A knot is missing to avoid electrical accidents when stretching the cable...
@frankdeegan89745 жыл бұрын
I am no expert, I have worked with electricity as a DIY for 55 years. Nice job on the outside, yes a grommet is needed for the pass through for the cord. While it was apart a tip over disconnect should have been added and yes it did not come with one but safety first. The plug looks period correct was there room for an underwriter's knot ? These are things a lot of people fought long and hard to make things safer for everyone.. Thanks

@The Doctor 2099 At 08:49 you can see a grommet in the original cover. He did not remove it but, painted over it as can be seen at 17:41.

I just picked one up almost exactly like that one for free. Luckily mines in way better shape though, and the original cord is almost like brand new. So one of these days I'll probably clean the years of dust out and plug it in. Hopefully it doesn't catch fire!

Great job! I recently acquired a ‘60s-era space heater from my neighbor… it turns on, the coils heat up and the fan turns, but just slowly, and after a few seconds it just stops altogether. I’d really like to restore it but I have no idea what’s wrong with it. I blew compressed air to get rid of the dust but haven’t yet brushed the fan, etc. The connections appear to be solid, so I wonder if there’s a fuse or something I need to check?

i have a 1947 arvin in all original condition, cord paint and everything. I use it on a daily basis and it puts out a good amount of heat, mine has a little red light bulb inside, which is just a standard base light bulb, and when it is on it lights up red. the original cord is in good shape to and does not show any signs of breaking down, one thing is that the old cord is asbestos, so it needs to be dealt with care and disposed of properly when being if replaced.

Beauty, good work. Pretty cool, the one I'm fixin to do is a different brand and shape, but from the thumb I thought, well, it looks like the same era, let's check it out. Exactly the same inside ,lol. Exactly, every screw, same fan blade, same transformer, same coil. Actually, it's the coil I was hoping for info, i.e. how to get it back to perfect shape and flow, as mine has hot spots, very uneven oranginess. And the fan keeps moving forward on the pin, despite the spring clip.(just to spite the clip, i'm sure of it,lol) , sigh...still looking

It's a spot temperature reader - it's showing those coils are over 400 degrees. As far as it working, that's great, but the fact is it's too dangerous to use. I'm probably going to convert it to a stereo in a future video.

For future projects : if you have a high power unit that is not grounded, ground it! With over 2000 watts and a metal body, this thing can easily kill someone if a resistor break and make contacts with the body. Replace the wire with a grounded one and screw the earth anywhere where someone could touch it.

@OneMansJunk5 жыл бұрын
I guess it's a good thing it will never be used as a space heater, then.
@pookatim5 жыл бұрын
Only one issue. You didn't provide a strain relief to the power cord. Note: The old one was knotted inside the case to prevent anyone from accidentally pulling the power cord out of the unit exposing live wires to the case. While knotting the cord isn't optimal either, there are modern clamps that can safely protect the cord. Other than that, well done!

Please put an earth bond on all metal fittings, I know you want to keep it ''Original'' but if your going to use it, then it has to be safe, the ''I wanted to keep it original'' wouldn't help you in a litigation case, or in the event of the death of a loved one!

@rustyaxelrod5 жыл бұрын
For those of you concerned about the safety of the design. Wal-mart will be happy to sell you one with the same basic design only of much inferior materials and less stylish cabinet. Commonly referred to as a “milk house heater”. It did look like this one either didn’t come with a tip-over cut off safety switch or someone removed it. It would have been in the circular hole in the front of the interior structure. That did look like asbestos also, maybe get that out of there too. These are quite safe and quite efficient. Edit, yup someone already mentioned it but that was the wrong cord/plug. It did look cool though. No ground and not even indexed (one blade larger than the other), it can be plugged in so that the case is “hot”. A grommet on the back of the housing would have been good also.
@smjones42385 жыл бұрын
Neither side of the line was attached to the case, I looked. It can not be plugged in so that the case is "hot". I have restored many of these old 'milk house' heaters. If the restoration is true, it is done the way this person did it. The only thing they changed was the paint color. Good Job, true resto. Not a "Restify", then you could have a three prong cord. And a microprocessor/bluetooth yada, yada, if you think you need... Michael in Colorado.
