Decided to leave this comment, just cuz I figured by now someone else would have mentioned it but it seems either no one has or you guys didn't bring it up but Vinland was actually the Norse name for roughly the east coast of Canada. Leif Erikson is considered the first European to discover North America (long before Columbus) and there have been remains of Norse settlements discovered in Canada. Just thought you guys might find it a cool thing to read about.

I think Askeladd sees Thorfinn's potential, both because he knows what Thors was like, and because he sees Thorfinn's skill. It's funny when you think how a person that killed Thorfinn's dad became sort of like a second father figure for Thorfinn, even though none of them 2 would ever admit it. also Carlie was onto something, Askeladd only mentions his ancestor Artorious when he's being serious. when he broke the rules of his duel with Thors, he was swearing on his father, Olaf. but when he promised to Thors that he would let his men go, he swore on Artorius, and he honored that deal.

Some of the characters you will meet in this series are simultaneously real people with real accomplishments in recorded history, and mythical figures with superhuman feats told in the sagas. This show does something interesting and combines both stories so you can see real history combined with the myth made reality

This ep originally came first in the manga, that's why it's kinda wildly different in tone than everything else. I liked that they rearranged it to make thorfinn's childhood first, but it does make for an awkward ep in the anime lol

Remember, Thors said to his son, "You have no enemies". This is what Thorfinn isn't understanding, he's drove with revenge but in the end, will this revenge benefit his life or will Thors be satisfied in the heaven? I don't think so. Thors also said "a true warrior doesn't need a sword" which means someone who is a true warrior does not need bloodshed to be great. Does not need to end the lives of others. There are other ways to be a great warrior, like taking care of your family, building paradise among the society etc sadly, warriors in the show think it's an honour to be in the war, it's normal to them but the show is trying to teach us that they're wrong

Believe me everything you said is true but I feel like a true warrior doesn’t need a sword and the stuff you stated wouldn’t make sense because a warrior is suppose to be a fighter like how a Spartan is just with a name. I feel like the show just made him say that knowing he was going to be a character that’ll kill and really meant it as if I your a warrior it’s fine to throw away the sword no matter the peoples opinions

I have the same feeling about askeladd when I first watch it. You can't read him, everything he said doesn't feel like what he actually meant. He's a super complex character and very interesting, you can easily write an entire essay about him alone lol

As far as history goes these names and events are relevant to our history. The problem is we really only have best guesses as to the specifics of these times. So it leaves a lot of room for embellishments

Vinland Saga should be taken as a viking saga of it's own, given how the main characters can accomplish stupendous feats like in real norse sagas. The history is very real, and some the chief characters really did exist in that period.

I am sure someone else has probably already mentioned this. But Askelad will swear on different people, aspects, or Deities. You may notice him treating certain oaths and names with more deference then others. Not going to mention what each name means to him as it's a fascinating, and subtle insight into what or who may be important to him.

Basically it's based in historical events but it doesn't follow them rigorously. Some events are changed around or invented. But the general setting and historical figures/events are more of less accurate.

So like King Sweyn that you saw talking with Floki is real. So is his son. But people like Askeladd aren't. Also to like the great detail like a small blonde icelandic kid climbing up the side of a norman settlement with two daggers that kills the general has never been reported in history so that specific stuff isn't accurate. Although there's a small chance it happened ahahah. But then like the battle of london bridge is in this and that is completely true. Not the way they show it but it certainly happened.

I work in cruise ships and I made a lot of friend from UK and something that happened most of the time when we arrive to any port in France was that they hate any french, it was hilarious to me 😂, maybe Ange hate the fact that the guy with the big mouth is French. I guess their is a rivalry between France and UK, I never understood that, and never ask to them but it was the same with some french guys I meet in other companies

Honestly Askelod had many ways he could have been less honorable with Thors. If Thors had been willing to kill him he would have and Askelod didn't try to stop that from happening. It's just that once the duel was lost and he had some breathing room he decided ok fuck it I'll take the W if Thors won't.

Your subs are kind of weird. When Askeladd meant "bring me a head" he didn't mean a helmeted head, but one of the leader's heads. Most of the Franks wore helmets so that doesn't make much sense. Also because the anime doesn't make it clear, at this point in the story there have been several duels between Thorfinn and Askeladd.
