The little lugs on the rifles come off all of the time ( these seem to be Geyper man rifles ). Palitoys were much stronger. This idea with the Lego ariels is SUPERB. You will get a lot of collectors out of trouble with this upload. BRILLIANT IDEAS ONCE MORE.

Great fixes! I was always annoyed at how fragile the sling swivel points were on a lot of Action Man guns. When I had Action Man figures in the 1960's/70's, there were no specialist LEGO parts, so my mum and dad repaired the sling swivels with tiny screw in eyelets made for use in dolls' houses.

alternatively you could put a piece of heat shrink tubing over the end to make the muzzle device. great job as always.

Thanks - really interesting! I always considered this version of SLR to be unrepairable, but now I know. FYI, there were 3 versions of this rifle, with the 1970-72 first edition easily being the most displayable and highest quality, with an elastic adjustable sling and shiny brass fixings, a really great design and set off the ceremonial outfits perfectly. In 1973, at the start of the gripping hands era, they cut production costs and re-issued it as all plastic with those daft tiny brittle fixing lugs and rubber sling - the ones you worked on, but this was one of their worst design changes in my opinion and like I think we all found back then, broke almost immediately. Given most of us had at least one Soldier in our ranks and the SLR was supplied in various outfits and Equipment Centre cards, I think most kids experienced this issue. So I suspect this is easily the hardest version now to obtain now. After much complaining by disgruntled parents and kids alike, in 1976 they re-issued it again using permanent think sturdy lugs and they remained until the end of production and easily the most durable, though less accurate looking, but hey it was only a toy at the end of the day! I never knew Lego parts could be SO useful! ;-) Thanks again, great vid!

I have just finished repairing my last Two VAM SLRs and this page was recommended to me. I fixed my SLR in a slightly different way using old Cotton Ear Bud shafts. The old ones are plastic and not paper. I then used heat shrink to make the flash hider. A different way of doing things with a similar end result. Regardless your other videos will be helpful and i intend to look through them when i have a little more time.

Wow Dave, you know that feeling you get when you see something from the past and it takes you right back to that moment?! Well I just got that when you showed that gun. I had so much of this stuff as a kid and remember one of my favourite weapons was a machine gun that had a slot to thread the rubber bandolier through. I am not well versed in the terminology but I think you know what I mean. The gun was silver and was straight out of the Commando film near the end. Anyway I really enjoyed the video. Ah! The old M60 Heavy Machine Gun? Silver with gold folding bipod stand, that came with a silver plastic ammo belt (1st edition Support Weapons set and later pocket money cards), or black rubber ammo belts, in the various versions of the Commando outfit. It also came with the later SAS Copter and Assault Copter sets. Really detailed item, but again the lugs that the bipod legs attached to, always broke off easily, rather defeating the object really. If they used a more flexible plastic, like on the ammo belt, they would have been fine. Perhaps ToyPolloy could do a restoration of the M60 sometime? ;-)

Nigel Wood you know your stuff! I never had a bi-pod as most of my action men were hand me downs but it definitely had the black rubber ammo. I had tanks and the bike and sidecar that Toy Polloi has shown previously. Oh to have them now!!

I always use small screws to replace the broken tabs, and the reason those tabs break easily is because the plastic the strap is made of doesn't agree with the plastic the Gun is made of and there is a chemical reaction causing the tab to melt! i do plan to do a fix it video of my own to show another way to go about fixing Action Man Guns + other accessories so i hope you'll tune in for that 1 Dave.

I prefer to keep it all plastic if I can. Screws just don't feel right. These should be stronger than the original pegs as the lego plastic is very forgiving and bends quite well. Cheers

I'm the opposite, if it was just a generic piece of plastic then i'm fine, because its Lego it doesn't feel right to me to mix 2 toy lines together. A screw is just generic so it Doesn't bother me. Theres no wrong or right way, as long as the result is good. There can be more than 1 solution to a problem, whatever you're happy with! :)

Yeah, I've seen several that look like they've never had a sling monted and the tab is far larger than the others that look like the tab as worn away or dissolved slightly.

Old bike innertube would be good for making replacement straps I think.

You could source your Lego bits from Bricklink. It may be quite a bit cheaper than eBay and you can find just about any Lego part ever made.

I know you don't really work with modern toys. However, I'm having trouble with coming up with a way to create a Anakin Skywalker glove for the 12 inch Hasbro figure. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? And, the hot toys hand is a bit out of my price range as well as I believe it's too small for the Hasbro body.

Any black block, the classic lego piece. Just cut a piece from the flat surface of that.

@@toypolloi thanks! Have you done any AM scorpion tank restorations? I just got one and have to rebuild the 7.26mm gun and two of the smoke canisters. Also, is there supposed to be a clip holding the drivers hatch on? Mine has the pin on the hatch but it pops out, so I thought there might be a retaining clip of some sort.

I haven't. I don't have space for storing the AM vehicles, so I don't work on them that often. They are normally pretty easy to fix up.

You mean Straps? Make new ones using narrow ribbon or something? You can get 3-4mm wide ribbon really cheap.

@@theant9821 I mean straps. Using ordinary wide ribbon is very simple. The action man original strap has a buckle that is very difficult to provide. Dave always finds some repro staff that fits perfectly. Cheers!

You can use what you have to hand. I like this as you can get an exact size match. And most people will have tape to hand.

They do. I've used them many times in my star wars videos as they are a perfect fit for most Star wars bits.

I like to fix stuff so had it been made that way it never would have broken in play anyway. And if possible improve realism and accuracy to the real thing. I'm trying to think of a way to make the strap attach like the ones without tabs that have a wire on the strap go through a little hole in the rifle. Using paperclip and a thin strip of white leather I've made a good ceremonial strap for a grenadier, but its the only rifle i have with that type of sling mount. Making slings is easy, mounting them in a strong and functional way isn't so easy. I'm not too fussed about originality, i like to improve what's there especially when fixing stuff, i want it to be better than new, more realistic, stronger. If it can't survive play it's not fit for purpose, them and the rubber slings are just a poor cheap unrealistic way of doing it and wouldn't consider using anything as a sling that wasn't fabric or leather. For barrels i use wire, its just as good and far more durable and can be bent back into shape if it was damaged in play.
