It is not completely useless, rats can enter the room that way. Had some of them sitting under the table at one point. But yeah, the monster can't enter the room through the hole.

Reminds me of how they did something similar in The Dark Descent. There's a tip that appears that tells you that monsters will find you easier if your sanity depletes, when that's just plain not true; they put that tip in just to screw with the player and make them scared.

In the normal difficulties, the monster will not come through that hole and the doors're steel. The stalker can't break them down, but in Shell Shocked difficulty, they're replaced with wooden doors and are super breakable. Someone invited me to play another game as I was going to save and quit, and as I reached for the lantern (which takes up a whole fuel container on Shell Shocked to save), I heard and saw the smoke on the left side and the stalker jumped out a literal second later. I couldn't save for ten minutes

2:38 I actually have the modern version of that as an emergency flashlight, instead of pulling a cord there's a button you squeeze, which spins a wheel inside the plastic casing - look up "squeeze flashlight" or "dynamo flashlight." It's still a bit noisy, and it only lasts a couple minutes before you need to charge it again.

Man, this game was a trip and a half. It genuinely terrified me to go out and about, especially the further parts of the map. I'll admit, I did cheese it a couple times by reloading some saves after "scouting ahead."

In old Resident Evil games, that was called an "Exploration Save", where you'd dump off your items to have an empty inventory to figure out what enemies or items you needed later on. I wouldn't call it cheese, it was kinda mandatory given the limited saves.

How can anyone stand to play a game where it's nearly a completely black screen 90% of the time? May as well turn the monitor off and just play by sound. The games that have you set a brightness slider at the start (turn the brightness down until the image disappears) always seem to want it uncomfortably dark. Eye strain isn't my idea of fun so I always have to set it a few notches up.
