@brytheguy4515 Жыл бұрын
@@tatuira93 well, if you know the story behind Morrowind's development, you can't entirely blame them. Bethesda was very mismanaged in the late 90s, and it lead to the company being at risk of becoming a shovelware company. Morrowind was their last ditch effort to stay afloat, and everyone was working crazy crunch hours to get it done (iicr one guy wrote every quest for 5-6 different factions, on top of numerous lore books). So if you ever hear talk about how Morrowind "saved" Bethesda, it really did. I imagine with Todd Howard in charge, after going through that, he wants to do everything in his power to prevent the company from ever having to go through crunch like that again.

Oddly anachronistic
@virvewirllos Жыл бұрын
@@brytheguy4515 You don't need to crunch just to have a cohesive design philosophy and a functional level of polish. The circumstances of morrowind's development were dire, but that's not what made the game good and now they have both the time and the budget to not be as constrained as they were with morrowind, yet every game afterwards has become mechanically simpler, more lacking in player agency and devoid of a core narrative despite attempting a bigger scope and taking longer than the last to make . If anything, given what we know about starfield's development ending up rushed on the last couple of years despite how long it spent in development, and needing a team having to patch out almost every aspect of fallout 76 post release (amongst everything else about fallout 76, already coming out after the very lukewarm's reception of 4), their unfocused approach to design is making their employees jobs much more difficult than they need to be with nothing to show for it. They don't need to push their employees to their breaking point during development to deliver bigger games, they need to sit down and map out how to make a good game before starting to make it because the years of putting bandaids on the gapping holes caused by terrible leadership have caught up to them.

Here are some tips for you if you are starting daggerfall from someone with hundreds of hours in the game and multiple playthroughs for the different questlines. 1. if this is your first char, make it easy on yourself and look up an OP character build, usually a magic user or a magic melee user, with some cheesing in the weaknesses and immunities section to make leveling easier. 2. always always always get to the point where you dont have to do anything else for the main quest, there is a part in the beginning that is time sensitive where if you dont do it, the whole game becomes unbeatable. This can get away from you with all the exploring you want to do around that time, meet bresennia then you have no time limit and can explore ad infinium. 3. make unlocking the mages guild, and the spell crafter a priority. That thing will literally carry you through the game, also look up a tutorial on making spells you will be making a couple of them that will be overpowered. 4. always have some form of recall to use when entering a dungeon. This way if you get lost in one of these labyrinthian mazes you can just pop recall and go right to the entrance. 5. mods make this game way better, especially the QoL mods and the console command mod, the console is controversial because people equate it to cheating, but sometimes quests break and you need to fix them, or shit becomes unwinnable and instead of restarting at your last save an hr ago you just want to get out of the dungeon or w.e. 6. pay attention to your status text, if yellow text pops up that says you dont feel well or you feel unwell that means you're poisoned you need to cure it and if you rest for too long you will straight up just die. 7. dont worry about doing the main quest until you are familiar with the game, truth be told the main quest is boring after the first couple run throughs, yes there are branching paths and multiple ending but the dungeons are premade, they are probably some of the best dungeons you will go through because they are designed, but its best to save that for last 8. Houses and boats are expensive, but joining a knightly order will net you a house at the end of the quest chain. 9. daedric artifacts are shitty compared to magically crafted items with soul traps being used. 10. always fast travel to places, traveling on foot is fun and novel but you can run into some major bugs with world loading if you just walk from point a to point b all the time. Falling through the world, etc.
@Kijinn11 ай бұрын
@ 1:28:20 - Traveling One reason why no one played Daggerfall by walking/riding between locations, at the time of its release: The original view distance was so short (maybe ~20-30 meters, i.e. ~65-100 feet) that you would constantly walk past cities without seeing them. Finding the small dungeon entrances that way was almost impossible. That very limited view distance also made real time traveling very bland, since there was barely anything to look at.

Speaking as a Daggerfall fan, I’m not all too surprised that it didn’t click for Vinny. I think it *would* click with a little more time and experience… but therein lies the rub; it feels best to play after/once you have some general experience. It ironically shares that trait with many other CRPGs, both old and new. That being said, mods do go a long way towards improving the flavor and variety of DGU. My favorites are probably Basic Roads and Travel Options, since they actually give the overworld itself some much-needed screen time. Turning land-based fast-travel into a time-accel version really goes a long way in impressing the scope and size of the world on you. It’s a lot more immersive (and not boring!) than just instantaneous fast-travel. Combine it with some of the random event mods like Warm Ashes and you have a surprisingly solid platform for adventure.

I tried playing Daggerfall years ago once and all I remember was that I sucked at combat and I was not used to how _rough_ the game was. Seeing this Unity port and looking at the mods for it, I may give it a second chance sometime in the near future.

1:32:38 if you'll revisit the game in the future, do not try to find dungeons like that Take a quest from a guild and they'll send you to a dungeon, which will show the location of the said dungeon at the map I would recommend taking a quest from a knigtly order. In the Daggefall region it is the knights od the dragon, because: 1) Unlike the Fighter's fuild they will almost every time send you to a dungeon and not to kill some beast of someone's home 2) By joining the knighly order you get free stays at taverns in the region you joined

It's nice to see peeps go out of their way to make Daggerfall playable on more modern PCs, heard the original is a lot harder. I've only played Morrowind and I've enjoyed that a lot, but never bothered with Oblivion and Skyrim since they really never scratched that itch that Morrowind did. Bethesda I feel has really fallen off after Morrowind imo. (thanks Emil)
@iplyrunescape30511 ай бұрын

Old man yells at clouds. It's always different with ES followers: 1) Morrowind enjoyers who berate future titles for dumbing down gameplay aspects, 2) Oblivion enjoyers who denounce Morrowind for its age and say Skyrim is boring (my camp), 3) Skyrim enjoyers who denounce Morrowind for its age and Oblivion for its lack of immersion, 4) ES fans who don't align themselves with any game and see each one as its own entry. I haven't seen any Daggerfall enjoyers so I can't cast judgement on them, but they're probably in the Morrowind camp. I'm a moron for making blatant assumptions and grouping fans together, but it's how I see it really.
@iplyrunescape30511 ай бұрын
@@scrittle Skyrim enjoyers complain about immersion? LMAO. Morrowind is the most immersive of all the modern titles. Skyrim enjoyers can't complain about age when it itself is dated and is just a slightly modified Morrowind build.

I joined the fighters guild last night. That NPC right as you go in told me his master needed help so, I went to help him and he was some evil dude and sent me to a place called Alabane House of Correction..unknown to me ... a HUGE dungeon. After about 3 hours (I like going down every hallway, pulling all the switches, levers.. I would be a boring gamer to watch lol. I found my way out. I went back to Daggerfall and killed that dude in the attic of some house... the quest log asked me if I wanted to go back..so, I did.... there was a whole new HUGE area with teleporting doorways...that took another few hours... this game is awesome!!! Skyrim dungeons are no comparison... Oblivion either..I hope wayward realms is like this...

Old beats new because old games tried to be as fun as possible for sales, whilst new games try to be as profitable as possible. Baldur's Gate 3 and Hi-fi Rush got critical acclaim for catering more to fun than profit, while the newest Modern Warfare was shat on for being a glorified DLC sold at full price with the biggest change being a UI update.

New mods are still coming out that overhaul different aspects of this game. World of Daggerfall, Basic Roads, and Travel Options are three I definitely recommend for the overworld aspect. UI mods, tooltip mods, graphical overhauls, DFU got it! The difference between vanilla and modded is night and day, I highly recommend revisiting daggerfall with some mods.
