Rewatching the scene where as a kid Thorfinn *almost* takes out Askeladd in his sleep really hits different after knowing Askeladds backstory.

Also it was pretty clear that Askeladd was awake at that time right from the start when Thorfinn was entering with the Sword. And I still believe that he would have let himself get killed by Thorfinn.

My favorite quote from Askeladd this episode, “Someone must do it. A person, not a hero, and not a god.” It perfectly encapsulates how Askeladd views himself. He recognizes that he’s not a good person, and most likely never will be. Both for his actions and his father’s blood running through his veins. Can’t even look in the mirror without seeing that face. But despite that, still aims for the greater good for his fellow Welsh, because no one else will. Canute said he’d even become a demon for the sake of creating his “paradise.” While Askeladd had already donned that role for most of his life, and just grins and bares it.

The craziest thing about Askeladd is that after all that monologuing about why he hates Vikings so much, he diminishes himself to be just that. It makes that whole unexplainably epic moment where he decides to follow Canute earlier so much more meaningful, and adds to the reveal of him hating the people who he's fought along side this whole time. It's like he was able to shut off his empathy so effectively because he resolved himself to be "a Viking". It's like someone condoning acting terrible because they decided that they already are terrible, but then finding hope in a reason to no longer be terrible-- a king worth following.

Askeladd -- best boy -- finally gets his backstory episode and it's so good! I disagree with the notion that he's a sociopath though. He's very Machiavelian and ruthless, but he certainly doesn't fully lack empathy. He loved his mother, he truly felt Bjorn was a friend despite him being a viking, and has also shown some care for Wales/the Welsh. He also has a very clear hatred of people that enjoy war and doesn't seem to like people that keep slaves much, even though he doesn't let that get in the way of his goals. Askeladd is a complex, morally dark gray character that certainly has a lot of bad qualities, but he's not a full-on sociopath. And, of course, Thorkell is best girl still! Just needs to be mentioned.

Everyone was started off not liking Askeladd but ended up respecting if not liking him. I think for me it was when he and Thorfinn talked about the history of the country, about the Saxons and Romans. I don't know what clicked but ever since I saw the last episode, every second that he's on-screen I more or less have goosebumps, the last episode made him my second favourite character of all time and I just love how every time he's on-screen, his presence takes over and the first season was more or less dedicated to him!

The show tells us that for Thorffin there is the Thor's "way" and then there's the Viking/Askeladd's "way". Askeladd admires the Thor's way but he could never follow it himself due to his circumstances. Thorffin is trying to walk the askeladd "way" with the foundation of Thor's "way". Askeladd is just teaching him that Thorffin is stuck between the two paths and he needs to commit to one. If he wants to follow the askeladd way then he needs to do away with honour. But Askeladd (based on the finale) always wanted Thorffin to follow his father's way i.e Thor's way NOT his (Askeladd's). That's what i got from his character.

One of the things I like about this series is how it mixes the Arthurian legend of Avalon, which is where Arthur is said to be waiting for his return, with the tales of Vinland and seemingly unifies them into the same place, but from different cultures.

Askeladd essentially had the same epiphany that Canute did, at a very young age. Canute realized that there was no point in waiting for an afterlife of paradise if it meant suffering and pointless war in your own life. Askeladd realized that the legendary hero wasn't coming to save their lives, and moreover, there would be no reason for him to return even if he did exist. Both concluded that they'd have to change the world with their own hands. They lost their innocence, but gained cunning and powers of perception.

Besides understanding more about Askeladd's character, what I like to take this episode and what follows until the end of the season is Thorffin actually starting to realize how much of an idiot he really is. After everything he's been through and all the atrocious and crazy stuff he's done, he can't accomplish his main objective. I like to interpret the despair of his screams like that. And that's like the first layer on why Thorfin is that stupid right now. As Askeladd say "Everybody is a slave to something" I really should read the manga, especially if we won't have anime seasons every year...

Askeladd's point is that Thorfinn is an idiot because he is more obsessed on hating him for killing Thors, than actually trying to kill him, and he doesn't even see it. Thorfinn's sole reason for living is to hate Askeladd and deludes himself into believing he wants to take revenge. They are not having duels. Thorfinn is just having a rage fit, pretending to put up a fight, and has his ass handed to him by Askeladd again and again. For me, Askeladd is basically saying 'move on kid, don't be a moron'.

Also to be fair to Thorfinn talking about him being 1st grade level he basically is even tho its been 10 years he started with a 6 year olds knowledge and then pretty much self taught himself the rest of the way Askeladd was 11 and already had a steady job working in a smithy which isnt easy work but definitely Thorfinns honor and losing his cool are his Achilles when it comes to avenging his father

You guys should also react to Osamu Tezuka updated Dororo series as well as Monster which is another old but still good anime show. I think its cool how ya'll are seeing all these different anime series that isn't just within the shounen genre which isn't a bad genre...but you got so much more to anime as a entire medium then just the always popular, mainstream, latest, newest titles out there also when it comes to just only watching one specific genre and noting else, and not exploring what else anime has to offer.

I still dont understand why they keep saying "Askellad lacks empathy", like are you serious? Askellad has shown so many moments of empathy. Just to name a few, he let all of the people on Thors boats go instead of killing them in ep 4, which he could have done. He let the men who betrayed him walk away and even gave the one dude some gold and told him pretty much not to ever be on the battlefield again since he still felt something for them. And now when he didnt kill thorfinn and even gave him a legit life lesson. Saying he doesnt have empthy is pretty short sided imo, but i get not everyone can pick up on things easy on the first watch. Still an amazing reaction and video.

Well I mean, naming killers and sociopaths in Vinland Saga is like... pointless. I get the discussion though and they're not wrong. But dude. Askeladd's father got home holding a person's head. And he has a lot of children with slaves he doesn't even remember. Children growing up in a shtty environment with nothing to go on. And then he drew his sword, about to kill Askeladd's mother. I feel like Askeladd had a lot of motivation to draw off of. I don't think it's about being a sociopath. It's about having the drive to stand your ground. He never said he grew to like them. It's that he got better at keeping a facade and getting along with them. It was all "I made sure to show respect" and "they finally recognized me". I'm pretty sure he was reminded everyday that those people were Vikings. People he despised. It was probably more of a struggle to smile in front of them than to actually kill any of them. He basically destroyed the family of the man who left broken families everywhere, including Askeladd's mother. But that's just how I saw it. Any way you relate to it, I wouldn't say you're wrong.
