Fun fact: Konpeito is actually the inspiration for star bits in mario galaxy. They're also the candy that the little soot sprites in Spirited Away like. They're pretty much the same stuff as those rock candy sticks, just made bite-sized

Also a Hawaiian resident here. Really glad you got to enjoy a taste of our snacks! I do genuinely think we've got some of the best cuisine in the country. Taro is an acquired taste, as the root by itself honestly tastes like dirt, but put a little sweetening in it and suddenly you've got an exotic flavor. I've grown to love taro, but it's definitely a weird one. The little rice crackers in the hurricane popcorn are called arare, though locally you'll probly hear it referred to as kakimochi instead. They usually do have seaweed on them, as furikake generally has seaweed in it and furikake is a common pairing with kakimochi here. The easiest way to make hurricane popcorn is to put the popcorn and seasoning into a bag, and then shake the shit out of it. I don't know if that's why it's called hurricane popcorn, but it makes sense to me so that's what I'm gonna say is the source of the name (even if I'm wrong). We have a shockingly large coffee industry here, particularly on the Big Island (where the famous Kona coffee comes from). I do honestly think the best coffee I've had has been local coffee here. You got to see firsthand just how good our canned coffee is, and that's not even as good as fresh Kona coffee! Though I would gladly take local canned coffee over Starbucks any day of the week. Hawaiian Sun "juice" is honestly even more sugary than soda is when you get it in the can, but I can't help myself around their passion orange. I try not to drink soda these days, but I still treat myself to some juice every now and then. We get whole flavors of Spam here in Hawaii that they don't sell in most other places. Don't be too upset you couldn't make the spam musubi, a lot of people mess it up, lol. It's basically our equivalent of a 7/11 hot dog, in the sense that it's a cheap meat and starch snack that you can make at home but will often still buy at a store and get indigestion later because of it. Also, I think Spam is best if you cook it like bacon, and let it get extra crispy. Whenever I make the rare trip to get breakfast at Anna Miller's I make sure to ask them to "burn" my Spam so that it's fried to, in my opinion, perfection.

luckily it's pretty easy to make! you just need spam, rice, nori (seaweed) and teriyaki. cook the rice, fry the spam, cover it in the teriyaki, then form it in the spam can and wrap with the nori. lots of recipes for it online

I also live out in Hawai'i and I can concur that there's a tooooon of stuff out here that you'd probably have trouble finding anywhere else. California might be the closest bet, but even then, it's nowhere close to a guarantee. Hell, some of these I've never even heard of before myself! These are more "local business" suggestions than "snack" ones, but if anyone's curious: - Manoa Chocolate (Oahu) has some excellent fancy chocolate, more on the bittersweet/"artisanal" end. - Steve's Akaka Falls Farm (Big Island) is an expensive-but-highly-recommended option for spreadables (jams, butters, honey, etc). - Diamond Bakery (Oahu/All) has a lot of unique cookies and crackers, but even their basic saltines and whatnot are great. EDIT: Oh this place got featured at the end, nice! - Ali'i Kula Lavender and Surfing Goat Dairy (Maui) are beloved local farms that are pretty close to wildfire territory - if anything bad happens this summer, please give 'em your business! - Salty Wahine (Kauai) produces various salt and spice mixes that I've frequently used when cooking! I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting, but here's those off the top of my head. :3
