project off the ground. It's also the reason why the music for it is also really good. They didn't have time to program a sound driver for the console, so they brought in a band to perform the songs from the game.

As one of the very few people who had a 3DO growing up, I was happy to see this appear in my subs. It isn't an underappreciated system, but there are a few hidden gems in its library. If Vinny ever does a second part, I would recommend Crime Patrol, The Incredible Machine, Gex, Gridders, Jurassic Park, Cannon Fodder, and Trip'd.

It has a fascinating history, Trip Hawkins' semi-hairbrained attempt at reorganizing the whole industry in his favor. But he just couldn't get the third party ecosystem together, so there were no killer apps. I still have nostalgia for it though, warts and all.

Yeah man, it's really cool. The idea that any OEM could develop the console and actually release it with upgrades and such was huge, and would be so positive in today's environment. The lack of good games and high price point definitely killed the system. The system would have been successful if it showed some sort of early success and 1st party and 3rd party developers could have made amazing games. Trip Hawkins has such an amazing history, I agree. Dude could have really been an important figurehead.

The 3do version of The Incredible Machine is great, I'd actually argue that it is better than the pc version. Props to the guys who designed and ported over that version of the game because they did a superb job, even down to the soundtrack. The main issue a lot of people had with 3do killing time at the time was the framerate which can be fixed with emulators due to the fact that we can overclock the virtual hardware to have killing time run smooth. Killing Time is one of those games where the pc and console version are essentially different games. Entirely different levels, models etcetera. I prefer the atmosphere and design of the 3do version though but the pc version plays better. Noticed Vinny also played monster manor which is also one of the better 3do titles (says a whole lot about the 3do huh). The developers of the game designed it with the intent to make sure it has solid performance on the system. If you ever played the game and wondered why the vomiting heads seemed stupidly op sometimes times was because of how they designed their vomit attack, each sprite that can spawn is proportional to the number of enemies left alive on the map (they never capped the projectile). Essentially, the less enemies the more of that stupid vomit shotgun can spawn. It does like what 10-20 damage and it can literally instantly hit you 20 times at point blank range when mostly everything on the map is dead. Guardian War is actually a great game and I used to love the cheesy metal boss music.

Apparently 3DO Doom was as bad of a port as it was because the guy managing it was horrifically incompetent, and seemed to genuinely believe that porting a game was as easy as pushing a button. The end result wasn't even finished which considering that it was developed in just ten weeks isn't exactly a surprise, and the one person responsible for actually coding the port under such harsh conditions outright stated that she only considered the final release "shippable" at best.

Burger Becky is a beast of a programmer. Porting the game in 10 weeks is no small feat. I just can't imagine how good it would have been if she had enough time to do it right. By the way, someone recently released a backport of 3DO Doom to the PC called Phoenix Doom. Definitely worth checking out, it runs at freakin 60 fps!

The actual reason it was so expensive is that most consoles are sold at a loss, with the manufacturer expecting to recoup the cost later through sales of first-party games. Of course, with the 3DO, the manufacturers were not also publishers, so there were no first-party games, so the console had to turn a profit at the point of sale.

The one game that caught my eye the most was Immercenary of all things. After the trade I made it a goal to beat that fuckin game. It took roughly a couple months, and a lot of booze and weed. I kinda like the 3DO. Of all the pre-PS1 CD consoles, it's probably my favorite. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace and Braindead 13 are all pretty good if you are into those sorts of games, Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter II Turbo are really good for their time, and the Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho fighters are fun if you are into weeb stuff. It's obviously pretty rough around the edges, but it has something of a unique flavor without being outright crap. It passes my "Needs at least 10 games worth playing" test so I kept it around.

I had the FZ-1 as a kid. Compared to the CD-I and Jaguar, I was more interested in the 3DO. The selling point for me was watching Full Motion Video during gameplay segments. It was hard to figure out where video games were headed during that time because it seemed like no other consoles were implementing FMV on their consoles and add-ons like the 32X were doing rather poorly. I learned after having a 3DO to wait until consoles came out with games that I truly wanted to play first instead of early-adopting.

don't know if its in the comments, but if you put tetsujin in google translate you get iron man. Not sure if its correct though.
