Some say it’s a mess but Vinnie and that bass player are 100% together, flowing through the form. A tight rhythm section can allow a soloist to dance around like that. They wouldn’t often play like this in a studio recording. When you’re live, it’s all good.

@@samferguson230 Ha, another drummer who knows his Shakey! I don't think there are too many of us.... It's blustering inanity all the way, I'm sorry to say. I have been a huge fan of Vinnie, and I still think that if there is a "best drummer in the world", few people could have as good a claim to it as he does. That said, you can't do as much coke and smoke as many ciggies as Vinnie has without it taking a toll. Up til the early 2000s he just kept getting better, more refined, cleaner, groovier, but since then, there has been too much heaviness and bluster (good word). He always had a tendency to overplay, (virtuosos will do that, after all) but I no longer hear any of the subtlety he once had. Someone put up a great observation about Vinnie on a thread somewhere; "What must it be like to be such a great drummer in a musically inconsequential age?". Buddy Rich became a caricature of himself in his later years, perhaps that's what is happening to Vinnie.
@NN-ul4oy Жыл бұрын
@@musopaul5407 This song is made for excesses! Yes, maybe he changed some methods in his style. Just get to the age of Vinnie and see how much power you have left! Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Rayford Griffin, look at them how they lost their power! It is hard to turn old as a drummer when you are doing more then Beatles cover. Vinnie is still there for some reason and enjoying himself. I love it!

Eh, I don't care what anyone else says.... a lot of this just sounds like a jumbled mess; in the "free -flowing" parts, especially Herbie is driving it, and everyone else is supposed to be on his chaotic page. I'm not saying it can't be followed and there is no "one", but it's definitely a bit too jumbled for my liking. I guess you had to be there (and sometimes that is necessary to enjoy jazz like that)
@user-np2td3lg7t2 жыл бұрын
I actually love how raw it is, they really go outside of the box with the rhythm of the changes. It’s easily one of them most creative versions of the tune I’ve ever heard

@@joepool60 Heh, yeah. I play drums, too. I LOVE overplaying, but sometimes even the best are so consumed with what they're doing that they're not " in flow" with the others. It's all good.. love Vinnie.. and it's REALLLY hard to ALWAYS be on.. and even the best aren't always in the mood to play or feel it properly. That style of music, especially when playing with Herbie, is so free flowing, that if you're not feeling it that night and feeling creative, it's just going to come out jumbled. It seemed like Herbie was trying to get his attention a few times and saying ' wooah, slow it down my hyped friend' , but vinnie was off in his own world :-) All good.. Vinnie is top 3 in my book

@@killmoreturtles It's not overplaying, it's an art, a form of musical expression, they are not playing for impressing people like we do/did when we were teens, and like you said, it's maybe not for everybody depending of your mood, I can understand.

@dokproduction98812 жыл бұрын
Untrue.. Dave & Vinnie ARE connected as always. Smiles on their faces prooves they had fun together! As far as the other members of that amazing band. If there was no groove and no connection between them, do you think Herbie Hancock would have hired these musicians? ;)

Since when did you become a better Jazzman than Herbie?
@blacjazzz2 жыл бұрын
Have to agree with you. That tune has an edge to it because there is still space in it when it’s played a little more simply. Love Vinnie but it was too much right off the bat. Build to that complexity then strip it down. With Mike and Paul and many who played it after that, you could still hear feel the pulse cuz there was space. I don’t hear or feel it here
@NN-ul4oy Жыл бұрын
No. No. No. It is not overplayed. It has groove. It has connection. It is interesting when a known song is getting a new version. And what a powerful one! All of them, not only Vinnie, have a blast! And if not in this song, in which song then should Vinnie show what he can? Last time he was allowed to do that was with Zappa. So, stick to the old versions, if that is your taste, but don't tell nonsense about this version.
