These games are like Hot Pockets to me. Like sure, they're cheap, objectively lackluster, and you shouldn't make a habit out of them, but when everything around you is in flux and life is kicking your ass, sometimes a Hot Pocket/Le Scary Liminal Backrooms Game is the best grounding tool you can ask for. It helps remind me that I'm still me, and I'll still come out the other side as me, because I can still enjoy a Hot Pocket and I can still laugh at the Skibidi Liminal Man.

People will say that these kinds of games are fast food,sure,but I do truly think they cooked with that snake monster's AI. The fact that it moves faster than you,but slows down juuuust as it's catching up on you,always breathing on your neck for you to make a mistake, seeing it make a straight line for you if you turn back, plus that design...it feels unnerving no matter how many times you actually die. Which is a real achievement,brcause the loss of tension after a player loses one too many times is very common in horror games! The actual death animation could stand to be better tho LMAO

@@jada._marie What? What would that even look like, Isaac is topdown isometric. Liminal spaces is about thresh holds and the space directly before/after it, being able to see past and around said thresh holds kinda removes the tension. It just wouldn't lend itself well to horror, unless you had a lighting system like in Gloomwood or Hot Brass. But that said OP; if you want "creepy spooky space but roguelike", I recommend Golden Light: Meat Song (I think the Meat Song suffix was added after EA release). Its p much exactly what you're describing.

So the Poolrooms section infuriated me so much that I went and did some research to try and figure out what you're actually supposed to do. Apparently, the exit is through that area with the steam jets and the green spiral structure, but each time Vinny got there, there was an impassable gate. I don't actually know for certain how you open it - since I can barely even find any footage of people actually completing this part of the game - but I assume it has something to do with the machine where you insert the keycard, because otherwise, I have absolutely no idea how you get through it. Either way, it was definitely the lowlight of the whole experience, which didn't really win me over in the first place what with its inscrutable game mechanics, instant-kill enemies, and reliance on loud, scary noises and cheap jumpscares instead of a tense atmosphere

To be frank: Having this game's final floor to compare/contrast with made me appreciate "POOLS" even more than I already did. Just goes to show how hard it is to actually do "liminal spaces horror game" right. Also, might just be me, but overall this game felt less like "liminal space exploration" and more like Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion. It honestly has a lot of similarities: Randomly-arranged rooms divided across different themes, several of which are only tangentially connected; various "specimens" of increasing difficulty who get an introductory floor all to themselves, but can reappear later as a secondary threat; the world being fleshed out via pages and SCP-esque lore scattered throughout... list goes on. Heck, my first impression from the thumbnail was that this was going to be a full-fledged version of Specimen 4's spawn area, with one constant, ghostly creature stalking you--makes me kind of wish they could have stuck to the school setting until the end. Those were definitely the best areas, even if they still weren't exactly "liminal" in my opinion. ...But eh, if nothing else... the final floor's main threat is Sea Slug Momo, so I guess the game has that going for it :P

Moments like the hands on the underwater ladder and the general surreality of the areas definitely invoke an uneasy feeling throughout, even if it never comes to the point of an actual entity chasing you (to the game's benefit, mind you). Horror games really don't _need_ to have an antagonist to qualify as such. And while Pools certainly won't be scary to everyone who plays it, I do think it's at least horror adjacent, and the brand of uncanniness it invokes is that much more respectable when it does hit home :)

Very good idea to have a piece of paper on the floor in the first 8 minutes that tells you exactly what the monster is, what it does, what to do, and take absolutely all of the mystery out of it. The whole SCP thing has also been so flanderized, if you want to actually make something scary it's best to avoid those tropes as much as possible. EDIT: There is a big ear man.

To be fair this is basically how SCP: Containment Breach worked. And I mean they're randomly generated and rely on you exploring everything to find them. The only real difference is that SCP works in that in the discovery of how these entities work they become even more terrifying because of the implications of what it could do. That doesn't really happen here.

The thing a lot of people forget about the older SCPs is that they were heavily censored and redacted to give the illusion of mystery and depth. Even back in the old days when it was just SCP 173 on 4Chan, the fact it was given the item number "173" invoked a sense of dread thinking about how there's more of those things out there. The point of SCP, at least the original ones, was that it invited you to try and understand the setting despite the fact understanding the setting was deliberately made impossible. It constructed itself in a way that everyone would come to their own conclusions/use their own imaginations, and that's how it created horror.
