Saw an interesting comment about askeladds character. He went from waiting for artorius, to searching for him and at the end he became the hero artorius himself and saved Wales. "lets mourn him for just 2 sec" abi is a savage lmao

Isnt that wrong? He figured as a kid that there is no hero he needs to wait, and prepared to take matters in his own hands (killing his father). There is no development in Askeladd's character, there's just fleshing of it in these 24 episodes

Right, but he had been searching for “artorius” aka a savior before he met canute. This is why he asked thors to lead him in episode 4. He was being dead serious but played it off when he realized nobody was going for that idea. He saw qualities of “artorius” in thors. He saw the same in canute

Askladd's story has ended. Thorfinn's story has just begun. Also, if you are looking for something new to watch on the channel, I would recommend Trigun (1998). It's really a masterpiece but criminally under the radar.

What a fun ride this has been. I was surprised at how much you two ladies ended up enjoying this series all the way through. Where season 1 is widely regarded as Askeladds Saga, season 2 (and onward) can essentially be characterized as Thorfinn's growth. In due time you both will see him as "Zaddy" lmao. Thorfinn is the one and only protagonist of Vinland Saga. There's 4 total planned parts for Vinland Saga's story. The first season is a prologue (Part 1) to show how Thorfinn's early childhood in Iceland & his time with Askeladd's crew will affect his life as an adult in the next 3 parts of the story. Vinland Saga was always planned to be a coming-of-age, adventure drama. Part 1 of the story led many people to believe that this will be a battle anime, so that's why you see some people saying stuff like "season 2 is gonna suck lul". Don't listen to them. Those are just the kind of people who only like stuff like Naruto, DBZ, etc. Season 2 will be amazing just like the first season.

As a story with only 1 protagonist, it's interesting to see how many side characters carry the level of depth that mirrors many shows' main characters. The huntress is another character that feels very full despite not having an incredible amount of screen time.

