I cannot let the last extract of Maria Callas go without commenting that, rehearsal or not the final Eb in Violetta's Sempre Libera is not written in the score. It is only interpolated by singers as a nod to historic performance tradition and as a climatic ending to the first act. Many sopranos never attempt to sing this note at all. Disappointing maybe, but not dishonest or incorrect.

If more people realised the performers' disappointment and chagrin if they make the smallest mistake there might be more sympathy shown. No performance ever went without a hitch. Not just the singers, but the orchestral players, the conductors, lighting technicians, scene shifters etc.Literally hundreds. If there was more appreciation of the work involved in a production, maybe then there would be less put downs. It may seem funny to some, but it was very serious to the people mentioned.

Although some comments object to this video, I believe it demonstrates for all of us why the greatest opera singers are so great. Imagine having to sing music that, when you miss even the slightest breath or support or tone or vowel sound, it is noticeable. These are great musicians and this is how we know they are. Also, frankly it is surprising that so many existed for Sutherland. I say her many times and saw Nilsson quite a few and never heard the slightest misstep from either of them. Sutherland certainly was known for the reliability [some people said it contributed to their boredom with her characters] in the roles she performed.
