I think Askelad made his group from cutting the bridge to waste their time and for Thorkell to catch up to them because he was saying in the past episode that he can tell what a man's thinking just by looking at their faces. So he knows that his group will eventually betray him. That's that and I don't wanna go further because of the possible spoilers that I might say.

I would say Askelad had multiple reasons to do it. Sure, it would waste time and let Thorkell to catch up. Though if his group didn't betray him then the reason he gave is still pretty much valid. So it would be a win-win in Askelad mind.

@@mikkosimonen Well, to me, Askelad always have plans up his sleeves incase one doesn't go the way he wants. He probably was thinking if the danes betrayed him then Thorkell would catch up and murder them all. Giving the prince and the others a chance to escape.

I don't think Askelad was planning on living in that equation. Sure he didn't want to die and was trying to get out. Though you always got to assume you'll probably end up dead if you are trying to buy time for someone else.