I love this series, I was hooked from episode 1 when Leif was telling Thorfinn and the others the story of how he found Vinland. I love the music in the series, there are too many tracks to list, but one of my favorites is "Somewhere Else." I love in episode 3 when Thorfinn sneaks aboard his father's ship and he sees the sea for the first time and you hear that music playing in the background. "Father! The Sea!" It was really sad for Thorfinn in episode 5 when he was in the forest, cold, hungry and all alone. Things changed that night when he had to kill that wolf, I love it when he starts to train and he learns how to hunt, to survive. Sadly he loses to Askeladd again and he's told to prove himself on the battlefield and he'll be rewarded with another deul. The way Thorfinn screamed in episode 6 when he took his first life, since then he's killed a lot of people, Thors didn't want any of this for him. I like the scene in episode 8 when Thorfinn is sitting on his father's ship and he sees Thors. I love when Thors places his hand on Thorfinn's head and you see Thorfinn as a wee boy. Thors says "There, there, crybaby caterpillar." It's so sad seeing him as that happy wee boy to now filled with so much rage. I like when Thorfinn is talking to the girl and he says to her "Far to the west... and beyond the sea... is a land called Vinland. It is a warm plentiful place, so far that slave traders and the flames of war cannot reach it. There, no one would pursue you." She asks "Does such a place truly exist?" I thought episode 14 was sad, we meet Anne, it was so sad for her, she watches as her whole village gets slaughtered, everyone she knew and loved, all gone, and even before that she was scared, she was scared that she would go to hell because she stole that ring. She thought she would be the only one in her family who wouldn't go to Heaven when she died. She said "Bad children like me will surely go to Hell on Judgment Day." It's so sad the way she felt, to be raised in fear like that, and now she's left all alone in the world. Later we see her talking to God, looking up into the night sky, it looks like a question mark, which makes sense, people do question if God is real or not. In episode 18 Canute sees Ragnar in his dream and the track "Somewhere Else" is playing in the background, it's sad, but it's a beautiful scene. For a moment Canute thinks Ragnar is still alive, he then realizes it's just a dream. Ragnar tells Canute he has come to say goodbye. Canute asks "Will you leave without me? Are you saying... I must live in this world alone? How am I to continue?" Ragnar tells Canute that he failed him, he asks Canute to forgive him for raising him as his own, Canute asks "How is that wrong?! You gave me more than my own father, the king!" Canute begins to cry, he tells Ragnar "I didn't want to be born into royalty. If only... If only I had been born as your son, things would have been so much better." Canute begs for Ragnar to stay, he tells him he loves him, Ragnar says "There are things you only understand after losing them. You have already realized it. I am only in your dreams. The time has come for you to awaken. Live well, Your Highness." When Canute wakes from his dream he sees Bjorn and the others fighting, the monk Willibald tells Canute "Those men are fighting over who will take possession of you. You have become a prize to be won." Canute asks Willibald "As a monk, can you not stop their fighting?" Willibald says "Is there a way to stop them? If they wish to die, then we should let them." Canute tells Willibald about his dream. Canute: "I had a dream. I dreamt of Ragnar. He was able to say goodbye. He's a sincere man, even in death. The only person who loved me has now departed from this world." Willibald: "That is a great enlightenment. But not entirely true. Was it love that Ragnar felt for you? For your safety, he witnessed the murder of 62 good villagers. Your Highness, what is love?" Canute: "You're asking what love is? Are you saying that Ragnar didn't love me?" Willibald: "Yes." Canute: "Then I have a question for you. If Ragnar didn't love me, then who is the person who properly embodies love?" Willibald: "There's one over there. See? He has died and has become more beautiful than any living being. You can call that true love. He can no longer hate or steal. He will remain abandoned here, and his flesh will provide generously for the beasts and the insects. He'll be exposed to the wind and the rain without uttering a word of complaint. Death... completes the human being." The track "Ahead of the Road" is playing and Canute asks "That's true love? Death?" Willibald: "Yes." Canute: "In that case, what would you call those precious feelings between parents and children, husband and wife, Ragnar and me?" Willibald: "Discrimination. Flattering Kings while whipping slaves is not so different from that. To Ragnar, Your Highness was more precious than anyone else. He perhaps treasured you more than his own life. That fondness which he so expressed for you was discrimination." Canute: "I see. I understand now. It feels like a fog has lifted. I understand. This snow... is love, isn't it?" Willibald: "That's right." Canute: "The sky. The sun. The blowing wind. The trees. The mountains. Yet. It's unbelievable. The world... God's work is so beautiful, and yet... inside the hearts of men... love does not exist?" Willibald: "It is said that the reason we live this way is because our ancestors long ago disobeyed God and by choice committed the original sin. After that, we were banished from paradise." Willibald tells Canute the men are done fighting, that Bjorn may have lost his sanity and he should make his escape. The track "Awaken" begins to play, I love this scene. Canute: "Sanity? Where are the sane people in this world? They're all the same. All the same. All are the same without the knowledge of love. They don't know the meaning of life, the meaning of death, or even the meaning of their fighting." Willibald: "Your Highness..." Canute: "Enough. I am tired of this. Something was lost in exchange for wisdom. A most important thing. That something... we will never attain as long as we live. We will never attain it. But, despite that, we are still asked to pursue it? Father in Heaven!" Canute begins to walk towards Bjorn and says "Miserable warrior, you are the furthest away from love. You were exiled from paradise. To end the suffering of your punishment, is there no other option but to die? Is our only option in life to be tested and to endure? Father in Heaven! By your trials, this man's soul cannot be saved!" Canute then walks over to Bjorn, he reaches out and touches Bjorn on his face, he then holds him and says, "Father, I will no longer seek your salvation. If you will not give it to us, then by our own will we will create another paradise from this land." In episode 21 Leif finally finds Thorfinn. 11 years he's been searching for him, he said "He looks exhausted. For a young boy like him to grow up on the battlefield, means he's undoubtedly been through hell." He has been, to see his father killed, to grieve the loss of him all alone, with no one there to comfort him, to tell him everything's going to be okay. Leif see's it, he says "What a tragic sight. What has that cheerful boy become." This series has a lot of sad moments, just like life itself. That scene at the end of episode 21 with Bjorn and Askeladd. Bjorn asks him "Is it not lonely? Rejecting everyone and everything the way you do?" Then as Bjorn is dying he says "Askeladd, I wanted to be your friend." Askeladd tells him "Yes, Bjorn. You were... my one and only true friend." The track "Somewhere Else" begins to play, I love this series so much. I loved episode 22 when Askeladd tells Thorfinn his story, he's also had a hard life, as far back as he can remember he worked as a blacksmith in the stables, always covered in soot and ash, Askeladd "Covered in Ash" It was sad the way his mother was treated when she became sick, just left abandoned with no one to care for her but her only son. I love the story she would always tell him, the story of Artorius, of how one day he would return to free her from sickness and slavery. It was sad in episode 23 when Thorfinn was arrested, I'm glad Leif came to visit him, he tells Thorfinn he remembers their lives like it was yesterday. "The crackling hearth, the smell of hearty stew, Thors, Helga, Ylva." I love when Leif says to Thorfinn "Far to the west, beyond the sea there is a new land where the fruit is plentiful and waves of green grass ripple across the hills and meadows. This is Vinland Thorfinn, Vinland!" He's tells him that if Thors was still alive he would have wanted to find that place. "A place without slavery and war, where everyone can live in peace in a rich abundant land." Episode 24 was a shock, Thorfinn had spent 11 years of his life trying to avenge his father's death, now with Askeladd gone I don't know what's next for him, he must feel so lost. When Askeladd is dying Thorfinn is screaming at him "You got yourself stabbed in the heart, you moron!" I love what Askeladd says to him, "How do you intend to live? From now into the future, long after I've died, how do you intend to live, Thorfinn? You haven't even thought that far ahead. Stop this nonsense and just move on. Doing this forever... will only keep you stuck in this worthless place. Go far, far away. Go even beyond the land where Thors went, son of Thors. That is your... true fight. Become a true warrior... son of Thors." I want to thank you Imon, without you I would never have found this series, I really love this story. Thank you.

An that is the end of the Prologue. Crazy right? I would suggest reading the manga but we might get a second season so you might want to avoid the manga to avoid season 2 spoilers but man is it a good manga. Askeladd is easily the star of season 1. I'd even go so far as to say he is easily one of the more complex and well written characters in all media (anime, manga, books ect). I know you both are busy but you should rewatch the series on your own and see what you think of various scenes now knowing the full story behind these characters. Specific scenes now with full context REALLY carry more weight behind them. its also CRAZY seeing how much character glow each person goes thru. Look at Canute when we first met him vs the end of the show.
