This battery charger is from the 1950's and I picked it up at an Auto Jumble. I decided to restore it and also fitted new terminals as the old ones were broken. I've ordered a new set of leads for it but they didn't arrive in time for the video. It does work but will probably never be used again and will be put on display. Hope you enjoy the restoration. Very nicely done. Be prepared...when that selenium rectifier decides to give up the ghost the odor it gives off as it smokes is absolutely awful. They rarely break out in flames but they overheat....destroy themselves and stink big time. Lots of solid state rectifier's available at a variety of amperage levels to repair the charger if/when that happens. I like the added touch of the fuse in the power plug. Good safety feature.

I had an old Bosch charger with Selenium rectifier give its magic smoke. It’s pretty nasty. But one of the problems I faced was the that these high current selenium rectifiers are hard to find and quite expensive. Silicon rectifiers are easy to find and cheap. But their forward voltage drop is low when compared to higher voltage drop of selenium. Because of this these older transformers output 14VAC for 12V setting and 9VAC for the 6V setting. If you replaced with just a silicone bridge rectifier the output DC will be quite high.

WOW that is an old charger for sure. A bridge selenium rectifier setup, can't get much older then that. And you also can't get any better then powder coating either. And that is a huge current transformer as well. Looks like you could also adjust the voltage output via that wire-wound power resister if need be. Nice project Martin. Thumbs Up!

Masterful work, maybe you should get to know a props chap for the telly as they love to get their hands on really good period pieces like with Life on Mars there was a massive call out for 70's stuff and sometimes they just hire the bits for show so you prob could start a props business of your own :D

That is a wonderful restoration, the powder coating, decal reproduction, etc. You must have done it over several evenings. I have a 1960's 6 and 12 volt battery charger, its in good condition, I think it was hardly used and stayed in the box till I bought it. The clips are exactly similar to yours, with a black neg and red pos color inside a rectangle. Wonder if its the same make.

They used a transformer to convert the voltage so they almost work for so many years. Nowadays, companies use junk SMPS power supply instead which work for a couple of days.

something you can try to mitigate that "pixilated" appearance when your printing out decals, try printing in "photo-mode" if your printer has that option. tends to give it a higher level of detail. ive seen Marty from marty's matchbox makeovers revert to that for waterslides for small fine-print decals on his cars. still a really neat resto on this. your videos have really been tempting me to look into getting a powder coating setup.
