It's a difficult thing for people to imagine. I've done lots of public speaking, for up to 300 people at a time, and I got a lot of compliments for it. I was terrified when I started out, and I mean physically ill at the point of vomiting, but my audiences didn't know it and all they saw was a confident speaker. It taught me many valuable lessons, one being that if you have absolutely have to do something, no matter how terrified you are, you'll find the necessary courage and get on with it. It's when you start to ponder on the worse things that can happen that things turns south, but if you know you have no choice, as with Bill Hader, you'll summon up that courage and do what needs to be done. That said, my public speaking was a 30 minute presentation to people who had no idea what I was supposed to be saying and didn't know when I messed up, and if I did mess up, I would carry on to the next point and people wouldn't know the difference. All I had to do was present a bunch of information, and be engaging and entertaining along the way. I can't imagine what it's like to deliver a sketch live on TV to millions of people, especially when you absolutely have to be funny and not mess up the other performers. I guess what I'm trying to say is that no matter what your deficiencies are, if you have no other choice but to do something, then you'll do it. I'm not a know-it-all internet asshole btw. There are plenty of topics I would admit I do not have the knowledge or experience to be giving advice on, but public speaking just happens to be my area, and I've always found that when I didn't think about things too much and it was clear I just had to get on with it, I always did. As with many things in life, It's that time to think about the worst things that can happen that is a killer, rather than just getting on with it.
@annkatherine63274 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to a simple fact that he's playing a character and isn't alone on stage. Some time ago I saw that John Mulaney and Seth Meyers have stand-up specials and began wondering why Bill doesn't. And I found my answer here: “Comedian Bill Hader is adept onstage and doing live performances. But he's scared to death of standup. He says he remembers watching Chris Rock's 1996 HBO special, Bring the Pain, and thinking, "I don't know how people do that. I need a character. I need people out there with me." That would explain how he can hide his shyness while doing some crazy shenanigans - by becoming someone else and thinking that the audience's attention is not focused solely on him.
