If the case is that there are just sentient puppets as normal I think that whatever was going on counts as, like, puppet abuse- like they isolated them from knowledge about the outside world and then just abandoned them? After seeing nothing but Ban Ban Huggy Wuggy slop the past two years, it's nice to see a "mascot-horror" game that doesn't just have a lot of polish, but also has a competent gameplay loop and doesn't shove specific characters into your faces just to promote potential merchandise. Bonus points for being self aware and not trying to take itself seriously with the narrative.

It is taking itself seriously in some aspects. The war the game mentions isn't a joke and has direct effect on other things. It's just that the game doesn't pretend that the puppets are super scary and messed up or make them an entirely different thing from what they appear to be, unlike many other games that make the childhood thing TWISTED.

It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time it still has a nice theme of “optimism vs cynicism” that feels taken really seriously in a good way. Almost like it wants to impart a good message onto it’s likely young audience

oh, I think I get it, so the beginning work order/letter that mentions Gordon being an ass is a set up for him becoming a more outwardly caring person during the game, with those optional nice cut scenes being part of his growth and are necessary parts of getting a better ending. e.g. giving Large Avian her glasses back is a kind gesture and gave Gordon a moment of empathy and caring.

So fun fact: The casting director was actually Brendan Blaber/Jelloapocalypse of "So This is Basically" or "Miles is a Robot" fame. And Arlo was literally just someone the game director just... wanted as the "Atlas" Puppet, and as Jello put it "I went through 1,000 auditions for Ricky, and then I went to John and said I had 15+Arlo and he just wanted Arlo."

@@lukeeichenlaub3183 Even then, it's not really horror. When Freddy gets you, you get stuffed into what's essentially an iron maiden and he lets out a sinister chuckle on his way to your office. Here, you get pushed and the puppets just continue spouting nonsense. It's very similar to Baldy. That one is a Slender clone, but it's too absurd to be taken seriously even in context and doesn't try to be extra scary in the first place.

@@lukeeichenlaub3183 I do want to say that, in terms of this topic, I feel like this is what survival horror as a genre is. Most other games with the label like Amnesia The Dark Descent were mostly just regular adventure games or stealth like in the case of Outlast, or a mixture of both in the case of, again, The Dark Descent. The fact the genre died for long enough that we're resorting to calling them just RE homages reminds me of how when adventure games came back, people called them either walking sims or movie-games. All in all, I'm happy more games like this are being made. It was a pretty big untapped market with a lotta potential for cool games.

The main thing separating this from actual mascot horror is, well, the mascots. Typically they take the spotlight, especially when it comes to merchandise, story, and generally how word of the game spreads online. Here though, at least so far, Ricky is the only prominent puppet character. I’m glad it focuses more on the scenario; really let’s the concept speak for itself.

Puppets aren’t really just a children’s thing. It’s a medium of entertainment. Cartoon reality. Look at the muppets for example. Enjoyed by kids and adults, put into all these different stories, some original and some pre-existing. Or take a look at something a little more out there. Randy feltface is a standup act that’s so convincing people forget they are looking at a puppet. Puppets definitely deserve more respect than they get.

Holy shit, there WAS a puppet in the janitors closet ceiling! my play through I read one of the signs on the wall, they don't even let you inspect or anything like that, basically they seem like set dressing. There was a line in there that was something like "there is something hiding in the ceiling of the janitors closet" so when I saw that grate on the ceiling I fully expected an enemy to come out of it, but even walking under it multiple times nothing ever happened in my personal experience. Then I see Vinny walk under it here and a puppet DID drop out of that grate and I just burst out laughing. I wonder why it never happened to me, lol.

This is one of the first of these games that actually looks fun and was made with that intention, not just vapid puzzles and then an overproduced chase sequence down a linear path, although attacking the puppets seems a bit jank with how they dont have any telegraph that they're going to turn around and grab you.

I don't think it's right to say this game is taking the piss out of anything or "doesn't take itself too seriously". It's silly yes but it's crafted as such with a large level of competence, consistency and genuineness that you'd HAVE to have taken the work required to make it seriously to accomplish that. The way I see it, the puppets act like puppets should, though murdering you. And so far it hasn't dropped that face at all. How is that not taken itself seriously? If anything you could argue the horror of it is that it's making your very death into a joke. Right? You DYING, and god knows how, is turned into a "kid friendly" slapstick laughing matter.

The way these muppets mumble and mutter to themselves even after you've tied them up creeps me out more than almost any horror game in the last 10 years has ever managed to do. @elio7610 nah, had some really fucked pain dreams of witnessing my life up until the accident I got in like I was watching a slide show, sort of? Just weird to explain it, it would 'play' to the point it happened,then darkness and after a time it would replay again. After awhile, no idea how long. The slideshow ended, and I was in darkness. After a while, it felt like I was in the presence of some grand cosmic entity. I never 'saw' this presence, but I could feel it around me, or like I was close to it. I have no idea how, but somehow I came to this realization that life and everything we knew as reality was nothing more than the dreams of this great slumbering thing, and it was starting to awake. Now, obviously, should it awaken, life, reality, and everything we know would end. Couldn't let that happen. I have no idea how, but somehow, I got it to stay asleep. Then I awoke in the ICU I believe. Yeah...shit messed with me years. Honestly had me relooking HP Lovecraft, maybe he saw similar but instead of outright saying it, he wrote stories about his experiences? Idk man

@@nathane5287 The Szymanski brothers (Dave, Ethan, and John) all seem to have the most deliciously unhinged sense of humor between Dusk, This, and their stuff in Dread X, so I imagine they wrote it. Especially since the puppets share some of their dialog as show in the video.

Resident Evil I get, but people keep mentioning bioshock when literally the only similarity is that you have a Wrench and the enemies ramble about stuff (which they also do in RE4). There's no plasmid-style powers or random boss encounters or weird social commentary on capitalism/communism or... The other two ripped off the muppets and mascot concepts so that's more just a shared source of inspiration.
