back in the day, advertising could get away with slipping in little white lies here and there to over exaggerate the product's true quality. For example, if you ever saw the old 50s Pepsodent (sp?) toothpaste commercial, the jingle mentions a n ingredient called "irium". which according to the company was one of the toothpaste's magical ingredients that worked woners on your teeth. The problem is, "irium" doesn't exist at all and was in fact just a made up chemical/ingredient to make it more appealing and help sell the product. It mentions it on its Wikipedia page if you want to see for yourself that it was fake. The company later admitted it. However, you'll notice in some of these older commercials, most times the companies will mention some super ingredient but at the same time not explaining what the heck it really is or what it does. So in a consumer's POV ... "Wow, I don't know what the hell "irium" is, but by the sounds of it, I apparently need it for my teeth so I'm gonna switch toothpastes for no other reason other than a commercial told me so. " Ignorance at its finest.

+rasterat r I remember old ads for VO5 hairspray that claimed to have a miracle ingredient first called "mirrol," and later called "veron," that was supposed to improve the "hold." I doubt that either mirrol or veron ever actually existed. And I read that the drop of "retsyn" in every Certs breath mint was actually salad oil.
