The 2 marks of this genius are: 1. I have heard this track a billion times, and in every single version it is different, the same, original and a new take on an old master, and 2. Dammit - the VERY first chord when he solos - you just KNOW that it is Herbert Jeffrey Hancock. Nobody used chords and inflexion like him. Its been an honour to have him in my life for 50 years so far! And Vinnie just keeps pumping through every change - even with one hand when he loses a stick!! THIS - ladies and gentlemen - IS CLASS!

These guys, right here, are absolute masters of their craft: every last one of them, absolute legends. The amount of years of just the highest level of performance on that stage is immense. That being said, I personally don't find a whole lot of "new" when it comes to jazz fusion as a idiom - almost like it's been explored as much as it can be by these immense talents. As a result, while I still enjoy the occasional performance in this genre, I've found myself gravitating toward the music of Jojo Mayer's band Nerve --which is just a completely different sound and derrives from a completely different space altogether. For me, personally, what Jojo Mayer's band is doing now is what I imagine people listening to Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come" in 1959 must have felt when they heard that album, and I don't make that comparison lightly - *at all* .
