This is true, having trained at a Gracie Barra gym, he's very taboo. Especially since I used to use a few of his techniques such as the banana split, lockdown and twists and a variation on the calf crusher. He's always gave credit to the relevant parties. That was a high percentage, textbook 10th planet attack, under which Vinny is a black belt. No one is saying 10th planet invented these moves. Yes, they were invented by wrestlers long ago. We just happened to give them more colorful names and placed emphasis on certain attack chains that translate well into jiu jitsu, yielding high submission rates.

You are correct in that they normally don't posess as good wrestling as NCAA wrestlers. However the main reason they use such a long time to get a takedown is because they are not in a hurry. They are not taking damage standing, so they take their time to maximize their chances of good positioning. I do support that BJJ training should involve more TD/TD defense training though ;) And it will, given time.

People are shouting out 10th Planet cuz I think Vinny's reping the school & used a technique "taught" by Eddie (not invented by). Everybody should be proud of their school and fighters so 10p should be proud of this. But... your comment on the name "ASS RIPPER" is fucken awesome. That name trumps everything! Wicked funny dude!

I realize all these techniques, whether its fighting, or art, etc.. is influenced back and forth for thousands of years and it's still happening. Good to see one more person writing Eddie gives credit. I know he can't possibly say it in every youtube or lesson. The reason some of us are sensitive to it is because martial arts over the decades (especially in film) largely ignored wrestling; but wrestlers knew it was older and used by humans realistically before anything. Very disrespectful.

Buddy, wrestling is an american sport. Long before this sport (wrestling) became what it is today,there existed a martial art which encompassed all aspects of grappling. This martial art is called Jujutsu in Japan and BJJ in Brazil andUSA. Being that Jujutsu, Japan (and Brazil for that matter) has existed for centuries longer than America, logic and reason educate us to come to the realization that the technique in it's original and purest form of combat are originated from it's roots in Jujutsu

I complained that Eddie omitted credit for wrestling moves also, (and others from BJJ), but was told he gives credit, leading me to believe something in the middle is going on. I think Eddie does give credit, but over the million times teaching, sometimes it just gets dropped innocently. SOME teachers on the other hand, stole from wrestlers- I witnessed some! BJJ has great technique and reputation, so they were surprised some wrestling had good finishing use, envied it, and called it theirs.

@natedepigeone8 жыл бұрын
Unless you can do a full splits no problem, which a very low percent of the population can, then you're going to get tapped in that submission. I doubt he's inflexible he just isn't enough to avoid tapping there.
@omghahaxd8 жыл бұрын
idk man anybody can stretch their legs that far it just hurts more for people who are inflexible obviously. I've just never seen anybody tap that quick to one as well as the fact it's a commonly used move in wrestling and I've never seen anyone tap from it in wrestling, and very few people tap to it in BJJ.
@natedepigeone8 жыл бұрын
omghahaxd Well it is a little bit different in wrestling. The positioning is slightly off since in wrestling, the goal is to get their shoulders on the mat, not to stretch their legs the most effectively. I would say a good majority of people aren't flexible enough to withstand the banana split, and if they are, even less are able to handle the crotch ripper, which comes next in that series of techniques.
@omghahaxd8 жыл бұрын

Banana Split.. It looks like he had the right leg hooked and the other leg he locked up with his hands. It was then a matter of arching his back and stretching Daniels groin area. Like a butterfly stretch, but someone is pushing your legs further apart.. Atleast that is what it looks like to me..

Thats true no doubt, if a pure wrestler goes up against a BJJ black belt that is inevitable. But my point is that for both competition and self-defense BJJ practitioners should learn more wrestling/judo so they can go they ground on THEIR terms, not their opponents. In competition: for points; in self-defense: so they don't get KO'ed from being dumped on their head on pavement or wood floors.

First, many shoot-fighting matches were staged. Watch Vale vs. Shamrock. Second, guys like Kerr and Coleman EVENTUALLY lost to other guys that know subs, etc... so? Doesn't mean they were a disgrace. Somebody like Kerr comes in and destroys people; somebody else out of the masses studying them comes along and can beat them. Happens over and over in sports. The ONLY thing worth mentioning in the "who's good/sucks" argument is wrestlers were ignored for decades, which was a huge mistake.
